Im serious when I ask this question: Are they (the developers of said MMO's) serious or is it just an attempt by that company and title holder to suck more money out of the fanbase? To date I believe their has been 4 MMO's based on a film or a show with a 5th one slated for release in the near future I believe:
Star Wars Galaxies The Matrix Online Pirates of the caribbean Lord Of the Rings
StarGate Worlds (coming out soon).
If one were to look at a site like mmogchart.com you will see that none of these MMO's currently have over 150k subs and all show a sharp decline in their subscription base history dispite their source material having been seen by millions of individuals.
So again my question is are these MMO's that are based on a film or show destined to be lousy from the moment they are announced or what?

Swg and MO both have the same reason for there failure, SOE. SWG was a good game but was made rubbish because SOE employs morons. Can't really comment on the others since I have no knowledge of them.

Agreeing with the assessment of SOE.
SWG seemed very popular for a while there. It had lots of tedious inane crafting stuff I don't really get along with in a game but which seemed to really go over with MMO players. Then SOE killed it.
MxO... I don't know what went wrong there. It actually looks pretty interesting in some respects. Among other things the developers actually walk around in the city as the major characters. It sounds like they are attempting to make the world involving at least which is more than could be said for most MMOs. I presume the failsauce was heaped high in the implementation stage.
I also assume subscriber figures are subject to a Pareto distribution so 20% of the MMORPGs have 80% of the customers and again 80% of the 80% subscribe to 20% of the 20%... so having mediocre subscriber figures doesn't neccesarily mean a game is bad, just that it didn't manage to unseat WoW or whatever. I'm constantly amazed that MxO failed. It's the perfect MMOG: you play someone who plugs himself into a computer and plays what is essentially a game. How can that not work? And yet it fails miserably.

Problem with Firefly as an MMO, is that the Universe itself isn't all that appealing, and doesn't really stand out from any other sci-fi flick. The genious of the show was the characters, their stories, and the humour/drama that comes from their relationships. But I support the MMO, anything that might generate enough of an income to bring Firefly back on the air gets my vote.

They get out of scrapes (or attempt to) by being smart or lucky half the time. I totally cannot see how that will translate into a MMORPG with levels and stuff. |

I think you also have to consider the sheer number of MMOs you're competing with when you launch one. You've got WoW, EQ, Lineage 2 all those kiddified casual games. You probably have to be doing something really different to make any kind of splash.
True that there are alot of MMO's out there, but you would think an MMO based on cultural phenomina, like The Matrix or Lord Of The Rings, films that were seen world wide with LOTR having been a serise of books over 60 years you would think that they would have been WoW contenders if not WoW killers right off the bat simply because you would have had millions, if not atleast a billion or more, individuals familiar with the lore of that story. But it seems that the exact opposite has occured with the MMO's based off of the movies failing to attract their respective crowds.

It was relatively bad timing, LotRO launched as WoW was already very well established and TBC content just took it into overdrive speed.

Howabout a Coronation Street MMO?
Standard skills would include "Sense of Northern Desperation and Futility", "Having Incredibly Violent Rows Without Swearing", "Successfully Running a Business No-one Else In The Country Can Make Money From Any More" and "Running The Rover's Return", seeing as virtually every fecking character in Coronation street has either owned or worked there at some point.
Obviously it would be impossible to train any sort of vehicle skill, given the alarmingly high number of car crashes in Corrie.
Hmmm. with minor changes, we could have an Eastenders MMO too.

In SWG they should have left out Jedi all together, made them only as part of events or not have the player force user be a jedi at all. It had potential but SOE definitely killed it.
I mean, how cool is it to play a game called Star Wars: An Empire Divided?
As for an MMO that I think could work...well first it's going to be almost impossible to top the popularity of WoW, but I had an idea of a primitive type of MMO set back when the Neanderthals and the Cro Magnon first encounter each other, or maybe just tribes of humans competing for territory in an ancient Europe and Middle East. Heck, the game could evolve that instead of just territory being fought over in one specific time period, the expansions for it would move through history, similar to Age of Empires. |

I had thought of that too. Or at least a really detailed single player game. Think Elder Scrolls does Chasm City. Pure win.

OH GOD YES. I want all that cool stuff from the tech manual in a MMOFPS. BF2142 and Planetside were so obviously borrowing from it. I figured you just include a couple of human power blocks and include the bugs as PVE content / plotline stuff.

I need a MMORPG based on the Muppet show.
It should revolve around the ability to roleplay funny looking puppets saying stange things or singing songs. :3
That'd be so sweet and entertaining ._.

There used to be one like ten years ago or so. Aliens Online. Would be cool to have one again though. Meanwhile play the Shadowgrounds games. TPS and offline but they are awesome.
