Can anyone explain why people will cruise around in a .4 system and blast people at random?
Here's why I ask... I played freelancer and several mods. If any of you ever played it any, you know there is no 'safe space' anywhere. No Concord or anything. But yet, you could have 20 people in the same system and not have random pew-pew. If there was pew-pew it has a reason... you were tresspassing in their claimed space, you had a bounty on you, your factions were at war, etc... There was very few cases of random unprovoked attacks. Now I goto a .4 system in a Bantham and get nailed by a HAC, no warning, no reason, not a word from him afterwards. Just a completely random attack.
Now can anyone explain this? Why do people here decide that .4 or lower is just shoot anything that moves? And what kind of e-peen boost does one get from destroying a Bantham with a HAC???

lowsec has 3 kinds of players.
1) PVE Players. Miners, missioners, ratters...
2) Pirates. They will go after you for your stuff, or to get a ransom
3) Killmail *****s. They kill you for the KM.
Best advice: Watch local, be ******* careful, and GTFO if someone warps into your belt.
Better advice: don't mine in the lowsec border systems. Mine one or two jumps into lowsec, much less congestion.

2 possible answers
1 - Simple misery loves company. Some people use PvP games as a type of therapy. Their real lives suck so they come into EVE and make everyone around them miserable and that makes them feel better.
2 - They have no reason @ all other then lets see who I can kill today. There is no thought process in this just simple explosion addiction.
Pick the one that makes you feel most comfortable with the situation at hand.

In freelancer, when you killed people, did they drop their stuff for you to loot?
Because if not, there's your reason.

A few reasons really.
If you look at piracy from an isk making perspective every little bit helps. When you do a mission do you kill all the NPCs? When you mine do you make sure to grab the best asteroid in the belt? It's just maximizing your profits.
Also as stated above pirates attack everybody because it's fun and targets are rare in low sec. Admittedly this is probably one of the reasons targets are so rare. It's a vicious cycle.
A slightly more legitimate reason for blasting the low level ships is that you never know whats going to be in the cargo hold. Some high level loot is shipped in rookie ships or t1 frigates. They're much less conspicuous than blockade runners or freighters. You don't really have time to check who the pilot is and how old their char is before they warp out. Better to just kill everything that jumps through the gate, or that you find in a belt.

Because that's kind of how it is intended. You're not blue, so you show up on my overview, so I will shoot you because I can. Nothing personal. It's no different than the NPC pirates. They attack you on sight too, don't they? I don't see you complaining about them.

Admittedly that's pretty stupid as something like that is hardly worth the sec status hit (unless this was at a gate or in 0.0). But then again I don't really think it's the sheep's place to complain about how sharp the wolf's fangs are.

He either attacked you because he's a jerk, or because he suspected you may have had something valuable. Frigates, and noob ships especially, are often used to transport sensitive goods such as blueprints and faction parts.

There's probably a deep psychological explanation no doubt involving quotes from Kien and Freud but seeing as it'll be too long to explain and more likely then not rather boring you'll have to surfice with:
blowing someone up is fun.

(1) Shooting people is fun. When you're watching a gate for something worthwhile, then what the hey, a Bantam provides a moment of brief diversion.
(2) There is a never-ending supply of players who move valuables in utterly inappropriate ships. Shooting you is like picking up a lottery ticket - sure, the odds are against it, but who knows...?
(3) Some people really care about the kill/loss ratios.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

Why not kill you?
If you are there, people will shoot at you.
You're also in a noopcorp. You could be a spy, scouting out POS, watching fleet movement, any number of things. It's not worth the risk.
