Because something like this would never be abused for griefing. =/
Bad idea, no consideration of the repercussions.

(Almost) everything could be used for griefing. ffs, you have thorax squads ganking freighters in 1.0 and this would be griefing?
It would solve much more than it could cause harm + it would give an entire new reason why people would scour belts and hang around behind enemy lines.
Today, peeps are in belts if they mine, rat or hunt the first two. Hence, most combat is at gates - if people scattered around to check all those giant cans holding ratting loot and valuable minerals and salvagebles their owners leave for months unattended, there would be more peeps in belts, more adrenaline fights, more ambushes, more baits more of everything.
lets prevent eve from being gate based game - lets put more content into other parts of systems.

Couple of weeks ago i probed out and found some containers. Scanned them with cargo scanner and found they carry some faction mods. Damn was i ****ed, sitting there. One laser fitted destroyer and half an hour, and I would be rich IF CONTAINERS DROPPED LOOT. Or IF HACKING MODULE ACTUALLY HACKED encrypted cans.
Come on CCP :) This would be great fun, think about it :)

/signed - hacking should work on secure cans too - however, there should be a special 'advanced hacking' module that requires greater skills to use, and costs a lot more. Also, 10-20k m^3 secure cans should be introduced to balance this out. ======

Totally agreed, with some counter. There should be an encryption skill, that will set a encryption strength when a can is anchored, so someone with a really good encryption skill, would have a stronger can, harder to hack. Also, on a hacking attempt, aggression flag is set, and notice is sent ot the can owner. This should give a chance, if the owner is near, to retaliate.
Task List:- Cans need a base encryption strength attribute when anchored (tech 2 containers, faction containers)
- Encryption skill - 15% increase in anchored can encryption strength per level
- Hacking skill to work on anchored secure cans
- Destroyed cans have loot drop chance (can wreck, with no salvage, so it's not a can blowing up and turning into a can)
- Can Attacked/Hacked notification to owner. If anchored for corp, via corpmail.

I'm not sure about this one. It is still personal property, so vandalism should still warrant concord intervention.

Hacking modules should reveal some letters of the password for each successful attempt - guessing passwords would save a lot of time , if they can be guessed (gibberish with numbers being harder to find)

It allows the ore thieves to hack your secure cans. no way. oret hieves have too many diffrent methods as it is to ruin the game play for miners. Though I would like to see something in place to be able to thin out the can issue. something like if the can isnt opened in 30-60 days it automatically unanchors.

This right here. Make it invention, faction cans sound a little silly though.
Balance out the variables on the hacking mod time and strength, and can base strength and % bonus's.
Would be a way for the players to help the rest of the cluster.

I intended the faction can comment to be a litle tongue in cheek.. guess i forgot the smiley. Anyways, obviously there would be some balancing to be had.

There would be some decent timeframe to hack a can, just as in hacking exploration sites. The act of attempting a hack would give killrights, so I fail to see how this is a bad thing. If you are sitting there, watching an ore thief hack your can, and do nothing about it, you deserve to get your ore looted.

simple. make concord pwn you for hacking a can. same as freighters. makes them "more secure" than just giving kill rights.

why not just remove the secure cans from the game then? i mean if they decide to make them hackable then noone will use them unless they dont know their secure can isn't so secure. so then you just have a redundant item in the game. make more sense just to remove them then to make them redundant and screw the few folks who lost stuff because they didnt see the change coming. |

No you didn't. Containers can't be probed out, perhaps you busted a ship in a SS with containers but you sure didn't get a scan result on a container.

In theory this is a fine idea, but realistically no one would leave their s**t around in "secured" cans anymore. I mean we use locks in real life b/c they work for the most part and you don't have everyone and their dog going around trying to pick every lock they see, but in a game everyone would just start picking every lock they see. Let's use our brains a bit more, the post about a secured can that has been unaccessed for a long period of time might be the better idea, not the best one maybe, but at least someone is thinking.

I guess no one thought about the fact that within the 1st week of this patch everyone would no longer put loot in secure containers ever again (and transport all their loots elsewhere).. so you will be hacking empty cans.
