I will get my Thanatos real soon. I heard a lot of people talking about different uses... from the intended fleet suport to the carebearistic role of jumping cargo ship.
I would like to know what you use your Thanatos for. What different things can you do with it in all areas (combat, logistic, carebearism, etc)?
Thanks |

It can solo level 5 missions. You can find a level 5 agent in Auga for example.

If you don't know how carriers work or what they are for then DO NOT get one yet.
There is a LOT of documentation on how they work and what they can do both in game and on this site. Try searching a bit.
In summary:
Carriers provide fighters for extra damage support.
They can carry a large ammount of Frigate and Cruiser class ships, OR a smaller number of Battlecruiser or Battleship class ships in their hold, as in-battle replacements or to help with moving ships around space quickly.
They generally get bonuses to remote armour/shield repairing or capacitor transfering to assist in fleet battles.
They also have corporate hangers and ship maintenance arrays to allow further logistics and in-space fitting of ships.
They cannot use jump bridges and cannot use clone vat bays.
But do not think from my description alone you can know everything. Search the forums and the eve site and find as much information as you can BEFORE even buying/building one. |

I LOLed at that one but thanks for all the other info. By that I understand that besides being a really big domi and a mini jumping cargo ship, there aren't many other things I could do with it. I do need jumping abilities to by-pass some perma-camped location, that alone makes me feel all warm inside. But now I understand why the carrier is cheaper than the dred... it has very limited roles. |

The thanatos can perform logistics,tank,damage...It can also haul mass amounts of stuff.
Its biggest role which is now less then it used to be is shock factor, when in battle a carrier used to be a ship that makes everybody reconsider their quarry, although its less now it can still have this affect on smaller engagements. This is what happens when a kestrel with thermal missiles declares war on earth |

I might be making one my long-term goal, so I'd appreciate a few answers.
1. How do you make money in one? Or can you? So far each ship I've gotten I've used to try to boost me to the point where I don't worry about losing it. Can you do that for a carrier, or is it all about the corpmates/L4 mission whoring? I've heard about L5 missions some, but would like more info on it.
2. Is it possible to duo with one (and your cyno alt)?
3. Are max-fighter gank setups actually viable? -------------------------------------------------- <3 my Drones |

Avenger - How about using the search function. Forums are not for spam and repeated questions. Look at past questions, find your answer - If not, then make a new thread.
Having said that, you flame anyone who posts any answer, so you wont mind me calling you a nub if you think a dread has more roles than a carrier. But hey - More nub carrier pilots is rather nice in the big picture.
Dont forget, you cant get t2 cap armor reps, so go t2 large instead.

I did use the search function and all it came up was with the item database thread, a 2006 fitting thread and a lot of WTB/WTS threads. Maybe if I spend a lot of time reading all the threads I could find more info, but there were not many threads on the subject.
If we have weekly threads for raven/megathron/gankagedon etc etc etc, I don't think it would hurt to have an aditional Thanatos thread (assuming a good one already exist).
I do thank people who post answers but I also reply to the "read the documentation you idiot" comments... linkey or that documentation doesn't exist. I don't mind you calling me a nub. On the carriers subject I am a nub. I never aimed to have a carrier. I'm only getting one because it is an alliance requirement. I guess I'll end up killing lots of drone controllers without having to unload the cargo bay every 2 spawns.
I thought the dred had more roles because it has turrets. So besides combat, you could, erm mine with it (yes yes yes I know how carebear that sounds). Maybe I'm wrong, like I said, I'm a capital noob. But if carrier > dred, then their prices are set wrong I guess. WTF, even a navythron cost more than the Thanatos.
Anyway, I never expected a lot of answers. I know that only a small percent of people in this forum can actually fly one, and only a fraction of those can fly one well.
PS: No, I don't have the spel cheker turned on today. I'm not in my pc, sory for the mispellings, I'm can't tip3 without the spel sheker. |

Dreads have the two roles of killing super capitals(or just capitals)in ambush situations and pos bashing, the reason they are more expensive is the mats to build them are more I believe.
As for info,im sorry but I dont know any other sources. This is what happens when a kestrel with thermal missiles declares war on earth |

I take it that you are an alt since you are in a NPC corp. Thanatos in conjuction with a Rorqual or Jump Freighter it can be a good logistic asset.
Thanatos is also a good combat vessel. It also require you to think twice, since a Thanatos is not a solo own mobile. If you don't have a support fleet or other carriers that can support you, then just self destruct your carrier.
So what can you do? Already been mentioned, sit at a pos and assign fighters to your corp/alliance mates. You can act as a repair ship, have Capital Armor and Hull rapair fitted in your highs. So then you can also help repairing POS moduls that have taken damage from a POS assault (your POS of course). Using a carrier as a gate camping ship you can pretty fast lose your thanatos that way.
If you really want to learn how to use a Thanatos, observe those in your corp/alliance how they use it, ask them questions, figure out what kinda of fuel your carrier need to jump (Thanatos is using Oxygen Isotopes). Start a discussion on your corp/alliance forums on how to use a carrier properly. If your corp/alliance is well organized then you can find plenty of help how to use your Thanatos properly.
When it comes to fittings, your thanatos is not a tackle ship. Don't waste midslots on tackle fittings fit Capacitor Rechargers along with 1 or 2 Sensor boosters. Use the right rigs (3 CCC's).
Don't do a Leroy Jenkis in your carrier, it will get you killed. --- It have always fallen to a few to sacrifice for the good of many

Seriously you think a dread is more versatile than a carrier? Is this a really bad attempt at trolling your own thread.
In case you are serious no a dread is not more versatile and turrets do not equal versatility.

And yet another capital noob question:
Assuming similar skill levels for both pilots and using the most popular setups from the forums, on a 1 vs 1, Moros Vs Thanatos, who do you think has a better chance? |

They tank eachother....Which hurts the other more?Well id say the dread until the carrier starts moving then the carrier. This is what happens when a kestrel with thermal missiles declares war on earth |

You cannot really compare these two. A Moros has a different use then a Thanatos. But to answer your question: In a really, really unlikely situation where a Thanatos and a Moros would meet in combat, then it will likely be a draw. A Moros without siege does not have enough DPS to break the tank of the Thanatos and the same applies for the tank of the Moros.
Of course a neutralizer setup would change that, if the Thanatos is neutraliziing the Capacitor of the Moros, then the Moros will die. But again, a Capital Ship 1vs1 will only happen on Singularity but never on Tranquility.

No one cap ship (freighters exempt, doh) should be able to kill another one cap ship, provided both pilots know anything about how to fit and use them.
Simple facts: Every races carrier, dread and mothership can fit a 4-5k DPS tank with t2/mild faction gear. The max theoretical dps of carriers, dreads and moms is 1k/3k/2k respectively, racial deviations put aside.

Thank you guys for your comments/ideas about the uses for a Thanatos. please keep them coming if you have more. I will read them later as now I have to go ride bikes with my kids.
To the flamers, I know you guys don't have a life and fora-whora the whole day to the point you get infuriated when you see yet another poster asking a question. I forgive you because I know that very deep inside, you are really nice guys. Except of course 'L70Rogue' cuz using a WoWish name on EvE is just wrong.
When I get the carrier, I shall honor Chribba by loading some mining drones and hitting some veldspar. After all, it's gonna be another week till I could use fighters. I will however petition demanding fighter sized mining drones, made by ORE and called 'The Chribusk'.
