Well, some background: I love flight simulators. I play IL-2. I play LO:MAC FC. I own a never used original copy of Falcon 3.0. I played Knights of the Sky on the Amiga 500 for untold hours and I loathed the horrible Operation Overlord on the same machine.
Last night I finally got around to installing LOMAC FC on my Vista laptop, which is my current gaming machine. The old standard desktop boxen just doesn't cut it. So, I have some fun making a few basic missions to re-aquaint myself with the game and how the planes work and everything is good.
Of course, the game isn't (really) made for Vista. After a few hours it gives me a total freezeup, after which Vista doesn't acknowledge the existance of my trusty old Sidewinder 2 joystick. I check the ports with other peripherals and do all kinds of maneuvers and eventually get to the conclusion that the 5 years old stick just gave up and died.
Not having that, I head into town and end up walking through ALL five stores having gaming equipment to find something that isn't a **** 30 euro logitech stick and get that Saitek Cyborg Evo Force I had always been looking at, get home (with more than a few Guiness in my belly, just ask my alliancemates and corpmates how that goes) and hook everything up.
The joystick still doesn't exist. The mouse and everything else still works on the same port. I try various games for the same examination - it doesn't exist. I check hardware manager, peripherals manager, everything. It's not there.
How the heck does my computer know it's a joystick and therefore doesn't exist? After a few hours of swearing and further alcohol consumption, I do a windows restore. The joystick doesn't exist. What in the name of Oveurs panties?
That's when it hits me. I didn't have the joystick power chord connected. Ever.
So, thoroughly humiliated by bystanders, and way too inebriated to accept this fail: please please please tell me there's someone out there that's done something similarly stupid.
Please?

You sure it's the type of "joystick" that plugs into the computer? ____________________ GM Sunshine > oops Neurotica > Hate to see a GM in your gang say 'oops'

I own a Saitek Cyborg Evo myself, though I've never heard of this kind of problem. Mind you, I'm not using Vista so I wouldn't really know.
Though I admire your choice in Flightsims. IL-2 Sturmovik is perfection itself

Well if you thought it was connected it's close enough. You should've broken the joystick then get ****ed a bit more and break the computer. Then find out that your joystick wasn't connected.

You made the huge step of isolating the root of the problem.
Now you have to take steps to eliminate it.

Dude, don't worry, I have plans. There shall be shrimps for harvesting and too much alcohol for underage readers.
EDIT: Also, for added bonus, all those training missions I scetched up for myself went corrupt through the windows restore and have to be re-done.
Thankyou God.

Pulled a prank on my roomate last year.
Removed all his icon's from his desktop, clicked "hide toolbar", made a solid black background in paint. set it as his wallpaper. Then turned off his screensaver. unplugged his mouse and keyboard.
Convinced him he had a virus (because nothing would work, and all it would show was a black screen after boot-up)
Fun times.

Had my share of "Doh!" moments working with PCs.
Probably the "worst" was trying to trouble shoot a printer that would not print. In my defense the second thing I did (after making sure it was turned on and yeah...had people complain of busted equipment that merely was powered off) was to peek behind the computer to see that the cable was plugged in. The computer was in an inconvenient spot so took some contortionist moves to do even that much but I saw the cable running to the PC (this is back when they used serial cables).
So I spend the next 3+ hours trying everything I can think of to make the machine work. It worked when I plugged it in to my laptop (I used another cable and just unplugged the data cable at the printer) but not for the PC. This was Windows NT so I was dorking around removing ports and trying to get them back and any number of things I could possibly think of.
Finally I decide to try my cable (I just never get my head around the notion that a cable could "break" so didn't go there sooner) and reach behind the machine to get the old one only to find the original cable was pulled out of the plug on the PC by maybe a centimeter. Enough to not work but still in enough to look like it was plugged in from a cursory glance.
So, gave it a little shove back into the socket and voila! Worked!
I let the client think it was some deep, dark, mysterious PC thing that only a genius like myself could have worked out so she was very grateful to have me there.
So stupid but a lesson I never forgot. Always, always, always try the easy and "obvious" fixes first. 90% of the time that'll sort whatever it is for you.

Sort of reminds me of when my old PC was having dodgy bootups and constantly rebooting. I thought I had a defect cable, so replaced that.. 3 times. Some worked better than others (seemingly) but all had the problem. I then tried a multitude of other things before finally buying a new Power Supply, going to plug it in only to find the ATX connector had somehow loosened and was only half-stuck in my motherboard. Plugged it back in and it worked fine. How it got like that I don't know

I think this goes well here. Ive noticed that 99.9% of people on these forums have a signature. If you are one of the 0.1% that doesnot have a sig, copy this into your sig, and display your defiance towards people with sigs. |

A phrase that I picked up from my dad...
When you're working by yourself on some project, all work done by you with no helpers in sight. There sometimes comes a moment when you stop and realize: "I'm working with an idiot." _______________________________

Thats nothing.
Was taking cover off my pc to replace the graphics card.
Now, everrything is smooth. I boot her up, install drivers, and do a nze reboot to make sure all is sane.
While it's off, I couldn't help bu tnotice something was wrong with the way she booted. Few seconds later, I't clicked. I had no sound.
2 Hours of Swearing, cursing and Crap thrown this way and that, I glance over to my left at the sound controler. I noitced the little green light was not on, and the switch in the OFF position.
I gpaed for a few, thinking" I did'n t jsut do that" I flciked the switch, and music blares the entire house.
Your not alone mate, I don't think were cut for htis word... >.<
