Heya there. Me and two friends started playing about a month and a half ago. We're still very much green, at about 1.2 to 1.3M sp. We're interested in forming a small gang to hunt down pirates (common thing for noobs, I'm sure). So far we've been building up so we can actually afford to attack pirates, who are usually pretty old players and/or who know how to pvp.
What I'd like to ask is, what would a 2 and a 3 man gang need to be effective as pirate hunters? We obviously need some amount of firepower and EWAR capacity, just mostly wondering to what extent.

Also what you'd really need is 1 or 2 DPS ships cruisers or higher maybe with ECM drones and either a tackler or some kind of support.

Get someone in an ECM ship, perhaps one of the new ECM frigates (Kitsune?) - it will be extremely helpful if you can jam battleships. You could potentially bait battleships with 1-2 cruisers with decent tanks (plated raxes?) + ECM drones, warp in the Kitsune at range and hope to get a jam or 2 in and the DPS from sentries + thoraxes will melt the pirate quite fast.
Go scouting in nearby areas for potential pirate camps that are only 1-2 ship strong and prepare plans to trap them. -- A-War, much love. <3 |

u need to use your head. if u catch a -10 at a gate, get him to shoot first, an the sentrys will be on your side. good luck catching one out though as they will probably smell you coming from 5 jumps away. they also know every trick in the book.
best thing for you to so, is just fit cheap T1 and go and look for a fight. only way you can learn is doing. If u fail... so what, you lost a bit of t1. and i bet u had a bloody good laugh. If you dont smack, they might even throw u a couple of pointers. We are a friendly bunch really.
just get out there can of beer in your hand and go for broke

come back again try more more more if you die you learn the more you do it the more you will love it you might lose ten ships before you get a kill but it will be worth it hehe

3 Man gang suggestion: Ok, you take in a heavily plated cruiser, and a tackler (probably an interceptor), the interceptor tackles the most expensive looking ship, as soon as he has a point you lite the cyno and jump in a Nyx and set the fighters on the battleship...
seriously though, at that SP level, your only gonna be cheap kills for a gate camp, you may get a kill or two going after solo campers, but if there is more than one or two your gonna be toast, especially if they are orginized and remote repping/have thier own ECM ç¦ |

Here's the thing, you can bait lowsec pirates in t1's but its an ugly messy dangerous thing.
The Bait ship can be a Maller or Vexor with a heavy tank and a point. DPS is secondary. A lowsec pirate will engage you first in his HAC or BS but sadly will usually have a 2nd or 3rd pilot backing him up, oh well, you lose t1's and if you get a kill your doing tons of damage and get some t2 loot.
Your going to want a Blackbird (ewar 4tw) and a dps ship for backup. Look at a Blaster-Thorax or a Rupture. Basically once the bait ship locks a point, the other two warp to him, ewar at 50+km and the dps ship at optimal and now its a race against his backup if he has any.
That's going to be about as good as it gets. Thankfully you can use pirate bravado against them and often check their public kb's (once you know your targets, from checking out the lowsec pockets near you) and get an idea of what race(s) they fly and pack racials versus the pirate you see in-system.
Not a great plan, but its a start. Don't expect to win often at first, like another poster said, they know all the tricks and tactics you know none.

I am not sure if it has been said yet, but maybe start doing some PvP first. Get a stack of frigs, and learn beofer you start getting into ships that cost a bit more and require some experience on the field to be effective. Get on the test server and get a taste.

You may have better luck fighting highsec pirates, who are usually also newbies and who usually work alone. Their methods primarily involve ore theft and can-flipping. Get a miner in your corp to go mining, and have your fighters hang out at the nearest planet to the belt. Sooner or later somebody should come along to flip the ore. At no risk to the miner, you've just gotten free permission for anyone in your corp to shoot the pirate for a 15-minute window. If you find the wait is too long, try a busier system and juicier bait.

IMHO I'd go for plated Thorax or Rupture, Blackbird or Celstis EWAR and a Slasher or Atron as a tackler (Or any innately fast frigate). Fitting is another matter completely...
If you have more members join your gang add DPS first then EWAR second then tackler last. Blackbird is best choice IMHO for EWAR. Lavraen |

Do you guys even READ the OP?
I don't exactly think tech 2 ships are in the horizon for these guys.
Get yourself a fun 2-3 man cruiser gang. Get 2 tackle/dps cruisers (Thorax, Moa, Vexor, Rupture, Stabber, Caracal, etc), and get yourself 1 EWAR cruiser (preferably a Blackbird - although an arbitrator is nice too). __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Attacking gate campers isn't anti-piracy. That's gate busting. Anti-piracy is baiting and catching the guys going on the actual real hunts.
Gate campers like to think they're real pirates, but cmon. If you don't know how to actually use a scanner, I'm not taking you seriously.

