So I have been around for several months now and recently got myself a Hulk (woot) and am looking at ways to maximize my mining abilities.
These are what I have currently in regards to mining skills and accessories (shields, drones, etc.):
Drones Drones: V Drone Interfacing: III (planned to IV) Scout Drone: V Gallente Drone Spec: II
Electronics Electronics: IV (Planning to V)
Engineering: Engineering: III (Planning to V) Shield Compensation: III (Planning to V) Shield Management: II (Planning to V) Shield Operation: III (planning to V) Shield Upgrades: II (Planning to V)
Industry Industry: V Mining: V Mining Upgrades: IV Omber: IV Plag: IV Pyro: IV Refining Efficiency: IV (Planning to V) Refinig: V Scord: IV Veld: IV
Mechanic Mechanic: III (planning to V)
Science Astrogeology: V Metallurgy: II (planning to V)
Spaceship Command Exhumers: III (planning to IV, or V)
------------- What I don't have and am going to be training soon to:
Drones: Drone Navigation/Durability/Sharpshooting: IV Combat Drone: IV -------------
Is there anything else that I should be looking to skill towards, except for the other ores? My biggest concern is getting my ship properly equipped for low-sec mining, and am planning to have the following set up:
Hi: 3x Strip Miner II Med: 1x Gistii-A Small Shield Booster, 1x Eutetic Cap Recharger, 2x NPC Specific Hardener Low: 2x MLU II
Is there anything else I am missing that I should look into getting/training?
Thanks for the help beforehand. |

That's a lot of level 5 skills you're planning there. Looks like you have everything covered to me, for regular mining at least. |

How about in regards to Low-Sec? Save for the necessary escorts, is there anything I should get to make it less of a hassle out in the dark and evil corners of EVE? |

You missed the obvious 4 shield skills (Under Engineering) Em/Kin/Explosive/Therm Shield Compensation
Also, train up to Mining Foreman V. If you get a buddy, and make a fleet with you as squad leader you increase yield a lot !

You also need to train all the specific races drone specs to at least level 2-3 so you can have t2 drones that do all potential damage types.
Electronic warfare to level 4. to allow (ewdi) Electronic warfare drone interfacing. = +3000m to drone control range per level = 15,000 m total theres a mod called drone link augmentation it allows for 20k extended range of drone control, but in a hulk you wont fit it is why i suggest this idea to you.
and lastly i see no mention of rigs.
consider 3 cargo opts (+20% to cargo capacity per rig) ,(drawback = -10% armor hps per rig), this will give you alot more time mining as you will spend less time in transit to and from a station to unload. More time mining means more isk. Also it is not wise to mine to a jet can with a hulk unless you have a buddie right there with you to move the ore to there ship and take it to the station. Also consider shield screen reenforcers(+35% to specific screen types shield resist), or core defense field purgers (improves the shields recharge rate by 20% per rig ), (drawback + 10% signature radius per rig), these make ur ship have a larger sig but does that really matter its a Hulk afterall : ) .
and if you train up ur astronautic and shield rigging skills to level 5 you will cut the drawbacks by 50% goodluck. : )

You mean 2 cargo opts? Hulk has only 2 rig slots last time I looked. /me prays that CCP added one!

In regards to drone range....not much need for it on a hulk. The hulk's lock range is already lower than the scout drone 5 skill bonus.
One thing I don't see here that I consider essential for a hulk is evasive maneuvering skill, anything to give that beast better agility for faster getaways/aligns when needed helps. imo anyhow

How about Gallente Indy to 5.
Cleaning your jet cans the easy way with 3 cargohold optimizers and 5 expanded cargohold II you have about 38k m3 cargohold. That's about 1.5 jet can per run.
And easy access to an obelisk for bringin the ore to a good refining station.

Edited by: Anaesthera on 21/04/2008 15:04:12 You don't need to train all those to level V. To run a perma-tank with all t2-mods Hulk, you can leave some at level 4.
Level IV: Shield Compensation Tactical Shield Manipulation Shield Upgrades Energy Systems Op Energy Management Energy grid upgrades
Level V: Shield Management Shield Operation
Also- Metallurgy IV and Exhumers III are fine.

It looks to me like you plan to mimic Halada's tanking setup from his miner's guide. As I recall, when he wrote that, MLU2s did not exist, but I am not sure whether he has updated the tanking fit stuff lately. I think I tried to work tanking fits with my 2 MLU2s and it isn't easy to do -- even with electronics 5 and mu4. If/when I need to fit a harder hulk in more dangerous areas, I think I will drop back to 1 mlu2 and a dcu2, then the rest of the tank seems to fit fine.
My first hulk pilot trained for all T1 and most T2 crystals almost right away. My 2nd hulk driver has the luxury of training when we are in a focused mining niche that requires only 1 set of t2 crystals. My point is that I feel like I wasted training time with the first guy -- though he can refine everything which is nice, whether he mines it or not -- because you will likely end up gravitating toward the most lucrative mining situations. Why train for spodumain crystals when you can mine bistot in the same areas? Why train for low sec ores when there is likely less risk and more isk in null sec? My only real point about future skills is to train for your situation first rather than plan to have perfect skills for everything mining-related.
My hulk pilots are working on mining drone operation V and drone interfacing V now to use mining drones and defensive drones to the max. Soon, my director is working on MD5 and probably even gang warfare spec 5 for the nice mindlink and to hand out the best bonuses. I doubt that I will regret these goals.

May be I missed it but did not see ice harvesting planned. I have noticed my corp doesn't mine minerals so much anymore because of mineral prices but does a lot of Dark Glitter which is more profitable and needed to fuel POS's anyway. |
