Next match you watch mute the sound and try to commentate yourself for up to 15minutes remembering to make sure you get all your facts right AND be entertaining. Its a lot easier to criticize then actually do it yourself.

Could I just punctuate this thread by saying to the OP:
SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!
I can't believe I wasted 20 seconds of my life reading your drivel. To be dissatisfied with the show is one thing, just switch off. But to go on the forums, click on this section and then click new topic is a waste of your time my time and everyone else who read your post.

*The following comment is being made by someone who knows nothing about the teams in the tourny and thus views them as all equally talented*
The only "complaint" that I have so far is the lack of interest the crew is showing towards the new groups coming into the tourny as compared to those teams who have some experience fighting in them.
Case in point, Etheral Dawn's post fight commentary on Day 3. Instead of talking about what the two teams could have done or were doing or adding to what we had just seen, the commentators decided to talk about how badly MC and PL were doing within the group. Talk about how badly they are doing after they lose a match, that is what that time is slotted for.
Or, and this is just a suggestion perhaps(?), how about a daily wrap-up of what went on and how the teams are doing (sort of like a SportCenter broadcast)? This would give you all ample time to talk about how the "good" teams are doing so horribly in their respected brackets.
Other then that, I am fully enjoying this tourny and the broadcast thus far. LORD knows they know a heck of a lot more then I do and are much better looking then I.

I freely admit I couldn't do a better job. Look, you don't have to be a world class chef to be a food critic.
I wish they'd back up their comments with some sort of explination. One of them mentioned "Dual logistic setups aren't very sexy" and then leaves it at that. Why isn't it sexy? What would be sexy to you? Should the setup be banned? I don't care what your opinion is, just have one and back it up. Don't make arbitrary statements like "This team stinks" and leave it at that.

Quote: We do have a professional production crew. Also we have some interns from a University. The production value is very high. I don't understand what you're comparing us to that we don't stand up to.
May I suggest you check out podcasts being put out by EA/Mythic for Warhammer Online. http://www.warhammeronline.com/english/media/video/ Granted they get weeks to setup their productions, and you're pretty much doing it on the spot. Check out their enthusiasm though! You guys seem like you're ready for a nap. I would actually be delighted if two of your commentators argued about a match a debated their opinions about it. Then we could debate that on the forums, and some of us might actually learn something about the game. The forums contain more posts discussing you and your production rather than the commentary, points and opinions you bring to the table. Why do you think that is?
Quote: The only "complaint" that I have so far is the lack of interest the crew is showing towards the new groups coming into the tourny as compared to those teams who have some experience fighting in them.
The crew pretty much shows a lack of interest in anything. If I was considering purchasing an EVE account, I certainly wouldn't be motivated after watching the EVEtv coverage. Nor am I motivated to particapate in the tourny. It looks like a pain in the ass for the players than actual fun.

To be fair mate, if you or I or anyone else was considering purchasing an Eve account we'd be too busy drooling over Trinity graphics than listening to the commentary.

My only criticism at this point would be for the commentators to withhold judgment on setups they don't understand until they think about it a little harder. I usually find that most competitors had a relatively good idea, even if their setup failed miserably because they lost the rock/paper/scissor draw.
This is especially apparent when the team is relatively unknown. Its usually decided that their setup sucks without trying to figure out what their actual plan was. As somebody who has spent considerable time planning for the tourney, I see a lot of the failed setups and know what they were trying to do because we tested it at some point.
Also, I think given the flavor of the tourney, the commentary would be a lot more interesting if the announcers worked a little bit harder to explain to the audience what exactly is going on between ships that are supporting each other. I know that both of our slow and boring matches were actually fierce battles of logistic micro-management that goes completely unnoticed by the casual viewer.

Edited by: Ituralde on 03/03/2008 18:54:23 I say we have a great group of commentators and props to them for taking time out of their schedules to not only bring us this service on the tourney but to also happily put them in a position for all of us to flame and smack them for the better part of two weeks straight.
Keep up the good work everyone.