Gotta love it when it goes from a cruiser baiting in a couple of cruisers straight up to about 20 BS duking it out :P
Its like a freaking mission sometimes if both parties have backup plans : /

Two things you need:
1) A lot of luck at picking a good fight. You can probably take a solo pirate, maybe two at once if you're lucky and plan it right. But here's the problem: solo pirates are rare. More often, that "solo" pirate has friends in the next system, and you're going to die horribly.
2) ECM. If you just try and slug it out with a pirate, you're just going to die. The pirate has far better skills, and is usually flying a much better ship. A solo pirate HAC/BC/BB/recon could probably take down your entire 3-man gang if you try to make it a straight-up fight. So don't fight fair, bring in ECM and jam the target so he can't fight back. A Blackbird is a wonderful ship to have here, it's cheap, low-skill, and very effective as long as you don't engage too many targets at once (see #1 above).
As for tactics, your best bet is probably baiting. Pirates will almost always be waiting at safespots between targets, so unless you have a covert ops frigate you won't be able to get them until they engage a target. Gatecampers are almost always prepared for a fight (either to kill you, or to run away), so look for belt pirates instead. You can either use one of your own ships as bait and pretend to rat, or if you want to give up your ethics you can use someone else as bait. Find a guy who looks like a nice pirate target, wait for the pirates to jump him, and then gank the ganker. Of course at that point, you might as well just kill the target yourself...

as others may have said get them to shoot you at a gate or station in low sec, once they done that warp scram them and have the other person(s) warp in or undock with webber and ecm drone's to jam them then blast them as much as you can, you may need a remote repper on both ship's to help each other to tank his dps, oh yea watch local for any help coming his way, if he gets help warp off to a ss and jump between ss's so probeing you won't help them then dock or jump gate's to hi sec and go over what happen to get better next time.
if you dont mind losing sec standings try to get them in a belt and scram/web/jam them first |

Hi there and welcome to EVE.
Anti-pirates huh? Well, let me tell you it will be a hard life with little reward and zero recognition. Unlike pirates who can (and do) shoot anyone; you need to be very selective and I assume only go after those with a security rating of -5 or lower. However, not all 'pirates' have negative security ratings and you might find yourself being attacked by pilots with postive security ratings. Keep that in mind. Be paranoid and consider EVERYONE as a potential enemy.
However, let's focus on an effective 3-ship gang. What do you need? With you SP levels: I would recommend you just get into some cheap T1 frigates, go to nearest low-sec entry point and learn the basics of PvP. Am sure there will be many a pilot willing to oblige.
Once you have some experience of PvP - what ship types would make a good anti-pirate gang?
For x3 T1 cruisers I would go for:
1. Blackbird with jammers (of course) 2. Thorax with 1600mm RT plate (+ drones) 3. Thorax with med neutrons (+ drones)
For tactics you will need to be smart and work on the bait technique. Have thorax (number 1) in a belt ratting, when a pirate engages - get a point on the pirate and get the other rax and blackbird in asap. Jam the pirate with the BB, point and web him, then pwn him with the thorax and the drones.
However, best weapon is your BRAIN. Scout out and do some investigative work on which pirates frequent what areas, their ship(s) of choice etc. Blindly warping into a fight is not the way to win.
Come to Eifer and say hi.
Good hunting.

having spent most my eve career in anti pirate corps (except for the start where i was in a pure non pvp empire mission running corp) I can say the anti-pirates life is harder.
You limit yourself on purpose for which targets you can jump.
Course you have the -5.0 or worse guys..plus anyone you can confirm as a pirate. (If they jump your bait ship in a belt..guess what.they are a pirate...who cares about the sec rating).
The best part of it though..unlike hunting npcers or miners..your looking for someone who actually is setup to fight. Its alot more satisfying when you get that kill.
There are anti-pirate corps and alliances out there..from NRDS in 0.0 (Not red dont shoot) to active anti-pirate corps in low sec.
I recommend looking into a few of em if you want more friends to hunt pirates if only in the mentor role for advice.
I always found the concept of fighting people who arent well prepared to fight....beneath me.
Anyone can gank a shuttle or silly mining ship...the real fun is in ganking the ganker.:)
(And alot more risk. ive lost as many ships as ive killed).
