Hi, I have used cloaking for a long time without any problems. This afternoon I jumped to a gate where a lot of pirates were camping, so I cloaked immediatelly and started making my way away from the gate, slowly but surely. All of a sudden, my ship uncloaked and I got fired upon and destroyed. My capacitor was full at around 98%. Does anybody know what could have happened? I did not click or touch anything, it just uncloaked after about 20 seconds of cloaking. Thank you

The cloaking device automatically deactivates whenever a ship or any object is at 2km or less from you, or when you are hit by a smartbomb.
That said, any campers that see a ship cloaking will immediatly go to the last known position of the target to forcibly uncloak him, so unless you are in fast ship that can MWD + cloak, the chances of you escaping from this situation is not very good. It can however buy you the time to align if it is not a bubble.

I understand, but I find this rather ridiculous. This is mentioned nowhere, I had to find out by experience and lost most of what I had as I was transporting expensive merchandise. I wish CCP would explain this in the cloaking device description.
Thanks for your answer.

I actually came up with a fit that allows you to do over 1 km/s cloaked, and about 4 km/s uncloaked, with a MWD running indefinitely. Unfortunately, it only works on an interceptor, and your firepower kinda goes to hell, as does any tanking ability besides speed.

I also read that some gate campers will intensify their attempts to decloak a ship like yours in that situation with the use of drones to get within that 2K range. A swarm of drones cover quite a bit more search area in their bid to find you.
Be careful out there. I feel your pain.
As well I can presume you know the little trick to get away from your last known position before cloaking is to first give yourself a Burst of MWD to get up some fast coasting speed before engaging your cloak.

Maybe you should read up on the stats of the cloaking device. The ship won't go 1Km/s cloaked. Afaik the only ships that move full speed (or faster) while cloaked are covert ops, stealth bombers, recons and black-ops.
One thing you could do tho is to activate the mwd and then cloak, gives you a short speed burst before the mwd deactivates.
Either you are for or against us, there simply is no other way |

Thats right your MWD will run for a full cycle after you hit your cloak. So double click ahead of your ship...Alt-F1 then F1 straight away...
should get you out of trouble pretty quickly, especially if you fit for speed in your lows.

The only ships that can go full speed or faster while cloaked are the stealth bombers and the black ops. All other ships have a penalty to speed while cloaked (the combat recons don't even have a bonus for cloaking devices).

I'm sorry man, I gotta speak up to this, as a pvp cloaker for a LONG time.
The 2,000m rule is a good, sound one. Otherwise that cloak would be WAY overpowered. As it is covops cloaks (which I LOVE) are damned easy to use and give you a decided advantage in that you can choose the terms of your engagements. Allowing for a decloaking option by way of proximity is a GOOD thing for cloaks because it keeps you on your toes. Otherwise you don't have to interact with other players at all except entirely on your own terms.
I understand that comes as little consolation for someone who had to interact with other players while hauling goods. But it is an MMO and interaction is the name of hte game. If, once you hit the cloak button, you just stayed cloaked until you turned it off don't you think that would be grossly unbalanced? Even just a little?

Sometimes the mouse gets the cheese, sometimes the mouse gets caught.
Smartbombs alone will not uncloak you, but smartbombing range is very close to the uncloaking range.
Take it on the chin, use a scout. Im the girl momma warned you about..
