Trust me ... working in that general industry, yes, that is the perfect logic of an IT person or anyone with a clue. But as soon as you add one marketing person (or account manager) to the mix, you'll be promising your customers that the server is up before it even went down just to avoid further prolonged arguments with said species

if u say its going to take 45 longer... then ppl will start camping the server and come very impatient cause of it.
underestimating your times are far worse than overestimating
This, coming back for the scheduled uptime and sitting on my arse for half an hour pressing refresh is the thing that annoys me the most. -----

Ha Ha! I've paid in advance so provided they get up and running before March 2009 so that I can pay for the next downtime, I'll be OK.

It was a stealth boost to the Expanded Cargohold I BPO
Whatever it was they f%$#ed it up and now need additional time to fix the hotfix.

Also seems odd that a BPO change is among things being located on the client (or so this sounds), considering the clear client->server comms going on when one starts a production job and the general idea of tamper proofing things by putting them on the server. Or that this alone would take 30 mins (not that I care about the extended downtime if it does any good).
The client side version would just be there for visual calls ie view the stats on a BPO, no sense calling a network for something that can be called from a local file. To actualy DO anything with a BPO though would then use the server side data (master data) to prevent tampering.
Just one way to reduce access calls on a network.

I know what you mean, Im a Lab tech for a small Hospital, I always say a test is going to take longer to run than it really does, so that way when I get the results to them faster, or if problems come up they dont start calling me asking for the results while im in the middle of solving the problem.

i'm not so happy for not being playing EvE atm, but hey ! life goes on.

Now, I know (along with most everyone else) that your customer services sucks donkeys, but really, one day, could you please (with the possibility of a cherry on top) just once, maybe, let people know you are going to break stuff, I mean fix stuff, in advance, not 5 minutes after downtime?
There I was, a 1 hour, 3 hour or 7 hour skill...I checked the in game messages, and on the forums and thought, yer I can do it, CCP can do it...1 hour 19 mins skill....
When will I learn

Everytime such unexpected downtime happens I think how it rocks to have "long skill training" set for the last 20+ days :)

As said before: Stop underestimating the downtime.
This is frustrating, annoying and unnecessary! This is not about the cash value of downtime but about customer services and customer satisfaction.
Announcing an extended downtime 5 minutes after the server actually has been shut down is not customer service. It's a **** up.
Think of all the people who wanted to start / change a skill over an hour ago and needed to go to work, sleep, had an appointment or whatever.
And please, stop flaming about people not having a real life. This is about real life. Sitting in front of the computer, waiting for CCP is not what I intended to do with my free time.

Originally by: CCP Navigator The Downtime today will be extended by 30 minutes and we expect to have Tranquility up and open for business at approximately 12.45 GMT. During the downtime a server-side change will be deployed to address recent server issues and we require an extra 30 minutes to test the changes before Tranquility is opened to the public.
The emphasized part is what this patch is about mostly.
Originally by: CCP Navigator When you start your client a Bulk Data download will start and while you're logging in it will check through a list of 35 files. If any of the files are outdated the client will download an updated version of the files(s).
The bulk data part is about the BPO.
Originally by: CCP Navigator We expect everything to go well but should there be any further issues this is where we'll let you know about them!
Fixing server issues turned out to be more volatile than expected and they're applying more time to have it stabilized so that you won't lag, crash and die, which will cause yet another whinefest and another hotfix and more whining.
The problem with CCP communication isn't that it's not coming, it's that it's not read and/or interpreted intentionally wrong for the whining's sake. -------- Ideas for: Mining Clouds
