Me and friends have had lan parties / get together's for years, usually 5 or 6 of us drag our PC's round someone's house for the day/night.
but we're running out of games. For games to be good for a LAN match they have to work first time with no funky network settings etc, require no CD keys or have readily available *****s (since no one is going to pay for 6 copies of a game or 1 copy each that will only get played a few times a year)
So far we've been playing Company of heroes / Dawn of War and Joint Operations as well as some old school classics like Age of Empires 2 and counterstrike. But need more suggestions

I used to go to LANs quite a lot a few years ago - mainly playing games like BF2, HL2:Deathmatch, Doom II, Ghost Recon, Operation:Flashpoint and The Specialist (a very good mod for HL1). Occasionally played Starcraft but only a few people I went with liked RTS games so that was a rarity.
still, people got bored of those eventually and games (and each other) in general, so I don't really do that anymore

I go to 2 regularly every year at my mate's house, we used to play quite a big mixture of FPS and RTS, but now it's mainly FPS. Here are a few good suggestions, they're pretty simple to set up, and won't whine about CD-Keys, authentication within LAN, etc...
- FEAR Combat (it's free, www.joinfear.com) - Call of Duty (My favourites are 4 and UO since COD2 failed so much compared to UO... no health, no rank, no sprint) - Unreal Tournament 2004 (loads of different modes. The Air Buccaneers mod is amazing, especially when everyone's sleep deprived) - Age of Empires 3 (if your computers can handle it, if not - II) - The Valve games are always good. - Homeworld 2 (mix up the RTS front with this... EVE fans should love it ) - DEFCON (Global Thermonuclear War. Need I say more? Only 6 players, but games are relatively quick, runs on slower machines, 60MB install, and it's always fun backstabbing your friends and wiping out their major populations.)
Doesn't have to be too fancy to be played at LAN, my favourites are COD, FEAR, AOE and DEFCON for an easy mix. They're not too harsh on the system specs either, and don't have funny network authentication things.

Ghost Recon and the Rainbow Six games always tend to be a fairly good bet, nothing better than co-op against NPCs.
Wanna go really oldschool, get AVP or AVP2..... nothing better than sneaking up behind a mate marines as aliens and stuff, watching them panic in real life before making them scream. Awesome.

Yeah, I wish we do a few more co-op games, although the RTS are quite good against bots. Even though on higher difficulties they totally cheat... FEAR Combat has a co-op mod (get to ze chopper!) which is quite fun.

We had AVP on once, not again... nearly everyone played aliens, there were screams every ten seconds as this rather vile thing pops up on everyone's screens... not a good way to spend a match, endlessly getting face****ed...

keep playing coh because it owns :)
try and get TF2 for sure, HL2 deathmatch in killbox with low gravity and superspeed etc can be fun for awhile.. for steam games have one person buy it and send the GCF over lan, log on to the account with the game and go into offline mode and repeat.

This may have already been mentioned, as I didn't read all of the replies, but try these for lan parties, good times have been had at lan parties I've been at! : Starcraft, Unreal tournament 2004 (if you have alot of people, or Unreal Tournament 3 if all of you have good computers) Supreme Commander, Diablo 1 or 2 if there's just a few of you to do co-op, Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2 (see Diablo reasoning) Command and Conquer series.
I've played all of these at lan parties, and we always have good times. ---------------------------------------------

If you like RTSes, and don't want to spend any money, you might want to try TA Spring.
It's an Open Source game based off of Total Annihilation and is a ton of fun to play once you get the hang of it. You can play LAN or Internet games, and there is even a Single Player mod so you can practice against an AI.
There are also dozens upon dozens of maps, mods, and upgraded AI's that you can install and use. It's a fun game, you should check it out.

(you can even copy the actual installation directory to another pc and it works that way.. forget installing!) Supreme Commander - if you have several hours to burn, this is the game to play Call of duty - united offensive expansion - the original with tanks, doesnt get any better battlefield 1942 - modern combat mod - god i love thousands and thousands of bots to shoot Empire Earth 2 - good strategy game, love it (better than the dumbed down 3rd, which is such a dissapointment ) Sid Meiers Civ (whichever is the latest one) - very long game, we're talking a whole weekend here.... Age of mythology - classic, no screwing around type of game, easy to get going
btw you can find no-cd patches everywhere, and keygens, but i dont think im allowed to say that :P

No-CD Patches are fine, since you (ostensibly) have to legally own the original install media for them to work. IE: You have to have the software installed already for the no-CD patch to do anything, and the assumption is that since you have the software already installed, you must have legally purchased it.
I have found that gamecopyworld.com is an excellent place to get no-cd patches for all the games I have legally purchased.
Cracks and Keygens, however, are not fine, since they allow you to bypass the "buying it" step. Obviously we don't want to assist people in breaking the law, so we won't assist anyone in that regard.

Dawn of War is a great LAN game. Good multiplayer strategy, strong team modes, and fairly quick rounds so you don't get bored. Plus enough race choices so everyone isn't using identical stuff (unless you're all noobs and everyone plays Space Marines and Chaos).
DEFCON is king though. One thing I've always wanted to do with DEFCON is do one of the full, real time "office" matches that last like 6 hours. It'd be so awesome to go for lunch, come back and find missiles mid-flight across the Atlantic, and desperately scramble the retaliation subs at your attacker's nearest ally. Or to forge diplomatic deals, in real time, in messages across a 3 hour period. Good way to waste a day ------

Ever play the Star Control franchise? Stellar Frontier is Star Control with EVE flavored customization. Totally free, it used to be more "MMO", but since the stats server has gone offline, it really only does singleplayer or LAN now.
Top-down internet spaceships in 2D, realtime fighting, with the object being to out-colonize your opponent in a solar-system. Your wallet and SP are persistent, so you can earn a better ship, but you have to buy and outfit it, and when you lose it you have to buy and outfit it again.
Very low system requirements for either client or server. Pretty easy for anyone to understand the gameplay. ----- TANSTAAFL

Edited by: Sulora on 04/01/2008 06:16:42 I can't believe no one besides myself has mentioned Starcraft yet This thread needs more Korean people in it! (I'm not Korean) I mean seriously, if a countries (South Korea) economy is mostly composed of Starcraft sales and other Blizzard related merchandise sales... the game can't be that bad... (I have no idea if there is any truth to that statement, probably isn't )

Apart from the whole taking 6 hours to finish on normal speed thing. And speed mode isn't all that great, really looses the tension.
Worms Armageddon is quite possibly the most fun game to play on LAN, ever. 族---族