Really enoying the tourney so far, better than last years. Best bit is seeing how nervous poor Edzz gets when KIA are playing, was actually nervous for him before that last match. Best bit was the look on his face when he saw those 9 Thorax'es release HammerHead Drones as opposed to Medium ECM's.
I'm experienced enough to know whats going on 99% of the time in the fights and that what looks boring to us is anything but for the players competing.

Suggestions for better commentating - While you are not on camera try to watch the screens instead of watching each other when you talk. It might feel odd at first but you'll get used to is. The reason is sometimes you miss very important events, like the destruction of an important ship and it is obvious to us that you aren't watching the screens. - Give the commentators control of a camera (that we don't see) to enable them to look for information without always asking the cameraman to do it. Although the cameraman is still very important, it allows the commentators to have a better understanding of the fight.
Other than that I have no real complaints, the tournament as a whole is very fun to watch. You guys have done a great job this time round and I really like the new technical add-ons, like the instant playback and being able to see both the fight and studio at the same time.

So far I've participated in two fights, and the commentators just got a lot of stuff strictly wrong in both, so I'm not sure what to think. I enjoy the commentary, but I wonder if it's only because I can't see all their mistakes the rest of the time.

To me, the main purpose of watching the games is to have a glimpse of the world of ship setup/strategy/tactics in high-end pvp. In most cases I had no idea what each team's plan was or how they were executing it. It seemed to me that the commentators didn't have much idea either.
The production seemed fine, but to make the whole affair interesting enough to watch, I would need to know a lot more about how the ships are fitted and what their pilots are doing.

honestly, the guys are doing a great job.
I think the commentary reflects the game style, its not an RTS where you turn up and fight. There are only so many strategies in an RTS game and there are a hell of a lot less factors to factor in. Eve requires strategy, particularly in tournaments. The micromanagement that goes on to keep a logistics setup going is amazing and whilst it is relatively boring to watch (much like paint drying) it would be nice to hear a bit of commentary / speculation on what goes wrong when it does in these sort of matches.
Tournament production has been excellent. Yes there were issues on day one but tbh, the synch has been good and the cuts etc between sections have been smooth.
I quite like the way the studio team are very much themselves. I like the way that they don't try to take the game too seriously. I also like the fact that they've toned down (just slightly) the in jokes which were getting a touch old last time (but hey, thats just how we role :P)
I've never run a TV production live, i've only run conferences / formal balls and I can say that the amount of flak people give over the little things whilst ignoring the ridiculously large amount of work that they're not noticing because it was all done right is ********. Thankfully, there are a fair few people out there that actually do give credit where credit is due which is why i'd gladly still bother to run events even with the flak you always get no matter how good it is.
Eve-TV do a good job. The tournament may well not be perfect but they do a good job and they are producing something that is of a good quality that is both amusing and relatively informative. The content has nods at both veterans and noobs alike and to top it off it is amusing to boot. Is it everyone's cup of tea? I doubt it. Does it sit well with the majority of Eve players that might watch the tourny / tell their friends to and to those people that might enjoy the game if they were to take it up? I think yes and thats why i'll call this a success.

Saying "if you don't like it turn it off" is not a valid response. There is such a thing as VALID CRITICISM. That said, the OP is off the mark. I'll give a bulletized overview:
- Guests on Fri / Sun were great. Eddz was pretty funny, and they all seemed knowledgeable. - Guests on Sat were TERRIBLE!! - Host Spiral was generally good, and I don't mind the attire, but there were a couple egregious blunders... in one fight, blue team lost like 3 ships, afterward he said "they didn't lose any ships, right?" But hosting is more than being 100% accurate, and overall he did a good job. - There is far too much time for BSing between short matches. I wonder if there is a way to get around the set start-times? If not, find some way to fill time other than random topics off the top of your head. If they gave you some kind of replay / analysis tools to look at previous matches (even from past tourneys) that could work well. - Stevie is HOT.
