Good people, experts, veterans. Lend me your wisdom. I've been playing since November and consider myself a newb. Through diligent mining, and some Sancha's pirate whacking, I have amassed several million ISK and a nice cruiser(Amarrian Maller). But I'm about to unsubscribe. I need new goals, a new direction, and I have NO IDEA what to do next.
I worked up to a battlecruiser, the Prophecy, mainly through legitimately salvaging wrecks, but decided it looked stupid, and I preferred my old cruiser. So I'm sort of stalled. I earm a few million each session, salvaging wrecks, but if all I'm aiming for is a bigger and bigger ship ... WTF...!
What do you guys do? I see guys mining their asses off, manufacturing stuff ... do you set up corps, is that your goal?
I need some direction!
I've reached my threshold, I need something new to aim for...
Any advice appreciated!

So you've done NPC stuff... and you haven't joined a corp, I'd say that there is your problem.
Find an active corp with people to interact with, and perhaps stop doing NPC/PVE stuff and start doing some pvp. The whole PVP thing is a personal thing but you SHOULD join a proper corp imo.

That could be it. I used to do shipping missions, until salvage far outpayed any of those missions. PLus I used to turn down combat missions given by agents after I got horribly burned ... :) So agents stopped offering missions.
So, PC Corps. What goes on? HOw do you work together on stuff? How close are you? Or is just a 'hi five' when you happen to meet in the same system?

Try joining Eve University as your first corp. They are a great newbie corp and get you into pvp as well.

Eve isn't a Pve game where there is an intriguing storyline for you to follow. Get into a good corp, ie not one of those mission running and mining ones.

There are hundreds of corps, and each one is different. Some do whatever, and some work together. IMO, what you need is 0.0, because you are working together with your friends to build an empire. And to me it sounds like you are bored with empire.
Don't unsubscribe. I did, and I regret losing that year of training. Get into 0.0, you won't look back. --

Another thing; This isn't WOW (or any other MMO) where people say that you have to be 70 before the game starts, where you need certain gera before blahblahblah.
This is EVE, there's no set goals, it's up to YOU to be active about things and NOT do any grinding but just try different things, you may like doing market stuff 1 week, PVP another or whatever. There's no clear path and nothign is handed to you. Set your own short and medium goals.

You haven't really played EVE until you've been in an active corp, it totally changes the entire game
A learning-oriented organization like EVE University or Agony Unleashed is a good place to start off if you don't want to commit yourself right away; alternatively, try having a browse through the corporate advert tool* and see if there's some corps in there who look like they might match up with your playstyle.
* Hit the "Corporation" button on the sidebar (the one with the five stars), then go to the Recruitment tab and see what adverts are there - there's a whole load of options you can play with to narrow down exactly what you're looking for.

Edited by: Rathurbosk on 13/04/2008 17:05:29 Thanks, everyone.
I will have a look at the University. Truth be told, I like mining, but speculative trade sort of holds an appeal to me from my days in the 1980s playing Traveller, the old pen and paper roleplaying game. I might follow up leads on that aspect of EVE - if such exists.

Sorry, but last I heard eve university was at war with privateers. The university typically stops recruitment during wars to avoid new players getting immediately ganked and to prevent even more spies from joining.
You might want to talk to one of their recruitment officers to double check.

This isn't exactly true ..
It depends on a corp and what they do really. Not everyone can join Evolution and pwn some g00ns.

True but I think you're more likely to find friends to chat and have a laugh with in a player corp. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

I agree with this. Doing missions can be boring even with healp from corp members...
Me, Lord Evangelian, Big carebear extradinair likes to PVP every now and then, more now then then , but the thrill you get will blow your socks off...
Picture it, that ship you spend months perfecting, i sin battle, you don't know if you can win, but your at a stale mate, your palms are sweating an dyoru shaking becuase you know this ship has been your pride and joy since your bought it. And pop goes the other ship....your left with the satisfaction of knowing that he was feeling the same way as you and his cursing at his computer screen...becuase he hasn't got a ship...
We hate pirates becuase they take whats not theres and make your ship go pop...
But when you try pirating, youll see why they do it...
Get your self a rifter/incursus, update your clone, and march to low sec with a fresh face...and post your stories im intrested to see how you get on...!

