Can it be done CCP? Code-wise, time-wise, will-wise...

I actually liked the bug that only showed the stuff you had on your overview. Not really a fan of the lag caused by 15719875019840129 drones on screen when all i want to see are ships

Please do, except take it one step farther: add an option to disable rendering of any ships/objects you like. Make it so you can disable them like the "show on overview" check boxes. All disabled ships are just rendered as the 2d icon, cutting some of the lag from larger fights. Sure, it won't look as good, but running at .5 fps doesn't look good anyway.

I recently haven't had a problem with eve rendering all of the things on screen. I fixed that a while back when i got some extra goodies for my computer. I thought it would help with the lag, it did a little. But its still just as irritating when you can see everything and have to watch eve on a bungee cord while the server catches up

Here's a similar idea: Stop rendering item portraits as full 3D models and replace them with static 2D images. ---

Try the new brackets for overview, its kinda what you want i think.
It boosted my fps by alot when i filtered drones in the ffa arenas, so filtering different things in fleet battles should be nice.

Not also rendering drones but maybe also sending the information on drones/fighters current location in space to the client? Like only send info on which fighter/drone currently shoots which ship? It will reduce lag a lil bit. Won't do a miracle, but at least something.

Wait, there's the cache for this! It caches pictures generated.
Removing the annoying X moving around just as the container icons in space... We just don't care (sometimes).
I have to hit alt to see structures and some stuff while I am permanently aggressed by the little yellow boxes!
It has to go in steps in the options : choose in space markers to render, then choose the 3d objects never to use model, just a dot (for drones - it draws a dot for things on long range).
And for the possible drone lag on server side : make them immaterial! No bumping, less spatial calculations (the ones that I suppose happens between all the ships in the same grid, it reduces complexity a big time there I guess as you can bring so many drones), no more asynchronous drone bumping (that makes your client show you teleport or bump some way after the drone came or maybe enven causes some postional desync necause the client didn't realize you were bumped by a drone). -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Brackets look nice but only thing i see them doing is clear your screen not reducing lag cause you still need to render the objects.

But is it possible to tell the server "stop informing me about that thing" cause the server just sends information to everyone that is on the grid. And sends information about everything that happens on the grid and you only 'save' yourself from lag if you leave the grid (although not always...).
So if you are in the grid you must get the packet, thats server's policy. Now how can you tell the server to ignore some packets through just an option you can check or uncheck any time... Maybe if that option can be changed only if you change system? So when you enter the system server is informed about what kind of packets you want him to send you?

The server should always send everything. Then, you render with 3d models only what you really need. You hide some types of models that get replaced by a dot (LOD often puts drones as dots, it's aready this way) and never get loaded (it's an LOD configuration, with some luck, it could fit in the current system without too much more). Then, you choose the icons you want. Then you can begin turning off effects (choosing what effects you turn off, not just all turret or all effects). If they could turn off and on automatically based on how intense is the CPU usage would be cool (less configuration, more play!).
And it seems that many things are calculated both serverside and on the client, ship bumping seems to be like that and such is calculated so you don't get the ship to bump 'latency' after going through another... Thus, making drone immaterial would help clients too?
