walking on planets, exploring planets, conquering planets? very exciting, but how would we do it? how about... RTS style, ala starcraft!
each player brings along units bring to the planet. Units cost isk and are controlled rts style. theres a max unit cap per player,( depending on skills blah blah). Then when we move onto something like starcraft :D FPS style planet combat, the scale is silly, 100 a side armies scrapping for control over anb entire planet? not very believable, but 100 commanders * 200 soldiers per commander per side is much better, much more in cohesion with the strategic nature of eve too :)

na good old FPS style, jump out your ship run around with a ****load of rocket launchers attached to your mech...
Also if they decided to FPS they MUST create a jump feature, so I can bunny hop around like a small child on a bouncy ball (yano them ones with lil ears for handles)... ------------------

No way, it should totally be like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. And at the end you ascend and become one with Planet which then turns into a ship that you can use like a titan.

It should be done via a rock-scissors-paper mini game. |

Ooohhh... would totally be down for Mechwarrior-style combat in EVE. Has been way too long since a good mech release. It'd be an awesome futuristic addition to the game (for planetary-action ideas that is). I'd be the first one to lay down a couple billion isk for a Dire-Wolf BPO |

It will be a ways off, this is at the last of the major additions list. This will happen after station ambulation at the latest I would imagine.
From what I know, and I think its in the patch notes section - future developments - that they would do planets in 2 stages.
Stage 1 I believe was that there would be some possible interaction via outposts to interact with the planet it orbits, and manage it (weither it would be mining, cities, whatever CCP puts on planets). You would also be able to fly into low orbit (atmospheric flight)
Stage 2 I believe is full planetary interaction - meaning landing, and walking around. Wither they did this as a FPS or a RTS style system, I have no clue.
Those two stages I read of was from a long time ago so it's bound to be altered at this point, but thats what I do know.

Personally I would like CCP to make it so that planets are of great value - something that would give alliances something new to fight with, and a valuable resource, and a new way to fight. I'd implement some special resource that planets can generate that is of great value and use. I would do this in different steps.
Step 1: Capture a planet, set up a station (like a POS for planet surfaces - a ground base). In order to do this to a enemy group for example, you obviously have to penetrate their space fleets - then deploy ground forces. The base, much like a pos, can be expanded on and even have planetary defenses equipped.
In order to capture these planets CCP would have to make special planetary siege capitals designed to attack ground bases from space. These capitals would obviously have limited abilities against other ships, and cannot fight back very well and would be fleet dependent - but the most effective way to destroy ground bases. They would also be very heavily tanked to withstand both fleet fire and the ultra heavy planetary defenses.
At this point the planet is no more than a base with the ability to have defenses and exploit certain limited resources.
Step 2: Settlement and Outpost. At this point you need to build a outpost, then you have the option to 'upgrade' the base on the planet, and set up a settlement and spaceport. You may now access the planet more easily - and you have a larger array and yield of valuable product that would be of great relevance to the alliance. This could also make this system a very high-profile target due to its value though.
I would implement 3 states on planets. First state is unclaimed - up for grabs. The second state would be claimed, but not settled. The third state is settled, and with a outpost in orbit. In order to capture a planet you would need to disable the planetary defenses (1st stage) - then fight on the ground and low-orbit and take full control of it - and fight enemy players on the surface as well if they choose to defend on the surface.
In the distant future CCP could introduce new tools to be used in ground warfare, and dropships could be introduced to deploy certain specialized equipment and provide supplies. "All warfare is based on deception... we must seem unable...seem inactive...and crush him " - Sun Tzu, the Art of War |
