is there any useful technique for deploying, and anchoring, a container 5000 m from all other objects in a belt that might be fairly well populated with other GSC's - so far my tactic is one of random chance. is it possible to 'get a fix' from other objects onto a 'clear' spot?
thanks for your input.

You could just turn on things that are in the belt ON in your overview (things like the roid type, cans, etc) and then make sure your 5000m from anything, drop and anchor...should work.
I think thats what you were asking...

yo Mordin,
thanks for your suggestion.
my overview is enabled to show the roids, cans, wrecks, etc BUT moving away from one object tends to take me closer to another object which, oftentimes, is listed out of sight in the overview. As a result it therefore requires that I scroll up and down the listing to double check my distances BUT then items start moving about on the listing as the distances change SO . . .
I find Im trying to navigate, check my distances, watch for rats, deploy a container for anchoring then try and prevent it drifting within a 5km range, track items moving in the overview listing and find a heading that will provide me clear space :(

I've always had good luck just using the overview. But if that's not enough, try turning on the "Tactical Overlay". That's the button just below the scanner button, I believe. That'll show you the position of everything nearby with helpful distance markers, so you can get a better idea of which direction to go in to meet the 5000m requirement.

Ya, trying to drop one in a busy belt can be immensely painful, but thats what you have to do.
I would recommend two things: A) Move to a less populated belt. You might search for a while till you find one that has some decent space and some decent ore, but it will be much easier and more worth your while than just hitting up a crowded belt/system.
B) Double click the little heading title thingy above the distances on your overview (It is named Distances) This way it will sort the distances by either farthest or closest, making it allot easier to see whats around you without having to scroll through the overview.

When you're judging your distance from things, I assume you have your over view Sorted By Distance?
Click on ICon, Name, Distance near the top of the over view and it will sort that way.
I find it convenient to sort by ICon when I'm traveling but then sort by Distance once I'm in the belts.
As to GSC's ... I gave up on them. They don't hold enough and are more trouble than they're worth. I just dump into a jet can which my hauler immediately empties so there's nothing in it but a book mark for someone to steal.
I make the book mark by going into people and places, then clicking on the bookmark button at the bottom of the page, then I drag the new bookmark into my hold, then over into the jet can (you can't drag it directly to the jet can from people and places).
I fit as many GSC's in the hold of my hauler as I can - as they only take up 3000m3 but hold 3900m3 - but that's all I use them for.

i gave em up as well...but what you CAN do is mine part of the belt out (using jetcans or something) and then put you're cans down. --- CEO - Crimson Rebellion

Tractor your jetcan while orbiting the rocks you're mining. When your hauler comes along, release the tractor and your hauler can tractor the can to start vacuuming it into their GSCs in the cargo hold. Even better, randomly pick which of the rocks you're orbiting for the next 20 seconds so it's harder for can-flipper-wannabes to bookmark your can.
It's much harder for pirates to can flip when the can is moving, and any decently set up cruiser can have three lasers and a tractor running simultaneously :)

This really is one of the better ideas. Adding to the can belts is just freaking lame. There's not that many can flippers and ore thieves out there.
Giant secure cans while yes they do hold more than your average ship does they still do fill up fast and you'll still be making plenty of trips back to station. Jet can mining is far superior. Personally I mine with Cargo expanders on my barge. I get over 3 times the cargo space of a secure can with cargo expander 2's.

Shodan - now I know about 'Tactical Overview' I can start to use it, thanks.
Mordinn - moving is an option that's currently low down on the list.
Aaron - nice tip about moving a bookmark, thank you.
ceyriot - nice, that one had crossed my mind (sort of :) ).
Mara - you're thinking outside the box here, NICE, I like it, thank you.
Xykanth - yes, adding cans to the belts is a bit limp. I already use cargo expander II's on my barge.
And so folks, all the replies have given me some useful material to try and to experiment with. Thanks for your replies.
