Hey there folks o/
It's come to my attention that CCP are expanding their payment options and i think this is a great idea. I'm just posting to say that i think a good idea would be to use SMS.
It would work like any text would. You text a certain word to a certain number and CCP charge you the amount of the ETC from your credit (For example. 30d ETC at ú8. You top up your phone with ú10 and they credit it from that money)
Any comments/ideas/suggestions on this topic?
Hope this goes through! Would be a great payment option for me personally, don't know about everyone else.

I don't think it's a bad idea, the question is really if it can be done. I'll send it up the foodchain anyway.

It can definetely be done. The only problems would be linking the account with the phone number (which can be done here on eve-secure whenever you request a payment type change, not THAT much extra code), and setting up deals with the local mobile operators (at least for a majority of European countries, not that horrible... but there is always the issue of the surcharge/cut for the mobile operator)... and last but not least, time until confirmation of payment (which might again be pretty fast, actually, depending on mobile operator).

Or using paybycall like rapidshare does. I think it's really great but theres prolly a lot of overhead costs attached to it.

Well, there are a lot of mobile operators in each country, and even if you have the same operator in various countries you'd probably have to make a deal with each one per country. Then you'd have to create the whole system to handle it etc, so of course it can be done, the question is if it's worth the time and effort.

It shouldn't require any special deals to be brokered with operators, or anything like that. There are literally countless pay-by-text and pay-by-phone systems in the UK. As far as I understand it, its simply a special type of number whereby the call-receiver receives a portion of the amount paid by the caller.
See the godly Wikipedia for more info. Also here. ------

well i know that denmark have a few companies, that specializes in accepting phone payment from most companies.
So it's easily doable, by just making a contract with that company.
and it would be sooooo cool..... i would use it all the time...

Wrang there are many international companies that are currently setup to provide this sort of facility to other businesses particularly in the online area, 30 seconds of google research :P ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Well.. A way to access and log in would be.
You enter a WAP address on your mobile phone for the CCP website. and use your username and password to log in. You then go to the size of the ETC you would like. (30d, 90d, 100d etc) and select it. You then get a certain code which relates to your account. so for example:
30d - 30joeblogs33333
the first 2 numbers being size of ETC. the word being your account username last 5 numbers being a specific ID code.
You then use that code to text to the CCP number. CCP sends you a text back with what website to visit (on/off computer) and add the ETC to your account. And also includes the code for the ETC. CCP credits the amount of money equal to the ETC (all equal prices in every country ofc) from your Credit or from your Monthly contract.
Thanks for all the replies so far

Edited by: Haldeeman on 24/01/2008 09:36:12 I work for a telco and had this idea months ago.
The service you refer to is short code SMS, or probably more suitable would be a 'long code' international number. And having thought about it (i wanted to retail GTC and other services to make real money)I can tell you that the cost of renting the short/long code would hike the cost of the GTC substantially. There is a number of ways you could do this, either by two way messaging or reverse billing.
1)You pay both a rental on the number and are charged for sending the resulting sms back to the original texter. You share a revenue with the telco that owns the number.
i.e. YOU text CCP for a code, CCP texts back the time code. you are charged ú15 for the code, CCP is charged ú1.50 to send the text, CCP recieves a billing report at the end of the month and invoices the telco for ú13.50 LESS the revenue which the telco will take off the final ammount for that text. CCP then has to pay a rental on the number. yes, its in arrears, which creates further issues for accounting.
Account verification, stolen mobiles and other issues would cause issues and be a further strain to administration. Short Code SMS is heavily monitored in some countries by overseeing authorities and are ham handed when it comes to making sure that things are ran smooth. You could find yourself short changed if you were to invest, slip up somewhere and have the number pulled.
Further more, even with the international number you will pay international text rates @ the amount set by your telco. Hence i believe that CCP would have to calculate the cost of texting from each international mobile operator to each operator. Counting the number of providers and finding out what agreements that they have with each other in terms of text termination charges would be a rediculous amount of leg work for such small profit.

The problem with this is that a lot of telecom companies take a very large chunk of the cash, often up to 40-50%, plus the fee to the SMS Gateway you're running the service from. As such, you'd be likely to have to pay Ç25 at least for CCP to actually be left with Ç15, making the idea convenient, but undesirable. ---

Hmm ok, fair enuf. I could see why CCP wouldn't want this. Maybe they can cut a deal with the providers? I don't know, i'm not a big businessman! unfortunately.. lol.
I dont know about "such a small profit"... I think many people would use the SMS texting. Maybe if they put it on a sort of "trial version" for a month or 2, see how it ran, if not just cancel it?
