I read this link here.. and thought hey we're halfway there already... Surely Eve could fulfill NASA's needs? Seriously, think what it could do for Eve if they could be convinced that this game could be expanded in the name of real scientific research!
Imagine having your ingame Char view surfaces of planetsa in our Solar system, or control experiments in real NASA craft.. Just some of the things they are asking for from a MMORPG Developer.
EVE has already developed lots of the graphical stuff and this would be a permanent free advertisement.. :) There would be no need to change the game mechanic, just a way to log into the serious NASA stuff (Maybe from a station or POS? - Or even a complex? Ports you through to the NASA server..
Come on CCP... Get into space for real!! :)
and Fly safe! :)
Interesting stuff. :)

only thing is EVE is based a few million years in the future... however if CCP were to team up with NASA for say a side game, maby they wud then be able to employ more people and get things sorted faster... such as petitions, lag, maby even get rid of downtime.... al these things are just a limit on the money ccp has... team up with somthing like NASA and they shouldnt have a problem lol

I dont think that would be a problem, measuring the strength of UV light or simple experimentation like growing a plant etc isnt going to be any different no matter what the timescale and I also think that NASA would have a seperate process in the game that registered users could enter NOT every tom richard or harry! :)
Although I see no reason why players cant view that stuff going on that we never usually see.
Telemetry and live camera action etc.

EVE disqualifies, however, because it does not possess an accurate physics engine, something which is very important to the NASA guys according to the article.
Mind, I don't think they're looking for existing games... they're looking for knowledge on how to run, manage and develop a MMO. It's a field they know nothing of - so they are trying to find someone competent they can ask.

I agree. This is something that could be all taken in CCP's stride they have handled this kind of stuff for many years and got better and better at it, and theres no reason a port to a N.A.S.A server couldnt load a game physics change.
It's not really a problem. I really believe EVE has the necesary "Eye Candy" to accurately reproduce anything N.A.S.A. requires for online simulation of experiments..

No.. CCP has the right like any other company to charge it's client (N.A.S.A.)for a decent profit.
Thats the sum they could plough back into improvements and development for EVE-Online.

Originally by: NASA RFI The RFI submitter is expected to address: 1. How a NASA-based educational MMO should be designed. 2. How a NASA-based educational MMO should support both formal and informal education efforts. 3. How a NASA-based educational MMO should connect to current and future NASA missions. 4. How NASA career opportunities exploration and significant STEM learning experiences would be incorporated into the design a NASA-based educational MMO. 5. How a NASA-based educational MMO game play would be engaging for all participants.
At no point they ask for a finished product or actual help with the code. They just want expertise on how to design an MMO.
CCP could certainly provide a decent answer to all 5 questions though. But so could blizzard.
As for EVE, I saw an ice planet closer to its parent star than earth and that star was hotter than our sun so astronomical data is incorrect in EVE.
The physics engine would have to be completely thrown out and redone from scratch.
The graphics engine would probably be better handled by a raytrace engine to accurately depict the results of experiments than by any current engine. Given the development time of an MMO and the fact that a quadcore can handle realtime raytracing quite well, it's not a stretch to take that leap.
