Forgive me if this has been asked before, the search engines I've tried have not been much help.
What I was wondering is if people use cloaking devices + long range weaponry to easily do missions.
1. Warp in Cloaked 2. Move to maximum range of your weapons but out of range of theirs 3. Engage from long range 4. Once the enemy closes the distance on you and begins to return fire - warp out 5. Repeat
This seems like a easy, but perhaps slow way, to complete missions.
Is this doable? |

ofcourse it is. but i doubt anyone is doing this. it will take forever to do a mission this way. if you can't tank it, then maybe you should consider lower lvl missions? |

well I assumed this approach would allow you to complete missions you wouldnt normally be able to, being able to whittle down enemies from afar with little to no retaliation |

Only a few ship types will be able to actually warp-in while cloaked and none of them are great for running high level missions. some are do-able, but they're not great.
If you're talking about putting a cloak on a normal mission running ship then you face a number of problems. You will be warping in uncloaked, and it's possible for some mission frigs to get a lock on you quickly and prevent you cloaking. Many missions also have objects or gas clouds near the warp-in point, or even just the beacon, that will stop you from cloaking immediately. Then it's gonna take you forever to get to sniper / kiting range because you will move very very slowly using one of those cloaks.
When I was a wee babe and trying lvl4s with my first hurricane, i relied on propulsion mods (afternurners or microwarpdrives) for this sort of situation and would burn my dismal-DPS artie hurricane out of range and then kite them forever. drones kill the little fellows that caught me and the remainder slowly fell to the artilery. Whatever you're flying you should be able to take a similar approach ... tank, prop mod, and long-range weapons.
Good luck.

Won't the beacons where you warp into decloak you half of the time? Also, often you can just use your none cloak ship, warp to the mission, abort and then warp to 100km, then you can snipe. |

Yes, a Tengu with the covert reconfiguration subsystem totally sucks at high-level missions, because it loses one launcher slot and a good chunk of its damage bonuses.
Also, the Tengu is fast enough to dictate range in missions anyway. No need for cloaking. |

lol. I was being sarcastic. They work OK with the Cloak subsystem......but why does this guy even want to warp in cloaked ??
Just another mystery thread really upon further thought...................

Because it sounds like a cool thing to do until you find out that the games mechanics make it suck.

Perhaps more an issue of wanting to self-bignote than anything else.
I commented that covops ships are not great at running high level missions. I stick by that, because it is entirely true. A 5HML tengu can complete many high level missions, hell I use one in my nullsec bearing, but no way is it 'great' for that role.
Responder makes an eye rolling response, misrepresenting my reply as suggesting tengu suck in that role so he can sarcastically provide his uber-insight. Do'oh!
When called to task responder completely agrees with my earlier premise ... "They work OK".
Here we go around in a complete circle, with the sarcastic reply offering nothing except a bit of manual self gratification for krix. Oh well, it is an eve forum I guess :-)
OP, I think the main replies here should steer you to something along the lines of: Yeah it can sort of be done, but there are other ways to approach your problem that may be better.

I actually did play around with this a while back, it was a way (notice I did not say 'good' way) to handle missions that were outside my skill range.
In terms of ISK/hour, it sucks. In terms of 'hey, this is harder mission then I could normally do!' it can work. It is very, very slow but it can allow one to set up for kiting when normally they would get melted rather quickly.
I kinda wish this worked better. EvE is a game where, when it comes to PvE, one tends to optimize for ISK/hour as quickly as one can, and doing things a 'fun' way results in lower returns. |

Absolutely! I think we've all done it, or thought about doing it. In similar situation I was spending two hours in a hurricane inside AE4 bonus room ... just so I could say I completed it in a hurricane. Still, there was nothign laregr I could fly at the time anyways. We can build and sell pretty much every ship. Check my bio for details. I entirely agree with Substantia Nigra that running missions in cloaked ships is sub-optimal. However it can be highly entertaining and not so bad isk wise if:
1) You go out to nullsec to run your missions (much much better mission payout) 2) You use your fight-and-evade skills to run other sites in null.
Neither of those is perfect, nor am I convinced they will hit the ISK/hour that plain old highsec lvl 4 missions would. However both can be a lot more entertaining, and every now and then highly rewarding after a while.
Knowing how to handle a ship in a sub-optimal configuration is not a bad thing at all. |

Why the cloak?
Warp in (assuming theres no gate to go through first) at 100, shoot, warp out. No need for a cloak.
God knows why you would want to do that. I'd be faster money making and less tedious just to do lower level missions or, God forbid, mine till you get ur tank up to decent. This wont probably take more than a week.
Or I just got trolled.
2. Move to maximum range of your weapons but out of range of theirs <--- NPC ships, other than frigs have obscene range so thats a no. |
