Edited by: T3IZM1N4L on 24/02/2008 17:03:36 I see alot of peope talk about having 4 or 5 tractor beams fitted on thier salvaging ships. I used to use one tractor beam along with 3 salvagers, but i figured i should buy another 3 tracotrs and have 4 tractors and 4 salvagers. Problem is you can only use one tractor beam on one wreck at a time. Im not sure if im missing something, but why would you need more than one tractor beam, if you can only use 1 on 1 wreck? Is there a way you can target other wrecks(while alrdy targeting a wreck), and use other tractors on them?

I'm no expert on salvaging given I've never bothered with it [stupid I know] but I'll say that yes, you can target more then one wreck [up to your max targets, same as anything] and can use the other beams on them :)

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 24/02/2008 17:10:04 It sounds like you may be ratting in the asteroid belts where sometimes you only get one NPC spawn. If you run missions you could have 10-20-30- or more wrecks to salvage so having 3 or 4 tractor beams are essential in speeding up the process.

You can lock more wrecks, same as you can lock more targets of any other kind. Max number of targets is limited by your skills (2 unskilled, increased by targeting skill) and your ship's max number of targets.

Lots of people use Destroyers as salvage boats, which can target up to seven targets at once (skills permitting). So you can be salvaging four ships while you drag the next three into salvage range. Or you can drag four ships behind you while you salvage them and move towards the next bunch of targets. As long as you're not going faster than about 300 m/s, you can even loot from a ship/container as you're tractoring it along.

Hmm, thanx for the help guys. For some reason i was never aware of this. Maybe i need to train my skill, because i cant target more than 2 wrecks. I was getting confused because i tried to pull in 2 different wrecks but i kept getting a msg saying i couldnt, maybe i wasnt selecting the new wreck or something, gonna try again.
Thanx again.

The targeting skill is great. This will allow +1 up to the max total allowed in the ships attributes. train electronics to 5 ASAP. Pick up signature analysis if you do not already have it.
Convo me in game if you have any questions.

Or for a Level 4 mission - you drag 3 wrecks and a loot can to the next group of wrecks.
Looting from a wreck is generally possible if you don't turn on AB. Salvage is possible if you don't turn on MWD. If you have an MWD turned on you need to watch the range. Tractors pull at 500m/s if you go faster, the items will eventually fall far enough behind to be out of range.

Fit an afterburner for extra speed, a cap recharger to help you keep cap and fill the lower slots with expanded cargoholds for extra space. Try to economize while salvaging. Often it is better to drag wrecks to you, stop the ship, turn off the tractor beams and start looting and salvaging. If you have 4 tractors and 4 salvagers on together the cap will go down fast. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Legion of Shadow is looking for recruits. There are two limits on how many targets you can have: the Targetting skill, and the ship. The skill gives you up to 2 + 5 = 7 targets total. Some ships (industrials, for example) are limited to 2 targets, others can handle 4-5, and others 7 or more, so it depends on the ship too.

This was probably your issue. When you have more than one target locked, only one of them is your 'active' target at any given time, and this is signified by the spinning white pointers around it (you'll know what I mean when you see it). Any new modules that get activated will get activated on this target. Additionally, when you lock a new target it won't automatically become active (which is actually a good thing so you don't end up shooting something you didn't want to!).
So if you locked a wreck, activated tractor beam 1, locked a second wreck, activated tractor beam 2 then you'd be trying to tractor the first wreck again. What you would need to do in this situation would be to click on the second wreck's icon to make that the active target, before activating your second tractor beam. Once you do this all should be well.
And when you train up a few levels of Targeting you can expand this idea to work with even more wrecks.

Seeing as this is a great 'tractor beam information' thread, I'll throw in my question as well:
Can you tractor other people's wrecks and/or cans, or just ones that are owned by you?
I ask, because I'd like to get into a gang/fleet with a bunch of non-corpmates, and would like to clean up the cans and salvage the wrecks as they kill everything in missions and plexes. When I ganged last night, I noticed that some of the cans and wrecks were yellow, presumably because others had been there previously to us.

You can tractor corpmates' or gang members' wrecks as though they are your own. It's possible that a gang member's wreck may show-up as yellow on your overview (that I don't really know).
Anything else, and you will get a warning message.
Once, I was salvaging for a mission-runner. He destroyed all the targets, then left our gang (of two) and scooted. I proceeded to get warning messages every time I tried to tractor one of his wrecks. It was annoying.
