The first MMORPG reference I ever encountered to carebears was in Ultima Online... Carebears was an old cartoon show that had a bunch of friendly/get along morals and characters that had 'love' powers or something... It was initially a label for those UO players seeking more places safe from non-consensual PVP...

its come from pve servers where you run into an enemy combatant where if you dont flag up you can't fight/kill each other so you just sit there and stare :)

Maybe closer to three years ago, the term "Carebears" was directed towards players that did not believe in "non-consensual" pvp what so ever. And they were insistent on changing the mechanics of the game. (They were responsible for the push of the can flipping mechanic...whoops kinda back fired) If you pvp'd on the side you were not a carebear. But now the term seems to have shifted. So now its basically up to individual interpretation I guess.

As far as I know the first time I heard it was back in 1999/2000, when I was playing UO. The world (which was nonconsensual pvp) was mirrored since everyone was leaving the game to allow people who did not want PVP a safe haven. The new world was called Trammel and people who played there were usually called trammies/trammelites/carebears etc.

UO was where I heard it first, in eve it seems to have morphed into a general term for specific activities, namely PvE. Wheather I'm mission running to up my sec, or ratting for cash, or trading, I call it carebearing I think it's becoming a general term for PvE activities now. ... Why do I PvP? Because I love the feeling I get when I see the pretty lights and know that someone somewhere is screaming incoherently at their computer screen. |

Nowadays "carebear" is thrown around a lot when a pvper comes across behaviour that is counter to his own belief on how EVE should be played.
There's no inverse of "carebear". So when pvpers post about how it sucks that they can't make enough money blowing other people up, there's no similar term to level against them.
Aside from "whiner", but then that's pretty universal.
