Sentry drones are really annoying to use, especially when you want to pick them up. It would less of a hassle if they can move, but not fire at the same time.
Scenario: You drop your sentries, they orbit your ship. You press 'drone engage' and they suddenly stop , waits 4 seconds then start shooting. You press 'return and orbit' they stop shooting and orbit you until you tell them to engage or recall.
This would make them way more useable, especially for the smaller drone boats like the ishtar and gila while still not being overpowered. A 4 second delay when they stop until they can fire would be needed to stop people from being able to spam engage and orbit back and forth.

I would be fine with sentry drones being able to move slowly but only when told to return to ship... they should not be able to move towards the target they are attacking...
to prevent people from using it as a tactical advantage, when they been told to return, they have to return to the ship before they can fire again (pick them up, and drop again)
how fast should they be able to return? i do not know, but something between 100m/s and 300m/s, nothing fast
why? because even when speeding back to your sentry drones, picking them all up at the same time is hard because they are spread out when dropped... unless you stay where you dropped them. having them center in on your ship when you approach them could be really useful
but non of this is required, this would only be if... people wanted it |

If the mountain won't come to Mohammad then Mohammad should go to the mountain. If your drones won't orbit you then you can orbit your drones.

Its not about the ability to have them orbiting but the ability for them to return to the ship after combat or when you need to warp out. If this were to change i can see a rise in the use of 125mbit drone bandwith in pvp. Especially ships like Armageddons, dominix and even the typhoon would have a big upswing.
Another way to balance them would be to make it immobile for the duration of its gun so it works a bit like a 4s siege each time it shoots. |

give them a good speed for traveling across the battlefield, but then also give them something like an internal siege timer of 15-30 seconds. meaning they can fire immediately but when you need to get them back, you will have to wait for this timer to end first. |

I for one think that sentries should be changed. Nothing more annoying than scooping them >.> Making them movable sounds promising, but in other hand who with his right mind would then ever use heavies again?
You need to make them not replace each others. So either some penalties should be applied on sentries (ie -tracking/damage?) or buffs to heavy drones (+tracking/damage).
Another solution would be, as one of an above posters said, cutting their speed to just 100-300m/s, but then some balancing could still be needed eventually.
So I support this (since, really something *needs* to be done), but not fully. :) |

I think that would probably obsolete heavy drones in most all situations. A better solution, imo, is to make them 20m^3 instead of 25 so you can stick a couple extras in your bay, or a squad of combat drones, and redrop as needed (bandwidth unchanged). Perhaps adjust their cost down a little to compensate as well. |
