I kind of doubt whole corps are doing it but there are certainly individuals. I, for instance, decided a certain item should cost 40% more than it was going for so I bought up everything below that point and carefully relisted it. Much to my delight I've sold virtually all of it at 30+% profit.

If there are, it's likely one guy and all of his alts.
There was a story on here a couple months back about a corp that tried it with micro batteries, but I think they're the exception rather than the rule. --- Honest officer, the dwarf was on fire when I got here! Why use a corp when one person can do it all by himself?

If it weren't for armies of alts, I would say large scale market manipulation is a good (maybe the only?) reason for traders to band together in a corp and work cooperatively on a goal rather than each person trying to maximize his own profits.

I can and have bought out the market on certain items and I don't think the affect can get much greater than that. What is guaranteed to get greater is the hassle as everything now has to be coordinated with a group.

/disagree.
I have been known to do a little solo market play, but my efforts would greatly benefit from a colleague or three. The trick to manipulation is market ownership and control - to make the most out of a market play you need to be hands-on 24/7 for a few days before and after. That's tricky for just one man.

You do have a point there but if you try scaling it beyond that the benefits are rapidly overcome by the hassles of coordinating it and coming to consensus on issues. Really, what you want is a small cabal of friends to do market manipulation with not a whole corp. Unless there's a clear chain of command, a corp is simply to unwieldy to be worth the trouble.

Consensus? Yep you're right, another key to manipulation is clear vision and instantaneous (sometimes instinctive) decisions. A 'committee' would make a pigs ear of that imo. Any manipulation 'group' be it 2 people or 20, would need to have one clear leader who makes ALL of the decisions with no questioning.
Dictatorships ftw!!
