Ok so, I loved the game STALKER, thought it was very well done and have been cruising the internet trying to find our more info on the release date for the new STALKER game, Clear Sky, when I stumbled on this Linkage. At first I started reading the wright up about this 1979 movie and thought this has nothing to do with the game, but then I started to notice a bunch of similarities. It seems to have everthing except Chyernoble.
So on to my main point though. Has anyone ever seen this and if so is it any good. Secondly does anyone know where I can find a copy?

Not seen it, but I understand it is a classic. Everything by Tarkovsky is solid win. Especially Solaris.
Look on Amazon for second-hand DVDs, make sure the region does not pose a problem though.

STALKER, both the movie and the game, are based on the novella "Roadside Picnic."
It is a very dark, eerie, and extremely good novella. You can find translated versions on the Internets by googling. Read it.

Be aware, that Tarkovsky is a very special filmmaker. While many people appreciate his work and find it among the best ever created, another group of people (including myself) find it very boring, long winded and above all excruciatingly difficult to watch. He uses overly long shots to depict very small things, and combined with the usual 3 hours running time and scenes that needs analyzing every single moment you find yourself exhausted quite fast.
Tarkovsky is hailed as film art and no doubt he is, I'm just saying that it's not for everyone. Actually it's for a very small audience.
Don't see this movie and expect anything that all to do with the original novella or the game. It has no action, no monsters, there is the fight for survival but not at all like you would expect it.

I saw the movie in black and white when I was a child and watched it again a year or two back on DVD. Read the book, played the game etc. The movie has almost no action in it, this must be pointed out. If you played the game then you know that the ultimate prize in the Zone is to have your wish fulfilled. Now this movie is about a particular stalker who's guiding others in the Zone to a place where it happens. The movie doesn't focus on the wishes or their fulfilment - so no thriller for you - though. It's basically about a conversation between these people as they approach their goal. You learn what they want from the Zone and why they want it. They also tell each other stories. They also cross some heavely abandod area as they do it --------------------------------------------- GET TO THE CHOPPA!!! The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. |

I confess to being a fan of Tarkovsky and world cinema in general.
To me, questions such as "What is desire?" and "What is identity?" explored through three hours of quiet contemplation are more interesting than watching Warsaw Pact weapons chew scenery in bullet time.
Thus I think it OK to insert long tracking shots of a 16th century landscape painting set to organ music into the middle of a science fiction movie. Not everyone agrees.
Also, I don't need the subtitles so nothing is lost in translation.
But that's just me. Yeah, I wouldn't expect action from Tarkovsky, just a different perspective on things.
