i have not done much pvp, mostly just when i get unlucky in low sec mission, and would like to get my feet wet. i really like the concept of ecm. i know the hole practice on a bb then go to a scrop. to me watching someone **** their pants becuase they cant do anything to stop their soon to be death, would seem alot more fun than an all out dps boat. but with all the nerfs, is it even worth it anyomre. or should i just go for all out dps.
i dont have the skills for ecm yet a wondering it i am wasting my time with training them but if ecm is still worth it i would be happy to.
question 2: is ecm in mission stupid? i was mainly thinking for practice to get a sense of how the ship works, to minimize cost. |

In missions, ECM will not work. You can break the rats' locks, but they have instant relock time. As far as I know they also ignore the 20 second timer.
As for PvP, I just posted this earlier the day.

ECM is PvP.
Missions and ratting it just isn't effective and you will die much easier than just using an active tank. Missions and ratting are easy to setup for because they are known circumstances.
Now ECM in PvP is VERY effective in the right hands. The Rook(Caldari Recon) can jam ships with just one module and as mentioned can really turn the tide in all size gangs.
The life of a ECM PvPer is the life of being called primary almost every single time. So if you do choose it, be ready to die often. At least you can control your own destiny though.

Train tracking disturptors or target painting or even damps. Please.
Ah, crap, people beat me to it with constructive advice. I really hate facing ECM ships w/out counter-ECM ships, they're the total win for gang combat. Sig removed, inappropriate link. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

If you are just interested in getting the experience and practice how to use and maintain the ECM modules, then sure use them in missions. But dont expect them to make the missions easier - sometimes they actually make it more difficult because you lose valuable tank/gank slots. Also, dont expect the NPC rats to behave the same way as players do when it comes to ECM. NPC ships play by their own set of rules.
Now in terms of PVP, have you run missions against Gurista pirates where some ships can chain-ECM you for 3-5 cycles? Again, NPC ships play by their own rules but it gives you an idea of how it feels to be on the receiving side of ECM attacks, except that players will be much smarter than the scripted NPCs.

ECM on a specialised boat can be deadly but because you sacrifice tanking slots (on Caldari ships anyway) when it fails you go boom very, very quickly! It can turn the tide of a battle, even if it only works once.
Blackbirds are very cheap, you can get most of the modules you need for a cheap setup from missions. So if you want to practice how to use them and all that, that is the way to go.

For an example, my buddy and I were hunting in lowsec. Me in a falcon, him in a brutix. He warped onto a heavily tanked ferox that turned out to be a trap. Mega, Mega, and a stabber came in. Ferox and stabber scrammed him. I uncloaked, jammed all of them and both of us were able to disengage.
Sometimes ECM is like a "I don't want to deal with your crap" button. It's awesome.

Depends on the size of the engagement. A specialized ship will be 100km+ away usually and any ships that are fast enough to close that distance in a reasonable time (ceptors, nanohacs) tend to have ****-poor sensor strength anyway and are easily perma-jammed.

A good ECM pilot in a ship with ECM bonuses can and will swing fight for his gang.
Falcons are awesome small gang support, long range ECM whorage for removing dps/removing tackles/removing enemy ewar/breaking remote rep chains/etc..
Train up some probing skills to go along with your ECM skills and you can scout and bust safespots for the gang too.
TL;DR I love good falcon pilots
