I could be convinced to pay for this quite easily. Here's my idea.
We already have a program that can pull all the assets for all of your characters. The EVE Asset Manager
We know how much items refine into, it's listed in the items database and I imagine parseable from a data dump.
We can pull average/avg_sell pricing from eve-central, or from our own market log dumps, for all the minerals.
How about this: A program that loads up your assets and calculates the amount of mins, and the sale value of those mins, you would get from reprocessing your assets (possibly including a variable rate for mins lost to tax or less than perfect refining).
Then generating a report of all assets which are more valuable after refining ad those which would be better to sell.
I'm a little excited so I hope this was clear, I haven't programmed since VB back in the day so I have no idea how hard this would be, or how long it would take, but it seems perfectly feasible to me!

Interesting idea. I'll put it on my todo list but it probably won't get in for a while as I'm busy withj other stuff atm.

Edited by: Goncyn on 08/02/2008 00:51:26 I'm planning on adding a refining report to the next version of EVE Asset Manager. I'm not sure about comparing market prices of items vs. minerals, though, for the same reason we discussed in my thread. I did send a question over to the eve-central maintainer asking what he thought about pricing all items, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

Well, the matari mineral index has an RSS feed for average mineral prices if I remember correctly, I am not positive though. That would be easy since the bandwidth use on pulling 10 numbers is pretty much negligible.

Yes, I'm already using eve-central to price minerals, that's not a problem. It's getting market prices for ALL your items, to "generating a report of all assets which are more valuable after refining ad those which would be better to sell" that's the problem. I can easily give you the mineral valuation after reprocessing, though, and let you do any comparisons for individual items yourself.

I am dumb and shouldn't be posting when I'm sleepy .
The way it's setup now it hammers eve central for a price on each item whenever you generate that report I assume? I don't know much about it so I won't try to make more suggestions, hopefully they get back to you and a solution is had since that would be a magnificent tool.

Currently, EVE Asset Manager makes one request to EVE-Central for each item type in the Materials report. The results are cached for one day. So if you generate a Materials report, then generate another one 5 hours later, you are using the cached prices the second time, and no additional requests are made.
The difference between pricing the Materials report and pricing everything is in the number of item types. There are only 153 item types in the 'Material' category. There are 15,710 total item types in the game. Not all of those are things players can actually own, but a player could conceivably have several thousand item types in his possession. One request to EVE-Central is required to get prices for each item type.
Let's assume your pricing cache is empty and you generate a report. For the Materials report, the greatest number of EVE-Central requests you can make is 153, one for each type of Material. For a general report that includes all your assets, you could potentially generate thousands of requests in only one or two seconds.
This would be sort of like a denial of service attack on EVE-Central. Which is why I want to discuss it with the operator of that site before I go and do anything foolish. It's possible we could work something out that would be less crazy, and I'll be sure to let you know if we do.

I guessed that was it. I had a brief though, but it would be something eve-central would have to do.
A separate compiled list of prices for only the top items. Top being, perhaps, the top 15% of all items volume-wise. Or a list of only items whose cost is above a certain threshold. (such as list would conceivably hold all battleship modules).
Most people don't care about selling they're 10x passive targeters, since the difference in refine price or sell price is negligible when the module is only worth 10k isk, but people do care about those 5x Modulated Tachyon Beams.
I personally like the volume idea, as the higher the volume the more likely you are to sell the item. Doesn't matter if the Micro Cap Booster is worth 10x it's refine value if the volume is only 10 a day.
BTW, sent you a little something for your work, I think it's great what you've done.

This would be an extremely useful tool. Particularly if integrated with some check-list to select & refine or select and move to sell, which re-polled to check you got it right.