I think the advice is pretty sound. The best thing to do is to either join a corp or if you can get some friends together create a corp. The options then get much bigger and fun gets better.
PS. If you like the cruiser, stick to the cruiser, and continue to work on the skills. In capable hands a cruiser is a powerful tool.

If your corp is just a "hi-five" one, the leave it ASAP.
EvE is 100x better as a player corp. In a good corp the other memnbers will help and advise you, and working as a team you'll accomplish things that would never be possible solo.
My (biased) advice would be to join a 0.0 corp that accepts relatively new players such as yourself and will give you good experience in combat and survival in a hostile environment.
I highly recommend you take the Agony Unleashed course so that you know the PvP basics.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

Yup, joining a player corporation was huge for me. I was perfectly content to stay in an NPC corporation and carebear it up, but I was dealing with the same problem you're facing: a lack of direction and goals. Some players can self-motivate themselves and work just fine solo, but it seems the majority of players in Eve need close allies and bigger goals in the game to get them to continue playing. I'm glad to see you've chosen to look into joining a player corporation. A lot of players, once they realize that they don't enjoy game solo, just quit instead of trying to work with a team. ---

This is not a typical MMO where the goal is to get bigger and bigger ships and make more and more money. You set your own goals. If you like making money, then fine, do that.
I'd highly recommend joining a corp and working toward some sort of corp goal.
Hint: Eve is a PvP game, although not all PvP is combat. Trading and even mining are competitive between players, and hence, PvP. |

Would probably say find a corp, and seriously see if you can't find some pvp. Some people hate it, some people live for it. Most of us are in between.
Tackling (fast friggie with MWD, point and perhaps web) is fun. Then you get blown up as someone decides they don't like being tackled. Then you realize that it was a cheap frigate anyway (and you have 5 just like it back at the station), and you just played a large part in bringing down something a lot bigger than your little frigate.
And then there's Cruisers. A bit more expensive, but they've actually got enough slots to specialize in a job pretty well, be that DPS, EW support, heavy tackler, etc. -------------------- ICE Blueprint Sales FIRST!! -Yipsilanti Pfft. Never such a thing as a "last chance". ;) -Rauth |

Although the sentiment is right, using a light ship to assist a kill on something bigger, the advice given for the fitting is very bad. Tech 1 ships generally dont have enough agility and speed to make a microwarp worth fitting. Likely flying this setup might get a corpmate in a battleship an easy kill but it wont do much for you. Its also woefully inefficient if used in groups. AGONY has made a science of PVPing in small ships and it is more complex than this. I would explain it now but it takes all the articles in our first class PVP-BASIC to do it justice and that is about 50k words of reading.
Take a class and your instructor will show you how to have fun without getting expensive.

TBH, I'm thinking of trying this. I realised I've tried the Alliance thing and always got bored of it/politics/everything else very quick. Been contemplating the worth of wardeccing small, fat-walleted hi-sec corps or harassing complacent 0.0 Alliance miners with ninja craft, feed back some of the angst of years gone by

High sec wars are generally boring. The defender has the advantage given the inability to use bubbles, the ability to dock everywhere and so on.

Ideas: Work up to lvl 4 missions where the ISK is sweeter. Get into mining, industry, or trading (if you are into that sort of thing). Join an empire corp and follow the drama and occaisional pvp. Join a 0.0 corp and follow the drama and regular pvp.
For the most part EVE is a sandbox, the players make the content. Frankly the missions get repetive and boring after a while. Ratting in 0.0 is even more boring, however you know you are doing it to pay for the ships you need for PvP, and the occaisional podding and loss of implants makes for exciting pvp encounters.
