There are a group of us that have come from another MMOG that are running as a pack doing level 3 missions in low sec.
We're happy to get shot at as we shoot back. We've got to the point where we're beginning to realise 2-5 battlecruisers possibly aren't the best thing for us to be using in this arena. Missions are too easy and boring like that - but PvP is a different story.
I want to ask those who run missions as a group, what should we be looking at ships wise? We need to be able to complete the missions AND we want to be able to PvP with pretty much the same ships and set-ups.
I'm at work, and I can't find any threads/posts about this. Or any suggestions along the lines of what we're looking for.
We're also pretty low skill points - so please no t2 ships or battleships - we cannot fly them. |

Edited by: Goa Vibe on 14/03/2008 20:10:24 being that with a pack, running lvl3s should be pretty darn easy in BCs.
If you get drakes, probers will expect you to have a huge tank with horrible DPS and just come in to loot your wrecks or salvage them. Fit them for pvp - scramblers/webbers/vamp/painter. BCSs instead of SPRs... etc Put a shield booster on, too.
With a weak tank, you'll be "DPS tanking" - killing rats before they can inflict much damage.
Talk about a surprise when they come in :) scramble/web/pod (that is, if you dont care being the aggressor) or hold off and wait to see if they attack first.
Keep your scrambler/webber at the warp in point.
Being in a drake, they will probably assume they are coming in on a few pvp-incompetant carebears

None of us can fly drakes (Caldari ships), but we have our own version of the welcoming mat
What I was also after is should we all be in Battlecruisers? We're mainly facing tech2 frigates and cruisers all using more expensive ammo, or tech 2. Only normal ship we've faced is a blackbird. Is it worth bringing along our own frigates or destroyers?
Range is also a question. In PvP we appear to be facing alot of short range weapons. We've been using long range weapons as that seems to work for missions best. Should that ship at the warp in point have assault launchers for anti-frigate work, heavy missiles or heavy assaults? |

get a cnr or two, a bunch of recons, and move to level 4s
pirates will try and scan down the cnr, recons decloak and disable the hell out of the pirates, cnr + recons gank the pirates

What's a CNR?
As for the covert op's we can't fly them - as I said no t2 please. From what I've read you have a delay on being able to lock. Fighting these guys, I suspect whatever that is, they'd burn it down before that was over.
We've run a couple of level 4's as a pack of battlecruisers today. Interesting to say the least. Not sure we'd wanna get jumped running those.

Caldari Navy Raven. Which implies that you need to skill up on the raven ship skill tree

Rambling thread...
Leadership skills are a god send. If you don't already have them I would suggest someone train leadership V and all the other ones to at least IV. Since you are running L3 missions you could probably get away with equipping the leader with a WLM. That requires the leader to have level V in the tier 1 skill of the boost and leveled to what ever in the tier 2 skill. The more the better. The setup I would think would be good would be 2 BCs, one tanked for mission and one leadership, fitted with a Skirmish warfare link-interdiction maneuvers. This gives you a bonus to scram range. Put the rest of you into destroyers, I would suggest the catalyst. I also like the cormorant though, choice is yours. Fit the destroyers with webs, scrams and ABs. In the low slots, the reason I like the catalyst, place an over drive and either a nanofiber structure or an inertia stabilizer, again choice is yours. Since the BC pilots will be dealing with the mission have one or all of the destroyer pilots scanning the system for probes. I read about jettisoning 1 unit of ammo at the warp in spot of the mission and like that idea. Since there are 5 of you that is 5 cans in close proximity of the warp in point and should decloak cov-ops ships. Do it. As soon as a probe pops up on scan all of the destroyers AB to the entry point cans and start an orbit of about 8-12k from it and get ready to lock web scram and pop anything that comes onto grid.
**Disclaimer** I have never used this tactic but if I was going to run low sec missions this is what I would do. Plus it's fun to fly a destroyer.

Schalac, thank you, that is some v. good advice.
We'll give the destroyers a go. Level 3's have NPC frigates so they will have something to do. As for the leadership skills one of us started with with high skills, so we will try that. |

Im not usually to happy to give advice to people on how to kill mission busters as I am one :D
But what the hell.
There is a possibility that I thought of which only works if the guy who accepts the mission stays in station with the agent.
Since most missions are in deadspace pirates will usually fit afterburners instead of mwd. Now you said most of the targets you are facing are short range so Im thinking you mean blaster ships and such.
If you fit a mwd to your mission ships you could decline the mission when hostiles enter. this will make the mission(the deadspace area) dissaper.
You can then use your mwd to speed/range tank the short range ships only fitted with afterburner.
Just a thought.
Anyways drakes are the way to go with lvl 3 missions of any kind and you should train for one if missions are your prefered occupation. Get a last guy in a myrm with drones and blasters to sit at the warp in point ready to tackle.

Yes--I see no mention of drones by the OP..they can be very effective--destroyers don't cost much but they don't carry drones and don't have much of a tank.. Too bad about the non-caldari as pirates see a drake and think--oh geez there goes a lot of ammo cause they will think it's a passive tanked pve set-up.
The only thing about the use of drones in low sec is that it's easier to probe out mission runners when they use drones--but will they be surprised--lol
