How much fun are they to fly? I never see posts on here that start out like "So me and a few friends were cruising around in our carriers blowing up noobs" And I hardly see any conversations about fitting them on the ships forum.
I am just curious because a few stories about capital ships are what got me into eve in the first place

This thread is gonna fill up with **** real quick.
Before it does, the thing to understand is that cap ships are not just giant pwnmobiles. They are fleet support ships, which are quite vulnerable without the proper support fleets.

This basically, they can be fun to fly if your into logistics and heavy tanking/damage...But they are used for defence are extremely large engagements. This is what happens when a kestrel with thermal missiles declares war on earth |

it is fun to hot-drop a few carriers spider repping eachother in the middle of an enemy fleet... and just fighter spam and smartbomb the hell out of them... (make sure you keep your fighters away from you, lol)

Ironically enough, I know someone who used a Nyx exactly for that purpose, a giant solo pwnmobile. (Needless to say, he lost it).

this is the life of a capital pilot (in an alliance)
'hostiles in system, x up in *insert intel channel here* and prepare for undock, cyno jammer is onlining' 'get ready to undock' 'jammers up, go go go' *undocks to see 40 reds, warp instantly to a gate* 'well crap, everyone dock'
or this
'everyone ready to cyno, cap at 100%?' *everyone says yes* 'cynos lit' *everyone jumps* *15minutes later* 'im bad in armor, running shield booster, need remote reps' Your friendly insurance company has returned 733 mil for the loss of 'chimera' we regret your loss and have given you ANOTHER rookie ship
dont go capital right away, its an end game ship...

The big reason you don't see forum posts on the fittings is there is very little variability in fitting. You have maybe 3 jobs you can do and there is no way to nano up a carrier... yet... though we are trying...
As for flying them here is a general timeline:
10:00 Gather at X POS, move to edge of shields. Stop ratting you $^#%#*@'s 11:00 Sit there 12:00 Go get lunch make sure screen saver doesn't desync you 13:00 RAWR! 14:00 18:00 WAKE UP PEOPLE! 19:00 Jump to XXX person! 20:00 Who has loaded the grid? 20:05 NEED ARMOR NEED ARMOR NEED ARMOR 21:00 Check Combat log and post kills/go buy next ship
It isn't what most people play a game for. =P

I'm training for a carrier, but only so i can move my ships and stuff around, with the changes to ship hanger array this has become a viable use. You can put in a few HACs, a CS or 2 BSes to go, its a good way to move to the Pirate faction space of EvE to rat or do missions in.
Befor the patch i was thinking of getting one so i can help out fuel POSes and move goods from Empire to 0.0.

Edited by: Jennai on 12/02/2008 06:54:37 carriers are fun for other people, if there's a grid with hostiles that you can fighterbomb, but not so many hostiles that your fighterbombers lag out and die on warping in.
if this condition isn't met, then carriers aren't very fun for anyone because all they do is either sit on a pos and rep it, or sit in a blob and rep each other while the 500 fighters on grid make it impossible for anyone to do anything.
I have a carrier and all I use it for is moving ships around because pos warfare sucks and capital blob fights are too laggy to be fun.

The main reason for this is because you can't actually 'cruise' around in them. They don't use gates and are therefore very 'cruise' unfriendly. I don't really have any intentions of flying any due to this, but love the addition of hictors to counter them with a good gang.
They are deadly, though. A good pilot in one with a good fitting and they'll tear shreds off many BS.

Capital fights are either one of two types.
1. Organised where people are forced to use capitals vs capitals to compleate objectives (e.g F-T, etc) 2. Someone spots a group of capitals and decides to hot drop more capitals on top to gank them. This can also be recursive (hot dropping a hot drop for example)
Carriers are ok but dreads are what wins capital fights. A smartbomb ship (or even smartbomb carrier covering dreads) in the right place can render dozens of carriers damage output obsolete, even if it is not targeted. Spider tanking is not easy if you have competent people ecming you or ecm bursting you.
Major capital battles that have not be hot drops I can count on one hand. They really are that few. --

Put it this way: in theory I have enough SP to have been a carrier pilot.
In practice: hahahaha no way, chumps.
Perhaps when the server/software we have can properly support fleet battles, I might consider it. At the moment though, being a capital pilot looks like a huge chore. I am quite happy to spend the rest of this year skilling up for small & medium ships. Maybe 2009 will be the year that cap ships become fun to play - who knows?

Goes like this ,we saw that 150 guys where closing in to hour cyno gen system. We did deployed 30 carriers at the gate all fighters out ,to create massive lagg. They warping in, ships load grid ,pilots still in other system but ships are here.Let the turkey shoot begin.we 60 they 150 ,killed all 150 no losses at all .Now go to the forums that you still are loading grid but you are allready 30 min dead. Conclusion there was no fight ,this not pvp ,it`s npc vs npc .You guys lost alot isk ,go ratting for a week and try again.

I've had my most enjoyable moments in this game flying a capital ship, but there isn't the slightest chance I'd fly one if it wasn't on a dedicated alt and there was anything else left to train that I was interested in. Especially with cyno jammers blocking so many systems.

Hmmm.. A lot of dissatisfied people ITT, but they don't actually fly Capitals so they got it wrong as usual.
Carriers are a blast. I prefer to be in one than any other ship.
- Before the patch you could use them for hauling, which while boring was very profitable and necessary.
- Its the ultimate PVE ship. I frequently Rat, Mine, Mission or run Escalations or Exploration in mine. Nothing like taking on a whole Escalation gig by yourself.
- CynoJammers are nowhere near as prevalent as Cyno Generators in our space. Nice to always have an exit.
- FC's still are loathe to let you use Capitals in Fleet fights. It's apparently some kind of sin to take a Capital to a gate.
- Capital vs Capital fights are really rare.
- Delegating Fighters is what FC's want the most, but its also the most boring part of being in a Carrier. 'Hey Carrier Dudes: Send 300 mill isk worth of stuff to your buddies, and if they don't screw up bad you might get them back. Meanwhile, have fun orbiting a POS while everyone else dies/has fun.'
- Fixing POS's and ships is what you'll do 90% of the time in Fleet battles.
- God Forbid that you lose one! While the cost is not really out of line with Faction BS's or other toys, your Capital losses somehow are an unacceptable loss of isk.
- Its nice to be immune to small/medium gangs. If its Frigs/Cruisers, however, you'll probably die long-term as you will be scrambled/jammed. And Reinforcements will come.
- When you finally get into a fight against BS's, you can truly enjoy the power of your epeen ship. Nothing like watching your wing of fighters sweep the field destroying BS's in 30 sec or less.
