Hey guys, this may be a pretty obvious question but how do they work?
I mean say my ship has a base defence of 50% and i buy an item that gives and extra 40% in that type, does it then make my resitance 90%? im confused.
thanks for the help

If you have 50% base resistance and use an item that provides 40% resistance it reduces the remaining incoming damage by 50%
(1-0.5)x0.4=0.2 = 0.5+0.2= 70% resistance.
On top of that comes the stacking nerf where each additional module affecting a single stat is reduced in effectivness. Ie, the first module is 100% effective, the second 87% and the third 57% etc (ranking from most effective to least effective. So the most powerful module would be 100% effective, the second most powerful 87% effective etc). The 87% etc isn't the exact value btw.
So three 40% resistance modules on top of a 50% base resistance would result in:
(1-0.5)x0.4=x =0.20 (1-(0.5+x))x0.4x0.87=y = ~0.105 (1-(0.5+x+y))x0.4.0.57=z = ~0.045 Final resistance = 0.5+x+y+z= 0.5+0.2+0.105+0.045 = ~85% resistance. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. Ok, so let me double check....so basically, (disregarding stacking here) if i have a 50% basic and buy that 40% item, it will take 40% off of the remaining 50%? so it will be 20% more overall?
its all very confusing

If you think that this ISN'T simple math, perhaps EvE isn't the game for you.

Well i clearly understood it as i posted the correct assesment of what was said after...plus the confusing comment was sarcasm/humour..hence the smileys
But like was said, im not farmiliar with the game mechanics. I.e i dont know how there worked out due to being new (as i posted in the very beggining...) not that i am incapable of doing simple math.
but thanks for yet another pointless ignorant post, a-hole

If you're capable of looking through stickied topics, I'm sure you would find the answer rather quickly, instead of wasting our time with questions repeated every 2 days. If not, there IS a search box and even though it's rather crap, you will always find a topic like this.
The only ignorant one here is you, so grow up a little and do some searching instead mmkay?

So asking questions because im new is now called ignorant?
I made it clear i would be very thankful for any help regarding the matter in question and was very thankful when someone posted the answer.
It was also very clear from the title of this thread that it may be a very obvious question to an experienced player, yet you choose to come in here of your own accord and post a pointless and insulting comment for no apparent reason then your own self gratification
I didn't force you to come in here or reply, so how about you stop wasting my time and grow up? "mkay"
wow we really need more people like you in the eve community, i wonder how fast it would die then
thanks for stoping by, have a cookie

Stickies are there for a reason, next time read them. Think of it as self-serve vs. asking US. You're being lazy, and instead of simply looking through a stickied topic you have to make your own thread, and ask for us to answer the same questions over, and over, and over.
Maybe you would understand given my position. Whatever.

Now this i can agree with and have no problem with, the reason i didn't use the search / check the stickies is that when i have done this perviously for ship fittings i find them to be very out dated and usually very conflicting.
Sorry for re-posting what has been asked many times before, if you would have said this in the first place there would have been no problem
