It really depends on what you are planning to do.
Dreads and carriers serve different purposes, so it really depends.

After long and careful thinking, I trained for the Archon (Amarr carrier) because I like its high cap and great, sustainable tank the best. Also, its remote boosting capabilities (remote armor repairs and cap transfers) were most appealing to me. And as an added bonus, it looks awesome.
Now that I'm fully done training for the Archon, I will soon start training for a Moros (Gallente dread). I won't be training for a Revelation (Amarr dread) because I don't feel like training large energy turrets to 5 (or any energy turrets for that matter) and I don't like the way the Revelation looks, at all. I also like the drone damage bonus on the Moros, and Gallente Battleship V will come in handy, and I already have large hybrid turrets trained to 5, so there you have it. --- High quality pics of most EVE ships! |

I actually started off my capital training, with a phoenix. I liked the size, the damage, and the overall epeen value (true sadly..) However i changed to a Chimera for the sake of its uses. A carrier STILL has its uses, for logistics etc. When i last moved home, i put all my ships (20+ of them) in my carrier, and flew off to my new home in one jump. Everything i own. Then on the battlefield, i add not only DPS to my gang, but also rep them, thus removing the hostile gangs dps. Then when it comes time to rep up POS, im the best man for the job.
A dread sadly is only good at one thing, and thats just slapping dps on large targets (Capitals, Stations, and POS). Not only that, but with Siege on, you're dead in the water for 10 mins. Need serious trust in your FC to do that.

carriers are more versatile than dreads but dreads have there place id say train for a carrier then train for a dread of the same race just dont buy said dread till needed
each race had pros and cons it all depends on where your current skills are and your location for ice to jump ect.

Location for ice is meaningless tbh. All it takes is a hauler alt. And thats on the off chance, that you dont have some nearby. All hubs sell all types, and easy to get.

Definately go for a carrier first.
The Nidhoggur is better now than it's been, but it's still probably considered the 'worst' of the carriers because it has the weakest tank. Your fleet will love you for the repping bonus.
The Archon has the strongest tank and is probably the best carrying carrier. It and the thanatos are considered the two best carriers.
The Chimera has a pretty tough tank as well (not sustained), but being a shield tanker... that old debate. It is probably the best to pick if you are into shield tanking.
The Thanatos outdamages all of the other carriers, but is the ugliest.
I chose the Thanatos because the Moros is easily the best dread to use with good drone skills (which you'll have to be flying a carrier) and i'm concerned with damage output. I can put a better tank by spending more on mods, but there is nothing I could do to improve my damage.
