Edited by: Cpt Advile on 20/01/2008 22:28:40 Sooo it's 00:19 here in Estonia and my main char is stuck in Jita... As I had nothing to do I started browsing google for EVE, as I can't live with out it (it seems).
Then I found this:
BS concept
This is a Asgeir Jon Asgeirsson's work of an Minmatar battleship (Maelstrom, If I'm not mistaking [I fly Amarr myself :p]). I found it to be spectacular!, I only wish it would look like that in the game, but that would surely kill there poly limit for a model in the game, so as an 3D artist myself I wanted to construct a 3D model based on that concept that wouldn't be limited by polygons nor texture memory etc...
So here's my "Minmatar BShip Project": I will try to model it, as detailedly as I can and I will post my progress here, for ppl to see/judge it.
enjoy:

The first time I saw that pic it reminded me of the really old style of Klingon ships in StarTrek. His work is awesome though.

Out of interest wouldn't it be easier to export the actual CCP model and then add the detail rather than start from scratch.
The proportions will be bang on for a start.

I only tried 3d modelling a bit before I got distracted, but from what I can see it can be a huge pain to take a very basic model and add detail to it. It's probably easier to do it from scratch so that the model is clean and easy to work with as the details aren't just stuck on top.

Edited by: Cpt Advile on 21/01/2008 15:39:01 Yap... starting from start is better, as imported models can be bugged etc... I only hope the proportions will go right (or I will make em right) when the ship starts to form.

dude that looks awsome, I've long considered adding minmatar ships to my skills list, the maelstrom is one of those ones that make me lean in that direction. ... Why do I PvP? Because I love the feeling I get when I see the pretty lights and know that someone somewhere is screaming incoherently at their computer screen. |

What you have started looks impressive so far but if i might constructive suggestion.
There is no sense of scale yet evident in the wing. No sense of how it would have been constructed or maintained (this is also evident within the original concept, but hints are there in other areas.)
Some things you may wish to consider.
- Transparency (or alpha maps) to the main solar panels showing the supporting structure underneath.
- The main support strut. Is it a series of modules stacked together, or is it a steel matrix with a armor plate skin? this may go towards how you wish to texture that area to give it scale and show how it was assembled. The upper panels above the main hull show large sections that can be removed to access the inner areas of the panels. are their any access points to the lower struts.
- If something needs repair at the base how does the crew get there? is there an internal lift or perhaps running its length should be hydraulic runs?
- your running lights are huge and "simplistic", If your going for detail glowing domes for lights is not the best approach.
Final point. The CCP models love to show glowing windows everywhere on there ship. The problem is window placement and scaling is arbitrary and i think distorts the true sense of scale on a ship (especially comparing a frigate side by side to a battleship) When you get to that point i would suggest stepping back from CCP and thinking on how your ship is inhabited.

Looks like a great start.
Some 3D modeling advice learned through great suffering:
Adding detail to a low-poly real-time model is more troublesome than simply starting fresh. However, it is a great help to place the original game model into a background layer so that you may use it as a guide.
And, never ever texture anything until the model is complete. It sucks... I know... but time and time again this has come back to bite me in the ass when something has to be changed later on.
Good luck with your project!

Todays progress: Uper wing progress and new structures
I know the thing on the upper wing (the thing where the red light comes out) is out of proportion, I will work on that in the future.
I also added frames where the solar panels are built on. (not on the concept)
C U tomorrow :p

Tonights progress: main hull
Today I spent most of my time on re-scaling and because I couldn't successfully rescale the ship, so it would look normal like on the concept, I had to force the upper wing few inches back. That made the whole ship look better.
Some of you, who still have there eye sight more or less ok (from all the playing), may see some strange "welding shadows" on the second armor plate. I can assure you, that is perfectly normal, don't ask about it.
More coming tomorrow
