You probably have seen the NPC hucksters, peddlers, and traders floating outside stations every once in awhile and noticed that they don't really do anything useful. The idea here is that at every station in high security space will have a station service to hire an NPC courier.
Similar to creating a contract, options will be presented to choose from a class of ship, origin and destination, and items to transport. Ship classes would include shuttle, frigate, industrial, and freighter. Valid origins and destinations would be any station in high security space. The ISK cost would be calculated on a base cost + the class of ship * the number of jumps. This could introduce new skills that would modify the number of active couriers a player can have, lower the base cost and lower the cost per jump.
Once a courier is hired, an NPC is spawned outside the station and will travel to the specified destination using autopilot. Using the standard autopilot (warp within 15km rather than warping to 0) gives players a few options. If goods are needed faster then the player transports them themself or finds another solution. If players choose to attack these NPC couriers for the goods they transport then they still can and Concord will respond accordingly. |

It's a novel idea.
Could effectively remove a profession and all that entails off the board if more competative than player contracted run services however.
So have to say probably does more harm than good for a "sandbox" environment where trying to promote as much player interaction is likley more preferable. Certainly would seem so for this proposal imho. Bounty Hunting for CSM 7

Why? Players already do this. Courier contracts, or, more reliably, services like Red Frog. Why would we need NPCs to take their jobs? (derp de derp!) |

True, but neither are time and/or cost efficient for short range, small volume and low value shipments. |

Then do it yourself. CCP are not going to replace a player run industry with NPCs, that defeats the purpose of EVE. |

But I see no real player industry in small scale freight. I find most public courier contracts of the nature a joke with rewards less than a level 1 distribution mission. I can't imagine many players actually taking these contracts. |

Because maybe all you see are the contracts that no one wants to take. Most "good" courier contracts are snapped up in a matter of minutes and/or are given to those that people that consider "trustworthy." Just because you don't see it on the public market, doesn't mean that it isn't happening behind the scenes.
TBH... I don't really see much a problem here. It just seems that you're a bit too paranoid/greedy/lazy to...
1. Get a nubbin that doesn't know any better to take care of things (actually, it's a nice "trust building exercise" for those you have recently brought into the corp) . 2. Raise your reward so someone actually accepts the hassle of doing such a mundane job (oh wait... that would require you to cut into your wallet, right?). 3. You spend an extra 5 to 15 minutes doing it yourself (God forbid, you actually expend a little bit of effort on moving something "short range, small volume and low value"). So offer better rewards, and people will take them. |

Honestly _as long as NPC couriers dont interfere with player hauling_ its a good idea.
And they wouldnt if the prices are pretty high. But you'll know hauling will be done in a day or two. That would require careful planning not to mess with player hauling services (Push, Red Frog etc).
Not only that it makes sense to see much more NPCs in this game, because we pod pilots arent the only one in space. But that's an immersion issue, and many don't even care about it. |

How, exactly, would having NPCs hauling your stuff for you not interfere with having players do it for you? I mean, can you not see how daft that statement is? If an NPC is doing it, then a player can't, so the NPC is interfering by default :/ |

+1. a nice new idea. more intelligent and dynamic sandbox is always good. could/would probably only be used for low-value transports which are just waisted time on your side anyways. would not replace any player-based professional hauling. check the moderated 10000 papercuts evelopedia page! http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Little_things_and_ideas_-_low_hanging_fruit_-_10000_papercuts comment, bump(!) and like what you like |

I say no to this idea, although I wouldn't mind not having to do the work myself, and that is precisely why it should not be done.
The only reason anything has any value in Eve is due to the fact that we must put time and effort into things. Shooting, hauling, mining, forum whoring, scamming, all of it requires some time and effort. The less time and effort something takes, the less value it has.
If CCP were to allow NPCs to haul for us, CCP would likely have the NPCs collect ISK for their services. This at first glance seems to be a good way to express the cost of the time and effort not expended by players. However, CCP has no idea what the true value of such a service would be. Whatever rate they pick would be arbitrary, a best guess and instantly wrong.
This will distort the natural market set transaction cost of goods and services in Eve. Eve is already too small and it would become even smaller if such a thing were allowed to happen. Opportunities for all players, new to old would be removed, markets would become further homogenized.
We can not allow another price fixing scheme in the Eve economy. There are too many already. |

please no this removes a role in the game. The Hauler! I agree with several people: CCP needs to focus most of eve's recources on FIS, but the development of WIS still needs to continue, just as a slower and more efficient pace. In eve I wish to be more than just a machine. |

I don't see how this would remove a role in the game when limited by number of active couriers a player. Something like one courier per level. |

No. Learn to pay a fair isk/jump rate that makes it worth another player's time to do what you're too lazy to do yourself.
Next idea: NPC mercenaries you can hire to go out and rat and run complexes for you, and bring you back the shiny loot, while you spend your time doing PvP or flapping your gums in local.
Another good one: NPC miners you can hire to go find rocks, mine them, and bring you back the ore, so you can make stuff.
If everyone only gets one of each, I don't see how this could be a problem. |
