I just had to move some ships in high sec around and found out (to less than my pleasure) that most of the ships were rigged and thus only option of moving them is to fly each one. Moving 10-15 ships is kinda PITA.
So the idea is that we need a carrier equivalent for high sec. Doesn't need the jumpdrive, nor the fighters. Hell make it just a freighter that can move only assembled ships (you can even nerf it as a carrier). It would be great to have an option of moving ships for deploying in operations area even in highsec (I had an idea of corp op where we would go far somewhere and do some fun stuff but it kinda fails on PITA logistics).
Anyone think this idea has some merit or am I just a whining carebear?

You're just a whining carebear...
although I'll say this now, a LOT of people would benefit from this, especially those traders that specialise in Rigged Ships...

I know :(
I would like it for combat actually. You go somewhere to fight and you can bring with you combat ready ships. It's kinda stupid to buy new ships and riggs every time or remove the riggs so that you can use freighters.
Also removing any combat abilities and jump drive would hardly make it overpowered or something that would impact 0.0 in any major way. (it would be to the carrier wath orca will be (I hope) to Rorqual)

Use the freighter just that the annoying "must repackage everything" requirement away. If the industrail ships can haul assembled ships then why cant the freighter?

Since when? Even though I've got a few Indys that have the volume, I can't haul any assembled ships. _______________________________

Absolutely /signed.
At this point, it's simply an oversight that should get addressed. How about a tier 2 freighter that has a two-battleship-and-change maintenance bay like a carrier?
Something. Anything. There's not even a real economic argument (ie, the cost of transporting goods kind of deal) that can be made against doing something like this.

Tier 2 Freighter :) That's an excellent idea. Would also make it available fast (no need for invention) and price would hopefully be acceptable. 2 fregihters and you can move a small fleet to have for your personal need in the op area. I wouldn't even mind if it is as slow as normal freighter (even if I wouldn't complain a bit faster transport of ships).

I concur. A tier two freighter than only carries assembled ships would be great.

just let freighters be able to transport assembled ships, no big deal or advantage...

If the volume values I'm looking at are correct, you still couldn't move battleships very well though. Well, an Obelisk can move 2x Domi only at skill lvl 5, but not Domi + Raven/Rokh. Mega/Hyp are even bigger, and so are the Amarr BS.
+Gallente Freighter from 4 to 5 would be 40 days for me .
For Cruisers and a couple of BC's +smaller stuff it could be good though.
