I reeeallly wish we could customize the look of our ships, I want to be able to adjust color, buy some fancy spoilers or other modifications that can make my ship standout from every other.

I would rather not see
3000 black ships ok. In SWG we had the ability to get custom colored armor and it was always black black black tailors were always asked to make full black outfits. Every one loves black.
Black black black black black.
and the occasional pink just because it was so horrid looking.
A big no on custom paintjobs

I'd rather see the devs work on something more meaningful, honestly.
I agree it would be nice, but 95% of the time all we see is X and [ ] in space anyway. Except for our own ship of course, but hardly anyone else would see it (which is the point of customization to a large degree). ________________

Like ambulation?
Appearance customization would be a great feature, and something that should be looked at in the future, but really, it takes months for minor bugs to be acknowledged, much less corrected. I do not see it as a feature ever being implemented. |

Think you can introduce that without introducing more loading lag/desynch when warping to a gatecamp?

This. As for now the only graphical content that needs to be sent over from client to client is portraits. Actually, even those are probably generated locally, with parameters of the model sent over.
Customization of ship's design will result in need to send over the texture information for any forsaken ship there is in this 200-pilot blob, and I am not even starting about Jita undock :)
OFC it can be implemented with "switch off" setting available, but why do it altogether? I dont see any point in that.

Portraits are not generated locally, but they are tiny and one need not download them.
As far as customization is concerned, some thoughts...if, rather than individual customization, a number of player/dev created presets could be selected for corp/alliance, and then downloaded with patches, no new graphical information need be transmitted during play. It would already be on your computer, and hence ought to generate no additional lag.
By corp/alliance presets, I mean a color scheme, perhaps even with words, that is screened by CCP for content, much like the alliance logos that are player created at present must be vetted and approved before they are included in patch downloads. ___________________________________

Ooh How about a cape with our corp emblem flapping behind us? Pretty glowing turrets with sparkling effects? How about "special items" that make our ships glow in the dark and shoot little fireworks and make us look "special"???
Eve's ships are machines of industry and war, not rice mobiles. Go play some other game.

I think the game developers and designers of this game have worked hard to make the ships look the way they do. The ships are colored and designed with very spacific racial characteristics, gun-metal caldari, organic green gallente, golden amarr, rough minimal minmatar. If caldari ships are suddenly pink. . .it would ruin it.
Now if its a small mark say reprisenting his or her alliance or corporation may be appropriate - if done is a ssubtle way, but total coloration and color design destroys a particular culture in the game.
So no, I don't think its a good idea. ----

The problem with allowing people to change the colour of their ships is that it will be a lot harder in PvP to quickly see if that black prophecy is actually a damnation without going through the info tabs etc, or having "ship type" displayed in overview which is more clutter imho. However I would be interested in corp/alliance insignias being applied to ships if the corp/allaiance in question wants it. I dont think it would be overly difficult to create a small texture of exsisting emblems in game and a point on each ship type of a set size where this appears. But yea, other things need doing more pressingly so this isnt a "Awwww i want this CCP", just my 2 pence worth. ----------------------------------------------- "I want to die peacefully in my sleep like Grandad....not screaming and shouting like the passengers in his car" |

Maybe just some small details, like an alliance logo on the side of your ship. Wouldn't work with all ships though.

I'm all for the alliance logo thing, and quite frankly I was expecting it with Trinity because CCP had already shown most of their previews using alliance logos (well, Red Alliance anyway).
However, full colour customisation and the like is a no. Apart from the fact that most people have the colour choosing ability of a worm, it's just not what EVE is about. More importantly, it removes the visual differences between the various ship types: Tech I, Tech II and Faction.
Also, Ambulation is not a valid argument. They are making the Ambulation engine for another game anyway, and they figured that they might as well use it in EVE seeing as they've gone to all that effort to make it.

If you where to customize the colors and stuffs on your ship you'd be the only one to see it. Ships are just an index(number) coming from the server for where in the local models-file the client should load the graphics.
That message is only a few bytes long. What you want is to get models and textures downloaded each time a new ship enters grid? Try fleet fight with that scheme in place

You shouldnt be able to touch the colors of ships but pre-designed structural addons and modifications can be easily done and added by CCP into the game. You can buy them and fit them to your ship to change the look of your ship. This wouldnt affect anything network wise in game and only require that you download the new 3d objects and textures in a patch.

/signed as a fix for blob warfare, you just TRY to get more than a couple dozen ships on a grid with this feature. --

Edited by: Jint Hikaru on 23/01/2008 17:09:16 Head over to EQ and look whats happened to the look of that game since they allowed dying armor.
For some reason it seems to have become standard for the warriors (main tanks in raids) to sport a mixture of florescent pink and lime green armor.
I have no idea where it came from, but it looks awfull.
I can understand people wanting to customise their ships, to make them more unique, but there will always be people in these games who think that changing their ship to the most garish and annoyingly awfull colours, makes them cool or something.
Adding 'spoilers' and mods to the ships... well thats just a game designers nightmare! Each 'mod' would have to be designed and rendered for every different ship in the game.

Giant fail sandwich.
City Of Heroes features the most in-depth character appearance software in any game on the face of the earth. There are billions of possible permutations of any character, the only limit is the imagination of the people making them.
So why are half the characters either bondage girls or ninja?
That's the bread of the sandwich. The meat is the lag and desynch. It is a pure fail sandwich, made of fail and lose.

I heartily agree, for all the reasons above.
I like the fact that there are black ships in the game and that these are, uncommon and rather neat looking thanks to their blackness. If everyone can spray their ships black, and they will, then what is the point in having rare ships with a unique colour scheme?
I would like to see the option of corp logo's on ships, that would be ok. More graphical variation to vessels in terms of modules fitted would be nice as well, but I imagine this will come in time.
Customisation is not a priority really. Our character portraits are customisable enough.
