As far as I can gather its an area of space you can only access or leave through a narrow passage or "door".
The area will thus be a small area that you can get trapped in but will feature alot more profitable NPC oponents to fight.
What else that will be found in the badlands of space I have no idea however I expect the devs to make it fun to go there as they speak so warmly of their new baby :)

Probably featuring intra dimensional layers near your hood!
Or an entrance to jove space combined with some dangerous NPC guards. That sounds cool.

I'd assume that dungeons are limited access systems with themed encounters. One gate in and out and a number of ugly gang battles between you and the good stuffs hidden there.
