I would think seriously about paying for a billboard advert advertising my site - voice over and all ..!

I quit playing Planetside the day that I got home from sitting in the field all day eating MRE's and cleaning my rifle in the freezing rain and saw an Army of One add on their shiny new in game billboards.
I would quite EVE just as fast if anything out of game ever showed up in game.

Ummm.. You wouldn't have to pay to watch ads. Last time I checked the billboards just sit there unless you focus on it to watch whatever it is its showing. --------------------- Q: WTF! Why?! A: Because I can. --------------------- |

Who in their right mind pays for adverts that no one will see? Whether or not I focus on the add, I will be exposed to a passing glance of the advert, which has more of an effect than one might think.
P.S. Dont roll your eyes at me, smartass.

Plenty of clueless players would gladly pay top isk to get thier own personal ads on the billboards regardless of the validity of it. And really why would momentarily glancing at a non bounty related ad on the billboards cause you any grief unless you were somehow unbalanced and seeing things like that forces the emo rage in you to manifest itself. TBH reactions like that are between you and your Psychiatrist. So in copnclusion being in your right mind has nothing to do with Eves playerbase mate.

Real world advertising has no place in EvE, games like Burnout can have billboards that say Best Buy on them because its natural and it fits. A billboard advertising Schneider's bacon or weight loss supplements doesn't belong in EvE. Hell, I don't think anything advertisements would fit in EvE's universe and if they did it doesn't matter because its not happening, end of story.

i would say, no oog advertising. rather, "X Bane X, Mercenary corp for Hire. no pay too big, no job too small" etc etc etc, and a contact name. pay isk for in game advertisement of products, services, or Exotic Dancers.

If the advertizing is for content within the game, e.g. Alliances, world events - and done in exchange for ISK, this could prove interesting.
If it was for out-of-game, probably "experience breaking" content, e.g. "Drink Coke, not Quafe!" I would have to say "no".
Hell no, even.

So your saying an ad for Fleshlight using a Thorax as the 'actor' wouldn't garner a chuckle or two?

And this is what I guess I'm supporting. OOG ads would be amusing if they were somehow restricted to an Eve theme but only the in game ads should really be allowed. --------------------- Q: WTF! Why?! A: Because I can. --------------------- |

The day somebody puts an add for hifi-equipment, automobile parts, glittery fonts, custom smileys, bad flash-games with lightly clad anime chicks, info on dropping drugs, joining the army or "pimping my rig" in my eve-experience I shall:
- vacate this premise, abandon my computer and lock myself into an air-sealed cupboard, silently rocking back and forth.
...let's not even go there ...ever... again. -

Anyway.
I was merely going to say what was already said. Anything out of game related, big no no.
However, if a player/corp alliance/ wants to stick either
A: A recruitment ad. B. Some Egotistical video about what they've done recently or plan to do. C. ISK offers for someones death/whereabouts/items. D. Some high profile advertisement for stuff you're selling.
Then I think it could be interesting.

I would like to see in game advertisements though. Guild recruitments, looking for work, or whatever types of things. Perhaps special missions could be offered only by reading a billboard to get the information or something.
It'd add a bit more realism to the billboards. I kind of like them now, but they serve no purpose other than fluff and to open news on your browser.

Probably. Obviously they would want to weed that stuff out.
It would add another money sink to the game though, which in MMO's is a pretty good thing. Inflation in this game doesn't seem as bad as others I've played though.

IIRC the guy who wrote the billboard code is no longer with CCP and no one else has any idea how the system works, which is why they never do anything with the billboards.

Yep. Otherwise we'd have IG adds by now. It was touted as a big new feature years ago. Then they realized they didn't know how to use the billboards and the "feature" quickly faded away to "When did we say that?"

Edited by: Drachtul Tun''Dull on 19/03/2008 08:08:35 My understanding was that the guy who originally coded the billboards departed the company but failed to document what he did, and they haven't put in the resources to figure out how to make them dynamic (which I am told was part of the idea in the beginning).
Could just be a myth, and if so I would appreciate it if someone could shoot it down. If I've heard it others have as well, and I love to debunk wild stories.
Edit: Well, looks like someone above me heard much the same story. I fail at thread reading

Must be a myth because anyone who has watched his own HTTP traffic while moving around in empire knows how the billboards work ... Also they had a bug with the graphics format useable by the billboards a while back and managed to fix it.
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...
