So I got my new Scorpion I had been looking forward to for a while. I had just got me a spanking new lvl 3 agent so thought I would go and kick arse and make me some nice isk...wrong.
Can't remember the mission name now, sorry, but everything started out well enough but as more and more enemy ships spawned I realised that it was going to be tougher than I thought.
Damage started to creep up, slowly but surely so I aligned just in case I needed to jump out. Sure enough the damage started to ramp up as the Scorp is so damn slow and I was out-numbered about 15 to one by now.
So I decided to warp to the gate right in front of me which I had aligned to...nothing. Tried again nothing. By now my heart was thumping away like mad as I realised I had been scrambled, or eve had locked up, my pc was playing up or I had grown another 8 thumbs to replace my fingers...gulp.
It was now a case of how many times could I try to warp out before a. I died or b. I really died via a heart attack as this game certainly makes you feel like you're really there living the moment. Anyway to cut it short after a brief moment of wondering if now was a good time to up the insurance on the ship past basic, kabooom....pod time.
This left me sorely tempted to throw my laptop through the nearest window and only resisted as I'd only got it for Christmas and even I'm not quite that stupid. I just vowed never to play this stupid unfair game ever again, well, for about 10 mins anyway.
So by now you should know a few things. I have rubbish skills, rubbish experience in missions above lvl 2 and a ship setup to match as I've only been playing for 3 months. You also know I suck at writing too but ramble on anyway ;)
So my big question is, how the hell do I do run lvl 3+ missions without losing my ship in future? how can I get my confidence back to even warp into a lvl 3+ mission in the first place?
The thing that caught me totally unaware was being warp scrambled, I just didn't know this happened in missions, naive I know with hindsight, but it just never occured to me and losing a 60 mill ship was a painful way of finding out.
Is there a quick and easy way to find out which ships have scramblers on board? I need to be able to kill these quick or I'll never feel safe.
I know if I get scrambled a message can flash up on screen but these survive a nano second if there is loads of action going on. Is there a way of veiwing all these messages again somehow? dropping the console or something?
Lastly I've looked at loads of PVE setups and never seen any warp stabs setups so there must be a preferred method to avoid getting scrambled. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
I know about the Eveinfo and eve-survival web sites now by the way, these will help but I'd rather be able to identify the threats myself if possible.

First thing that comes in mind: Don`t use a scorpion for missions; it has no bonusses that helps towards it; it`s an e-war ship (and a great one at that)
I suggest you skill up your support skills first (power-shield & weapons) they are more important then a new ship.
As for ships to run missions in; I`d sugest a Battlecruiser; more exactly the Drake; it`s a good tankingship and can take quite a beating. -------------- Cleaning up wrecks others leave behind! Got to keep space clean! |

Nice story :)
To avoid getting scrambled, make sure you kill frigs and stain drones as fast as possible. You can also turn off some combat messages to see the scramble message easier.
But more important: scorpion sucks for missions. Get a raven instead. And get level 4 in all relevant skills before flying it into missions.
Use a setup like this on the raven: High: 6*cruise, 2*whatever (nos perhaps) Med: xlarge shield booster, 2*rat specific hardener, 2*shield boost amps, cap recharger Low: 3*PDU, 2*BCU Rigs: 3*CCC
That should be a safe enough setup for a new player.

Also, you need to read up on the missions. Sounds like you got something like "The Blockade" or "Attack of the Drones" that spawns more ships when you kill some of the existing ones. The solution to those missions is save the ships that cause a spawn for last. Your scorpion probably should have been able to take that mission, given proper play.

Edited by: Vikarion on 02/02/2008 11:55:16 First, while you CAN use a scorpion for missions, a Drake is best. Or, if you want to spend massive amounts of ISK on a ship that will take just as long in level 3s and cost far more to operate, then use a Raven. EDIT: For level 4s, use a Raven or other good BS.
Second, I bet you were doing 5/7 of New Frontiers, right? I lost a BC on that mission. Always target Strain drones first, use eve-survival ,and, lastly, insure your ship.
Don't feel too bad about losing a Scorpion, BTW. For you shall lose many more ships of much greater ISK value, and you shall eventually learn that it is only ISK. Besides, the first time is always the worst.
As for knowing that you are warp-scrambled...well, usually there are these little blue dotted lines you can barely see traversing the space between you and the offending...offender. That should be a "kill me now" sign for you. --------

1) Some missions inherently scramble your warp it's a deadspace thing as far as i know. only way i've found to avoid those missions is to setup a waypoint and align to that. than when the brown stuff hits the spinny thing hit autopilot.
2) check the mission and see what damage types you have to tank against.
3) check and see which ships are the triggers and make sure to save those for last.
4) as others have said skill up your secondary skills to better tank the dmg.

