I've just started using a Mammoth for my indy needs, and I like the 100MW grid I get with engineering 5.
What I'm thinking about is to boost the shields a bit for pick-up runs in low sec empire. I've thought about putting the following on the mid-slots:
1x Medium Shield Extender 1x Medium Shield Booster 2x Shield hardener (depending on the local flavor of npc)
Would that be a useful set-up, or should I leave this design on the drawing board and keep the ABs on it?

low sec traveling = full warp core stab in low and your proposed shield setup in medium slot.
afterburner won't give you a really efficient boost to escape foes.
think about a small smartbomb to explode incoming missile (if you can fit one).
well, just my opinion...

Thing is that I've never seen a player pirate in the .3-.4 systems where I usually do my few hours of mining, so the only challenge is to be able to pick up the ores before the 15K frigates manage to do too much damage.

Me and my friends were doing a mining op in 0.1 yesterday. I was defending and a guy in a Mammoth was hauling. I noticed him being very slow, so I asked him why he didn't use afterburners. He said he had shield tanked the Mammoth to his best ability. Later that night he warps in to do an ore pickup at about the same moment that a pirate spawn warps in - all around him. He fires up his shield-things and manages to warp out - with some armour damage though. If he hadn't be tanked like that he would have lost the whole ship and not just a chunk of it's armour, so I say that tanking a Mammoth is well worth it.

My tanked out badger is great...i took 9 cruise hits with this config and lived to tell the tale.
Mid Slots 1 Kinetic, 1 Explosive, 1 Thermal Hardner (choose appropriate types for your local NPC) 1 Med Shield Booster 1 Med Cap Battery 1 Cap Recharger
Low Slots 1 power Diagnostic 1 Cap Relay 1 Overdrive

Then you're lucky, interceptors are great for killing indies right under the noses of BS protection.
If you're using a mammoth train up spaceship command and evasive maneuvring to lvl 5, bookmark the can/cans, you will warp out again so fast it's quite amazing. a high lvl of hull upgrades and mechanic helps, shields on a mammoth are paper thin, at best. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Already have Evasive Manuevering 5. Had to get myself an interceptor. I agree that it makes moving a big indy around quite a bit easier. The only problem is when you get close to a roid and the thing when you almost get stuck happens.
And I could also estimate what my Taranis loaded with blasters could do to a poor Mammaoth.

Or just outrun them by fitting an MWD. Just about possible on a Mammoth I believe, though you have nothing left to spare, requires 3 Micro auxilliary power units, and 1 RCU. Never tested it myself but I am told it works.

the problem with MWD on a mammoth is that it has one of the smallest caps for an indy (350, where Bestower I believe is 450 and Iteron 5 550 ?) by the time you've taken the MWD penalty into acount, even with skills you manage all of about 2 ticks of boost before the cap is drained - and you only make it up to about 70%? of the theoretical max speed even with the full agility (not that agility seems to effect acceleration/much since TomB nerfed it mind) er anyway back to helpfull suggestions ;)
you might want to look into a Small shield booster II rather than a medium shield booster I - since it recharges 50% more shield for the cap used (which is going to be a tricky thing to manage on a mammoth) and will free up that bit more grid for other things (like the aforementioned smartbomb) hopefully not tooo hard/expensive to buy now either :) . ----- Apologys for any rambling that may have just occurred.

Edited by: Space Angel on 05/04/2004 19:21:22 I just send in a wreathe to scoot in grab the ore and get out fast they can maneuver around asteroids farily well and I instant jump to the pickup point unload into the mother ship ,Iteron 5 or Mammoth and return for more that way I dont loose a whole indy of ore and wreathes are fairly cheap

My attempt to "tank" my Mammoth went roughly as follows,
2 x Small Smartbombs (missile defence)
2 x 10MN ABs 1 x Small Named Shield Booster 2 x Shield Hardners (EM & Thermal)
2 x Power Diags 2 x Cap Relays
Never really tested it out against a difficult spawn but I've found from testing that I can run the smartbombs (not near the can) and hardners on autorepeat indefinetly and still have some cap left to boost the shields a bit if needed. On the spawns I have come across while doing pickups the protection has easily given me time to get the ore and warp out without even being in any real danger. With small rats I let them get close then smarbomb them to death just for fun! Ravelin Eb
