So I've finally decided to cave in an buy a headset with microphone... (yes yes I know... It's been said a million times already)
I've spend the last 3 hours!! surfing the net to try and find the solution that is right for me, but simply can't figure out what to go for...
It seems I have several opposing (sigh..) requirements...
1: I have a rather awesome sound setup, which I wish to be able to continue to use. Ie. I dont want to sit around all evening listening to sound from the headset only.
I have some Godly speakers (sub weighs 25kg...) Logitech Z-5500
and a soundcard to match
Creative SB X-FI Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series
2: When having to use the headset, I would like to have equally good sound (as well as a headset is capable anyhow), so a 5.1 capable headset is a must (or...?)
---------
So I've scanned the net... It would seem that 2: is doable, excellent 5.1 headsets (with mic) exist - However... For those to work there seems to be two options available A: The headset has 4 jacks (front, mid, rear, mic), which needs to be connected to the soundcard This then means removing the speaker jacks... (negating my requirement #1) I'm not gonna fiddle with *that* back and forth each time... So thats apparently a no go...
B: USB Unfortunatly those solutions completly bypass the soundcard... This means two things i: Not using the capabilities (with all what that entails) of the soundcard (well doh mr obvious) ii: Put's extra stress on the CPU (as the soundcard hardware is no longer handling the sound)
Now my system is no sluch - CPU is E6700. So I'm not sure ii) will even be measurable, not to mention noticable at all. i) is just plain annoying... Nice soundcard, and then not use it... Not to mention having to load some (crap?) extra driver on my system, to drive sound (for the headset)... Would rather not tbh...
A third option is C: Ditch the requirement for 5.1 sound, and a get a really good stereo headset, and simply plug that into the front bay of the soundcard system. I'm not sure, but I *think* that might allow me to run the speakers at the same time. Just bugs me not getting the better 5.1 headset, now that I'm going to get a set anyhow... Seems silly not to...
Which then leads me to D: Seeing as all I *actaully* want, is the ability to speak, all I really need is a microphone. So.. Why not just get a microphone, ditch the headset. Well... Main problem will be that the mic is gonna pick up the sounds from the speakers..... (right?) Did a real quick scan for gaming mic's - didnt see anyone mention "noise-reduction" (which is used to cancel out background noise - such as speakers)
--------------
So arg.... really dont know what way to go atm....
Suggestions to "solve" the above are very much welcome - and do share your own experiences...
Specific product recomendations would be *very much* appriciated.
And I don't mind splashing out a bit extra for that *just right* setup, that somehow magically solves all my problems (conflicting requirements)

You could do what I do - put in a cheap second soundcard, keep the good one as the windows deafult soundcard on your speaker system, plug the headset into the cheap card and set TS / Vent to use that card.
Works a treat for me....

if you have found a 5.1 surround sound headset that has a boom mic, I'd like to know about it.
So far I've yet to find one. and i'd really like one.

@Fodan
Something else to ponder - Definatly.
Wouldnt go with a really cheap soundcard though - As I'd still want good 5.1...
But - Worth pondering.
@Maraude Fury
Heres a couple
Razer Barracuda HP-1 Almost went for the Razor one myself, until I realised it got 4 jacks..
Speed Link Medusa 5.1 Surround Headset Seems quite ok as well (it's heavily linked if you search google for headset 5.1)
Plenty more out there

Why have 5.1 when that channel just carries voice?
(I may have explained the concept poorly )
Idea is you continue listening to game sounds / music on the speakers and just pop the headset on when you want to talk / listen to voice (a lightweight headset that doesn't interfere too much with hearing the sound out the speakers is best). The PC will direct the different sounds from different programs to the 2 separate soundcards simultaneously no problems. Its also easier to make out the voices when they are not mixed in with other stuff in the headphones.
First came across this idea when someone I know had set up one PC to be able to play 3 different songs simlutaneously in 3 rooms in his house

i can only really suggest looking at bluetooth. the problem is bluetooth as a whole sucks, but it will work for what you are doing

They do what they say on the tin but I always found the sound quality kinda dissapointing for listening to music. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 31/01/2008 22:01:14 you could always go for a USB 5.1 headset, that way your card isn't affected.
The trouble then is finding a good one.
This might be a nice one Although i have no idea on audio quality.

Sounds like you have a simple switching problem.
Nothing that can't be fixed easily with a soldering iron and a few parts: * a 8-contact, 2-position switch * 8 "female" stereo jacks * 4 "male" stereo jacks * assorted lengths of wire * some kind of "housing" for all of this

I got the Fatality one and its truly a nice Headset! Full basse and good noise canceling! also a good sound for music...
5.1 headset are crap! they are expensive and the 5.1 sound is not the same as the 5.1 sound from a true soundsystem, u got 3 small speakers on every side with a stereo headset u got 1 big speaker for good bass on every side, with the CMSS 3D system from creative the 5.1 simulation for stereo headsets u got a better sound as the medusa creates (i had an medusa for a couple of days... and it was crap!)
My advice is, buy the fatality one its cheap it looks real cool and it gots real kickin sound!

Two options for ya.

or
http://www.andreaelectronics.com/Buy/ProductDesc/Superbeam_Array.htm
The first is accually a Playstation 2 Mic. It acts as a seperate sound card, you can tell TS/Vent/anything to play through this while having your games sounds play through your regular speakers, its lightweight and dosent cover the whole ear allowing you to hear out of that ear also.
The second is a nice mic that I got along with my ASUS striker extreme MOBO about 6 months back and though I havent use it my-self It is a directional mic and is ment to be used in areas where background noise is a problem, and is ment also to hone in on voices. TBH I feel the first is the best choice but its all up to the user. Hope this helps, Happy hunting.

...you could buy some splitters. That way you could have both the headset and speakers plugged into the same jack at the same time. They cost like 5-10 dollars and you'd need one for every cable except the mic.

That's actually the kind of thing I was thinking of looking at first, but didnt even try, as I didnt think there'd be a 4 (rear, mid, front, mic) to 8 splitter.
This is yet one of those D'Oh moments, I dont need any bloody 4 to 8 splitter 4 * 1 to 2 will ofc do just as well :-) (and I only need 3 in fact, as the mic line dont need a splitter)
But if anyone has seen a 4 to 8 (or 3 to 6) splittter out there, do tell.
Leaning heavily towards this solution atm - Next step is then finding the ultimate headset ;)
I'm still liking the Razor one I linked...
