I thought everyone would know that after a big patch there will be problems in some form. Since all fixing will happen at downtime it should be easy to figure out that the downtime may be longer than usual. Not realizing this hints stupidy. Even if there has not been patches lately its risky to set skill training to end right after daily downtime.

this reminds me once again not to let a skill finish in the first 2 hours after a dt since well this kinda nonesense happens too often in the first 2 weeks after a big patch

Originally by: Talon Rising I have been playing almost two months, and every single hotfix and patch is screwed up somehow by CCP for the stupidest reasons. In this case testers found a problem with the hotfix in what? 15 minutes? That's about how long the server was up. If they were able to find the problem that fast, why didn't they catch it on the test server? The hotfix was tested right?
In my experience, having worked as a software developer for 8 years when **** ups are this consistent the cause is almost always poor management. Whoever the person is who is managing developer resources, setting up processes, documenting procedures etc. needs to be replaced.
QFT
I don't normally ***** about stuff like this because I'm a software developer myself and "s**t happens", but for it to happen this consistently points to bad management to be honest.
I thought the whole point of a test server was to *test* these things? If people aren't using the test server properly (i.e. just want to test fancy ships) then wipe it, change it so the only things you can test are the things YOU want people to test, etc... it's not hard really.
It's ridiculous that a hotfix gets applied to a live environment apparently without any bug-testing at all. If it was obvious enough for QA to pick up on it why wasn't it discovered on the test server?

Just give everyone "extended" game time as a good will gesture.
Think good costumer relations. The past week has be rediculous. Characters stuck, lag, extended downtimes, overview mess etc etc. Never mind this EULA nonsense we pay for a service and expect "some" issues but as paying costumers we derserve a better service than we are recieving at the moment.

Quote: The EVE Information Portal would be used to provide an announcement for major patches or updates.
The Bulk Data changes today are relatively minor and would be deployed on a more regular basis than a major patch Smile

We've put up with a fair chunk of problems caused by patches and updates recently and this latest one just tops it all.
Be carefull CCP, more and more of your paying customers are taking notice. I would prefer to wait another week for a solid patch than have one apparently rushed out.
Lots of new players from your recent Steam promotion have seen nothing but problems so it appears from the forums.
I wish you guys at CCP all the best as you have a terrific game here but you need to pay more attention to QA.
Well put and agreed. Hardly the track record of people who are professional software devs. Will be curious to see if CCP publishes an apology and details for their conduct on this latest hotfix (definition of hotfix? must have changed since I last looked ) |

It's not the downtime as such .. it's the total inconsideration shown to paying customers that *****s me off.
This should have been announced yesterday preferably on the log-in screen. If they need the time fine .. but so do I .. if I'd known I could have done something useful with MY time..

They could care less about lost training time. As long as they aren't losing subscribers they will continue with half-assed, untested patches without any notice.

Edited by: Cheyenne Shadowborn on 18/03/2008 13:44:41 I'm off to another game whose name I won't mention for fear of getting censored.
A multiplayer online RPG where streaming patches work seamless, where I never ran into a single game breaking bug so far and very few minor ones, where there is no daily downtime and only once in three years I tried to login while it was offlined for maintainance, and where there is no monthly fee.
Its my happy place
I'll check back arround 1600 maybe. --

Yep - having been doing this kind of job for over 18 years I have to agree. If my team were running into these kind of issues the alarm bells would be ringing. I would be making sure that processes and documentation and double checking are in place. If the test server does not catch these issues then there is something seriously wrong with it. It feels to me like they are still trying to live in the days of the developers run the show - I can tell you for free: customers + big distributed environments + no proper management do NOT mix. It might be really boring but the only way you can make a complex distributed environment work are with careful procedures that have to be followed. There certainly should be no "I'll just try this" or "it should work". Plus given we have had two roll backs (Sunday and today) that took a lot longer than expected I would be looking at having a mechanism with a hot backup of the DB that can be checkpointed so as to make the roll back easier - even if this scheme is only used post patch.
You *cannot* avoid issues with big distributed systems - they are *really* complex and unpredictable. Therefore you need to plan to cope efficiently with the inevitable issues. Out of interest - this is one of the things google has right with their systems and one reason why they are such an effective company.

At least they will loose some customers by end of payment period anyway. Maybe i will be back 2 month before the new expansion will be released hrhr. In common then everything runs and then the big change comes and servers are down about 60% of time like this days.
Should be at least one month with about only 30% server downtime.

Sorry to disappoint you, but if CCP WOULD respond, they'd probably tell you that not all issues can be caught on the test server due to it not having the full player load and all. That seems to have been be the standard statement in the past.
Now, I'm sure we both agree a test server that doesn't have the player load of the live server makes it impossible to test some patches, especially a supposedly single number database change for a BPO --

I'm somewhat concerned. EveMon was working last night and saying I was training Gal Industrial to level 3 (as it should have been). Now it's back to saying I'm training drones (which I haven't done since yesterday morning) and won't refresh again. I'm hoping they didn't rollback to yesterday morning since I was off work yesterday and literally spent the entire day mining.

Elite was great, but loved Frontier more, becuase it let u do more and there was much more to explore. BTW even EVE is a tiny lil noce piece of software, compared to frontier :)
Frontier had 100.000.000 (1 hundred million) Stars - the planets not counted, in most cases at least 3 planets, but often enough around 8 Planets with several moons :) Amazing though, all game only 700K harddisk space requirement :)
True graphics were not as good. But recall: that was 1996.