Thanks for the replies and support, it much appreciated :)
I've never noticed those little Blue dotted lines before so I'll watch for those in future and will read up on all missions before jumping in.
Pity there doesn't seem to be any way to repeat or scroll through old messages but I'll try to turn off some of the other messages as suggested.
Cheers,

I suspect each and every one of us at one time or another swore we would quit eve because we lost a ship. Then we hitched our trousers up (ummm, don't know what females do)got another ship and went back at it.
While jumping into a larger ship sounds logical, use a smaller ship until you get revelant skills to at least lvl 4. Stay in lvl 2 missions until you can breeze through all of them. Also keep notes. Sometimes you don't do a mission for awhile and notes give you a reminder of how it went and what to prepare fore.

It's been mentioned before, but we can't mention it enough. KILL THE FRIGS. Yep, those insignificant little frigs are the typical source of all your warp-scrambling woes. Kill them early, and you can run like hell later if needed. _______________________________

Edited by: Asmosis on 04/02/2008 06:35:32 Its worth noting that 90% of everything that warp scrambles within missions also flies within smartbomb range.
As a general rule I dont use SB's because i tend to wipe out my drones by accident though, and cloaked pirates will try to get inside your SB range.
Failing that light/medium drones make short work of frigs, for some reason mediums are better for me. The light ones can't seem to track frigs (nav III, sharpshooting V). Might just be orbiting in opposite direction to frigs orbit resulting in exponential transversial.

-Never take your brand new ship into a brand new situation. Either take your brand new ship into a situation you are comfortable with to see how it performs, or take a ship whose capabilities you know well and you can afford ot lose into new situaitons.
-Do not use battleships in level 3's. You are fighting mostly cruisers and frigates. BS are massive overkill.
-Use a missile drake for level 3's. Passive tank it. (Large shield extenders, active hardeners matching the damage type the NPC rats do, etc) You shouldn't have to warp out ever, so warp scrambling is not a problem.
-Anyone who warp scrambles you is an elite frigate class, so concentrate on killing those. Normal frigates will not scramble you. Elite frigates usually have an extra word in their name compared to normal frigates, or are named differently. They also have much larger bounties than normal frigates.
For drones it's tricky, since they all have 'frigate' icons and no bounties to tip you off as to which is which. Typically though 'elite' drones have an additional word in their name. Look for the elite drones circling your ship at close range and pop those first.
-Using light drones to attack and kill warp scrambling frigates is an excellent tactic - if you command your drones to kill a target they will keep doing it, even if you get jammed and lose the lock later on.
-Don't use the scorpion for missions, it's a bad missioning ship. When you do get up to use battleships (for L4's) choose a raven if flying Caldari
-Don't always be racing up to the next biggest ship - be sure to flesh out those support skills.

First mistake: Scorpion for L3's. Use a Drake, and passive tank it. This means Large Shield Extenders, Shield Resistance Amps, Shield Power Relays, and Core Purger Rigs.
With moderate skills you can get a Drake with 17k+ shields (nice buffer) and a 400sec recharge. (40/sec or so) With good skills, you'll never lose a Drake unless you're really really really reckless.
Second mistake: Crap skills. Skill up your engineering skills to L4.
Third mistake: Pop frigs. They warp scramble.

I usually kill things in the following order. Frigs & Destroyers, Battlecruisers, Cruisers, Battleships last.
Frigs first because they jam and are harder to hit once they're up close.
Battlecruisers second because they do more damage than cruisers, but are as easy or easier to kill because of their larger sig radius.
Cruisers next because they die quicker than BSes and there's usually a lot of them.
BSes last because they don't do as much damage vs. how long it takes to kill them and they also make good cap batteries with Nos. Or they did. (Didn't we nerf nos a while ago?)
Anyways. It's all about nixing the most enemy DPS in the shortest amount of time; so your tank holds.

- There is absolutely no reason that I can think of to use a Battleship in level 3's. Battleships should strictly be for level 4's.
- Scorpions are pretty much the worst PvE battleship I can think of. They should be used for jamming in PvP and that's it. The scorpion has what? 4 unbonused launchers? (I never have flown one so its off the top of my head) vs. a raven with 6 bonused launchers. I don't know the exact math, but I'm pretty sure that's like a 98% higher DPS with battleship 5.
- I used to fly level 3's with a ferox before the T2 BC's came out. It worked way better than my Raven (Which I also had. I was too crappy to do level 4's in it so I stuck to 3's) and I know the Drake would be even better than the Ferox.
- The method to avoid being scrambled would be to kill the frigate sized ships first. That's all. In level 4's, the same method applies. In my Raven, I usually target one frig, then all the other targets are cruisers. I set my medium drones on the frigate ship and use my missiles to blast the cruisers. Since the drone AI is improved, they all attack the other frigates as a unit, (As far as I know they go from smallest to biggest target).
That's pretty much it really.
