I would like to know if I can get a sound card that will let me connect speakers and my headset to at the same time.
What I want to do is have music (mp3, online radio etc) playing through the speakers while I have the game sound effects and vent through the headset, probably configurable through some neat little gui in the task bar is what I'm thinking.
Is that something that modern sound cards such as this would let me do? (maybe they all do now and I'm just completely out of touch....)
I'd rather not spend a fortune, I'm not a musician and I don't need extra boxes of sound controls to fit in to a hard drive bay or anything
Recommendations much appreciated. I'm UK based so ebuyer would be my preferred place to buy.

Drop some splitters between the required connectors? That way you should easily be able to connect both at the same time.

If you have built-in sound on your motherboard it's pretty simple to get vent going through that and other sound through a "real" sound card. I would guess that you could set the game effects to either as well.
Presumably this would work just as well using 2 real sound cards.
As for one sound card, well I've no idea really but my gut feeling is no, you would need some sort of "dual core sound card". -

Do i what do.
USB Headset Cable Speakers
Windows allows you to change between them easy
Teamspeak is even easier.
Better Part - WinAmp even has a option for which output device.
So i have my headset as my default device, but anything in winamp comes out speakers _________________________________________________________ My Second EvE Video Club Seals Not Sandwichs

Its possible, but not easy. You'll need two soundcards, and manually set which sound events will be rendered on which. programs like vent/ts are easy to do this on, but you're going to have to really dig to change which card the os/browser/mp plays things on.
Most games should be pretty easy to configure, but older ones or lazily programed ones might get confused.

Edited by: AndrewRyan on 29/02/2008 22:37:36 Most sounds card have front panel connectors, Just disconnect the front panel from the mainboard sound input/output sockets and plug them into the sound card ones. If you have a OEM soldered type setup or no front sockets it could be more difficult. Some sound cards also have multi purpose external inputs and outputs and you adjust the properties of each via the driver (I know the Creative X-Fi series has this).

Edited by: Sitara on 29/02/2008 22:39:14 My solution to this is have 2 soundcards installed - means I can listen to game sounds / music on the big speakers and have the headset just for voice at the same time.
And changing cards is easy - set the windows default one to the speakers and go into TS/Vent and tell it to use the other one (both have this in settings).
Other programs just tend to use the windows default one *when they start* so just switch inbetween starting 2 programs that don't have the setting option.

Convinced me that it wasn't viable on one sound card. Also reminded me that I had a USB sound card knocking around, so now have it setup with eve/vent through the headset via the usb and other stuff though speakers via the onboard (crappy soundmax) sound card
