I have been doing a lot of mission in amarr area and i have accumulate a lot of faction points. I am at a point i can buy a nice faction item.
However since i am Gallente i was told by a friend I can not use it and I can only use gallente faction items. Is this true? and I can only use gallente faction items for my ship.
P.S. I am using Gellente ships.

Usage of items is only determined by the skills you have, not race.

Check you have the skills to use the faction item. Faction ships require the relevant racial spaceship command skill (e.g. the Amarr Navy Slicer (Amarr faction Frigate) requires Amarr Frigate level 3), and faction modules often have the same skill requirements as the tech 1 version of the module
The skill requirements of the item can be found using the "show info" option.

Ok confused now. Does it means I must have a faction ship to use faction items? or regular T1 ship can fit faction items.

I think what your friend is trying to say is you can only use your Gallente Navy (or whatever) points in the Gallente Navy LP store, and thus you'll only buy gallente navy stuff.
You can use anything you have skills for though and they fit on any races ships.

Your second idea is correct. Just as tech one ships can fit tech two modules, non-faction ships can fit non-faction modules and vice versa. A notable exception to this is the Covert Ops Cloak II (only *****ble on cov-ops ships and Force Recons).
