Are there no free form flying controls? Or is it just approach, orbit, keep at range, double click here to fly in that direction? Just curious.

You have pretty much covered your options.
There are no joystick style flight controls in this game.

for some reason people think having another control method would make this a twitch game.
so sadly all you can do is double click in space :/

see here comes one now. please name one rts with double click as a method of movement. please. maybe if eve let you select our ship and then click to move, or mouse free movement. you know like in an rts where the characters follow your mouse actively.
because you know having wasd in WoW instead of only point and click makes wow an fps

I think that if you added free form flying you'd have to set some specific limits on it. Such as still only being able to orbit, keep at range, etc. Otherwise you'd find people flying around trying to act like they are in fighter jets rather than large and hard to manuever ships.
I can just see it now..someone "bunny hopping" their frieghter to avoid getting shot!

dont ask me why, but I'm really trying to imagine Darth Vader, on the command bridge of the SSD, seated with a joystick in his hand screaming " TURN LEFT, TURN LEFT, DAMMIT!!!! "

Or a Maelstrom dogfighting between asteroids like Millenium Falcon.
What's the point of holding the joystick full to the right when it takes you 30 seconds to turn?

Edited by: Qutan on 29/02/2008 08:25:06 In the old days of frontier elite and elite there was a realistic space flight control system , hard to master but great fun when you got it.Frontier elite also had atmospheric flight when you got that right it was a joy to play, arhh the old days .
Well not everyone liked it many complained about how awful it was I think they were the majority and so it would be more so today, in the age of plug and play and PS 3 etc Eve as a game would fail if it had that difficulty level and long learning curve yeah some think eve as it stands is very hard to master but a true to life space flight sim would kill eve in the form it is today .
Dont get me wrong I love eve its not perfect and needs to evolve if it did have realistic space flight I would still play but the majority would not sadly .
Now where can I get a copy of Frontier Elite and will it work on Vista ?
Not a pirate I just love the

There is no free-flight, unfortunately. They probably won't add it, either; there have been requests for supporting free-flight (mouse or joystick) in the past and the devs haven't added it yet, so they probably won't.
The point-and-click has the advantage of sending less spam to the server; free-flight would have to send your mouse or joystick movements constantly, which is a lot of communication. But that's beside the point; they designed the game like this, and all ships have turrets specifically so you don't need to aim the ship, and I guess that's what the devs want to support for the game.

There's also the fact that we're not dealing with small fighters here. Even the frigates are (if I am not mistaken) rather damn huge ships with large crews. More like modern-day aircraftcarriers than jetboats.

This game is great, but it would be unbelievable if they would have made the interface a*****pit one like Privateer. Man, that would be soooo hawt!
Btw, doubleclick movement sucks.

Eh, it wouldn't be that great. You can sit in your cocpit looking forward, and meanwhile your target is behind you and your turrets are shooting rear-ward... what's the point of the cocpit? We really do need that free-form rotating camera to function properly in this game.

The main thing with this game is that in operating the ship, you are acting the part of the commander, not the pilot. You give the directions and the "crew" carries them out.
Besides, could you imagine the blind spot in a bs while trying to fps See you in my sights!

The reason they don't do it is because it would create an ungodly amount of lag.
It's bad enough as it is, without 20 updates a second coming from each client giving new velocities, directions etc. -- Ralara / Ralarina |

This.
And before anyone starts in with the 'well xxx game is a multiplayer game with ship controls'... EVE is the only game I know of where you can have massive fleet battles w/out undue amounts of lag.
(Yes I know that alliances are finding the lag cap all the time, but the size of even the smaller fleet battles is fairly impressive considering the number of ships/drones/etc on the same grid.) -=^=-

I understand the need to avoid free flight but they could at least give us a <right click> -> <move here> option because the double clicking doesn't even register half the time and there's no way to change the sensitivity in the menu.
