I just got ID-ed buying alcohol-free beer.
No kidding.
I pointed out the beer was alcohol-free, the woman checked, but to no avail. Even though the cans were clearly marked NON-ALCOHOLIC in 20pt font, the till buzzed and that was the final authority.
Where have our freedoms gone?

Yes, I agree. No freedom was lost here, only that the person behind the counter was a moron.

Being an engineer, I try and find the most efficient method of getting alcohol into my system. Which begs the question, why are you buying a beer without alcohol? I see no other advantage to drinking it. ---------------- Tarminic - 33 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.79.2 |

While no offense intended, why in the hell would you willingly buy alcohol free beer? Unless you're a recovering alcoholic, which that case you shouldn't even be buying that at all. But still, come on!

Even though I have never gotten ID-ed for buying alcohol-free beer (as I personally think, that **** probably tastes better), I get ID-ed a lot in general.
The legal drinking age here is 18, and I keep getting ID-ed even though I'm 21. Then the person behind the counter checking always blushes....

I knew that question was going to be asked.
Honestly, I like the taste. This wasn't Kaliber type horse****, it was quite decent stuff.
Also, while it is not the case here, there are often cultural reasons for not drinking alcohol. You sometimes see Arabic and other Eastern language translation on the labels of the export product, and anecdotally such beverages do appear to be popular in those parts. People there seem to have nothing against the taste. So, that can be a valid reason for others.
It also rehydrates you faster than pure water, which can be handy if you do intense exercise. Sports drinks are expensive poison which do more harm than good.
An added bonus is flexibility - sometimes I have to drive all day at no notice and drinking alcohol during the week is out of the question. Safety first!
There are lots of reasons, and being a recovering alcoholic is not one of them.

Alcohol free beer largely tastes like crap. I'm a big beer lover (for the taste, too) and I honestly don't see why anyone would subject themselves to it. Glass of lemonade > Kaliber any day.

Well, here in the States theres only one brand of alcohol-free beer that is usually seen; O'Doul's. It's pretty sad, tastes like someone put ice in Bud Light (already crappy) to make it cold, then let the ice melt, heated it up, put it back in the fridge, and then gave it to you to drink. Having that as our only main option, I'd rather not drink anything than O'Doul's.
And it really rehydrates you faster than water? I think I'm going to have to seen some legitimate resources citing this! Does that mean that the actual alcohol is the only part of alcoholic drinks that contribute to a hang over?

Are you perchance in Cali? They have some pretty stupid laws about this. My old RA, long ago, tried to buy some and was carded. He was like, "But it doesn't have any alcohol in it."
"You still need ID."
"You realize I could go get some Nyquil and buy it without a problem right?"
"Yep"
So it's not about freedom, it's about stupid laws that hear "Beer" and not the "non-alcoholic" part.

Unless your facial hair is platinum blonde with patches of black hairs, then they just think your a homeless teen.

Dehydration isn't the only thing that causes a hangover (you are drinking poison, after all).

Slightly OT, but anyway: There was a hilarious article a while back here in Sweden. A man of ~75 years of age tried purchasing a case of beer, but was denied as he didn't carry ID on him at that time. He tried reasoning with the clerk and had her call her manager over, and the manager said the same thing. He couldn't buy it because he wasn't carrying ID. He promptly refused to go get it just to make a point.
How stupid does one need to be to not understand why you check ID of those buying alcohol? You don't check it just because it's something you're "supposed to do", you check it if the person trying to buy might be below the required age.

A lot of places have laws with hefty fines attached about when you need to see ID. Here, it's if the person appears to be under 25, but I guess other places it's always ID?
