Edited by: Lars Lodar on 06/03/2008 11:54:49 So I'm training to do some exploration soon. I heard that some sites despawn if you warp out. Is that correct?
Because I was thinking of finding Hacking sites in my Buzzard, clearing the rats in my drake, then coming back in my buzzard to hack the cans.
Is that possible? Same question goes for arch/sal sites.
Thanks.

Not possible in the way you mentioned. You can use a buzzard to find the site and bookmark it, dont shoot something and dont try to hack something. Then return in a drake to kill the rats there. I'm not exactly sure about the despawn-trigger. But i think killing the rats might cause the despawn. So simply fit a codebreaker to your Drake and hack the cans after you killed the rats. Normally you wont need a drake for that, at least not in high sec and low sec. An AF will do fine.

Thanks for the prompt replay.
That would suck to clear a room and come back to see it disappear.

Once found, the profession sites normally only despawn once two things have happened:
- At least one profession can has been accessed (I don't actually know if it requires a success, or if just the attempt is enough.)
- All players have left the site
I have heard that sometimes they don't follow these rules, but I think those are just rare bugs.
By the way, a lot of people find it both easier and safer to use their clearing ship for accessing cans. Saves you a trip if you can do it, and preserves your flimsy CovOps from some can traps and spawns. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

This has not been the case with me. I locate the site with a Buzzard. I return and get a tanked osprey and go back....get over the can...line up to warp out and hack the can. I then warp out...go get my very poorly fitted raven (cause i have terrible combat skills) go back and kill the rats...get my Osprey for round two.
I do this for all six cans and then get by Buzzard back to work.
I have also located sites that are partially done...loot them and move on.
Have not had a single one despawn on me and this is all i do everyday is salvage and explore...no pvp or pve for me. Originally by: GM Faolchu It is within the rules of the game for someone to enter your mission and steal the loot/salvage.

Hmmmm...Interesting.
Looks like there is some conflicting information about sites despawning. Since I will be doing this strictly withing the confines of low sec, I'm sure my drake should be able to handle the rats and profession needs with the same setup.

If Commander OTG is certain that this is happening with Profession sites, then something has definitely changed. When I get some motivation, I'll test it and see. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

I've probed a site down bm'd it, logged off and come back nearly 24 hours later and site was still there. I wouldn't worry about them disappearing tbh... just run them the way you want without regard to that aspect, I bet you don't have any issues.

I believe that these sites (bookmarks) are also being sold on the exploration channel. I could hardly believe that a person will sit in the site until it sells.
I will point out that I have not done any exploration in 0.0 for quite a while so not sure if it is different there or not.

Just to be perfectly clear, I was not saying that entering and leaving a site caused it to despawn, but that accessing a profession can and leaving did. So none of the quoted information contradicts that.
Commander OTG, your first post is the one that would make me think this has changed, since you describe entering a site, accessing cans, leaving and coming back.

sorry for the mislead. But I can confirm that the site is not despawning. I perform the task in the order that i mentioned above.
I did this as late as yesterday near Perimeter area (couple jumps away). It was a point 4 system and I would run back to my safe spot every time i got a hit on my scanner. nd yes I run my scanner even in jita...lol

I found a hidden asteroid field, and bookmarked it. Came back a few hours later, and mined a couple asteroids with some friends (this was a field with ~70 asteroids). An hour later I went back there (field was still there) and mined a little on my own as I was a few minerals short for something I needed.
I went back to check on the field the next day (~12 hours later, with 1 hour of downtime in there) and the whole field was gone. I think it's more likely that it despawned versus being mined out -- unless someone else tracked down the site very soon after I left and immediately got a mining gang on it, there should have been at least some left. Even with a decent sized gang, 70 asteroids take a long time, and it seems unlikely someone showed up at just that time.

Edited by: Vladmir Loki on 10/03/2008 07:02:24 The despawn timing, like everything else in Exploration, is random. But, as pointed out above, if you enter a site (Radar or Mag) and either engage ANY NPC or lock a can, the site will not be there when you come back. This, of course, is not 100% of the time, but in the few times I did leave, only one time did I come back to the site still there.
This does not apply to Grav belts. Grav belts will stay there until they are mined out. I have also seen them despawn after seven days, regardless of what is in the belt.
The best bet when it comes to Radar and Mag sites is to fly in cloaked in your Buzzard and take a look. Usually I'll fly in at 100km, just to be safe that you don't get too close to something that can decloak you. When you've entered the site, you can take a look around. See how many cans there are, what the NPCs look like, and you can go back to the system map and see what the site is named (IE Guristas Profession Base 1).
Now, if I weren't so lazy, I'd go find the dev blog that mentioned the timing of despawns for untouched Radar/Mag sites. They stated that if the site hasn't been touched, it will despawn after three days have passed. So you can BM the site, log off and come back later to it. I've done this several times. The only thing that will despawn the site is if another player probes it out and clears it while you're off.
Keep in mind that in my experience, all of these "rules" that are giving to us by the Devs are never solid. I've seen strange stuff happen, and when I contacted people about it, the only answer given was: "Theres a lot of randomness to Exploration".
edit: confused Grav with Radar.

Had a very annoying disconnection the other day after having just cleared all the rats from a radar plex, and hacked the first can. Following logging back in, bye bye plex. Curse my ISP.

Find the site in the cov-ops, clear the site with the Drake and add a codebraker.
Couple of reasons why you should:
1. You can't open can with enemies alive 2. Enemies re-spawn quickly, and usually new ones spawn after opening a can.
In Empire space 0.1-1.0 a Drake clears radar/mageto site easily, and handles the spawns without the need of the extra mid slot. Never seen anything bigger than BC's.
I sometimes use a BS with short range pulses on. I also put a couple of WCS in low's, allows me to fight close range (use drones at longer ranges), and allows me to escape if I get scanned down by pirates.

I did a RADAR site with multiple NPC battleships the other day ... it was in a 0.5 system, too. And for the kicker: the contents of the cans was abyssmal.
In other words: AFs don't always cut it IMO. Happiness is a warm gun, Mawma! |
