Edited by: Forum Poster on 28/12/2007 23:39:37 Should I get Windows Vista?
I have 37GB hardrive space with just over a quarter of that left, and I have 768MB of RAM with a intel pentium 1500mhz processor.

Vista is fairly resource hungry. I think you could run it on that computer, but you wouldn't get good performance on other resource hungry programs unless that 1500MHz CPU is dual core. To run Vista, I'd recommend at least a gig of RAM, maybe two gigs, and a dual core CPU (one core to run the OS and background processes, the other to run programs).
However, I would definitely wait until MS release the first service pack. There a fair few bugs in Vista right now which need to be ironed out by a service pack. --------------------------------------------------------------------

I would not recommend vista even to my worst enemy. Especially not if you have less than 2gb ram.

No. Vista Isnt for you.
Also, with SP1 on the horizon for Vista, well.. Im looking forward to that alot.
Also, XP isnt an upgrade. XP is much more unreliable in theory. And in my experience, it is. My Vista machine is rock solid, i cant say that about XP on the very same machine.
Again, the problems you experience with most operative systems are PURELY due to third party drivers, not Windows. Yes, theres issue with Windows, but so there is for mac(Suprise mac fanbois, mac's are worse).
As for linux, im not gonna go there. Its not ready for the mainstream, so im not gonna compare vista to that.

I used to play EVE on a 500mhz Celeron with only 128mb of RAM, GF4 MX440 gpu, 56k and windows 98. It wasn't nice...
(win98se is/was my favourite OS though, I would prob. still use it if it was still compatible)

Actually I think its better to have XP for gaming and for everything else, move on to a fast and fun operating system like Linux Mint. These days, its very easy to install and use, and you have applications for it that are at least OK compared to windows apps (linuxdcpp, firefox, thunderbird/evolution etc), even though they are not up to standards for some things yet.

Vista runs great on my PC... a little bit of a pain in the ass to set up, but with 4GB of RAM it runs fast, smooth, and stable. Also it's funny, most of teh people talking **** about vista haven't even tried it. I used to be one of them

I have XP on my desktop and Vista on my laptop. Whilst I have no real issues with Vista, I do prefer XP. __________________________________

I use Vista 64 (Business edition and Ultimate edition) I would definitely recommend upgrading *after* you upgrade your hardware. unfortunately that machine is a little slow for Vista and RAM not nearly enough. I have a Q6600 with 1Gb of RAM (my 4Gb was DOA) and it struggles... Other than that, Vista is stable, performs excellently, looks and feels better than XP and if something does !$*@ up Microsoft have learned from XP and given you about 20 different ways to restore/repair/reinstate. Including being able to do System Restore from the boot cd (just in case you can't do safe mode)
There are three kinds of people who knock vista 1) Those who don't have good enough hardware 2) Those who haven't used it 3) OS fanbois
(For your information I also have a Mac for my 3D Art developement and a Linux box for my web/sql server.)

the hard facts:
WinXP is an all purpose tool box that, should you know how to utilize the tools within, will accomplish any task with all due expediency
WinVista is reinventing the wheel into a rube goldberg machine
it all comes down to whether you want practicality or gadgets and gizmos that do nothing

Hardware to run vista smoothly... check. Tried Vista... Check OS Fanboi... Windows no check, linux check, mac I will give it a -
I have installed vista and tried it. I personally hate it. I would prefer winxp to vista, but linux over xp. XP is as stable as a windows platform can be expected to be as long as you know how to use a computer. Win Vista is a clunky brick of a thing that is resource intensive, and sold out to the mega media corporations.
I personally prefer smaller faster nimbler adaptable OS's and programs and business models. Windows does not do any of these very well, and the more versions they go through the clunkier it gets.
I personally am waiting for the Windows successor that they have been working on since before vista. It is supposed to be a complete rewrite of windows and is supposed to do away with DOS.
It's a Slanket, a blanket that has sleeves.
