Hey,
I wondered if anyone else uses inactive training (I call it dark training) to save money/isk.
As an example during the next year my skill plan has me training a total of 60 skills (20 unique skills). I train for a 30D period using a GTC, then let my sub lapse during skills that will last for long periods of time. I generally reactiveate about 12H prior to skill ending. I've used this for things like BS 5, CS 5, etc.
Since I run a couple of accounts I can get away with this, cuz I can still get my EvE fix during a characters dark training period. One of my accounts will train 18 skills (7 unique) over the next year... gotta love those rank 12+ skills.
I sometimes get an itch and want to reactivate early to change focus of training... but I try to resist. I have a long lapse coming soon... Marauders 5 -> 43D of dark training.
I thought that at one time CCP was going to disallow this, but since they haven't I'm still using it.
Is anyone else crazy enough to plan training that includes dark training? How do you handle the urge to change those skills in the middle of your dark training period?

Edited by: Ki Anna on 18/04/2008 19:55:40 I do it all the time.
Its the only way to train BS 5.
I also have Marauders V to be set at the end of this month, just before my alt wakes up after finishing Marauders V.
PS - as for resisting the urge to change skills/reactive early: the main characters can each keep me entertained. There is just the right amount of overlap, that I am not tempted to reactive, and enough variation to keep things interesting. For example, this character is training to fly a Paladin/Kronos, while the other is going for a Gollem. In the future, this character will likely train for Dreadnaughts, while the other will train for Carriers. |

I've done it twice. Once this summer, I canclled my subscription for a month to train Caldari Cruier from 4 to 5. Then again this January I canceled my subscription for one month go train Battlecruisers from 4 to 5, and I'm going to take one month's break in May too, to train AWU from 4 to 5.
Since I'm using 90 day time codes now, I can't just break when I want to, I have to time it, but I except that I'll take one more break either 3 or 6 months after the one in May, to train Caldari Battleship from 4 to 5.
After that, I believe I'm set. With Caldari Frigate, Cruiser and Battleship at 5, and Battlecruiser and Advanced Weapons Upgrades at 5, I'm pretty much where I want to be, as far as long tech 1 skillz to level 5 is concerned.
(I also sometimes regret not having done AWU to 5 instead of BC to 5, in January, but I have gotten quite some benefit out of my Drake, so it's not like I'm even close to cheweing my arm off in frustration.)

I have two accounts on the go at the moment, one stops for a while to train a long skill and then I play the other for a bit.
Also, I have another one which is about one week away from Mining Barge 5, although I'm not sure if I'll bother reactivating her as I screwed up her attributes because I didn't know what I was doing. (That, and I've decided that mining is boring and I can't be bothered with it...)

Ideas like this puzzle me. Do you have so many accounts that letting one go inactive is not a problem, or do you just not like playing the game all that much? Why would you not keep playing the game? You need ISK, assets, experience and contacts at least as much as you need SP, or so I would think.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

I do this. I prefer using 90d GTCs though just for the better ISK value... unless you have several 40-50 day skills in your plan and not much in the way of filler skills it still ends up being the better value.
Fighting the urge to reactivate is easy, just look at public killboards to see how lame people are who play this game. |

Edited by: Lance Bolvic on 19/04/2008 19:18:32 I find it rather funny that the same folks who use inactive training are paying either the same amount as I am, or more than I do monthly. On the other hand, if you had it timed properly, I suppose this would be far better than a skill queue system. You pay for 1 character to be trained while you get 2 trained. (Seems to me an incentive for CCP to change stance and tie training to account active or not based for a skill queue, but perhaps they make more money from "dark training" than they would from spending resources on a queue system that requires a code rewrite...)
Actually the more I think about this it would support having 2 characters that are well skilled, could end up making just as much as the other especially in a 2 man corp where all the money is shared via corp wallet. lol

^ What he said ^
I have 2 characters, one 18ish months old and one 9 months old, and both have been active since the day I made them. I play both simultaneously, as main and support roles. I once made a 3rd character, and considered "dark" training... but what's the point?
EDIT: Posted on corp-holding alt.

I liked training bs to 5 while flying around with my bs 4
also why inactivate when you can continue playing, especially if you have 1 account active and both have maruaders 4+ lol, dual account mission run or something and make that silly 4mil a day or w/e it is to buy a 90d GTC.
Did let my alt account go inactive for about a day or two, as my card expired and I forgot to update the info, and then said meh, why not buy a gtc

To answer those that asked...
I have a total of 12 accounts. I am not a CCP staffer, so I don't get any free accounts.
Even when I do dark train I've got 2-3 R&D/Invention accounts running, a Carrier account, a Dread account, this account, a few maxed out miners (thanks to Dr whatshisname for making trit value rise), a corp holder, and a couple of others abusing market hubs.
Even if I had half of my accounts in Dark Training I'd still have more than I can realistically play by myself at the same time.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one using this.
Oh, and I'm not addicted to EvE I swear! |

Oh and one more thing...
To those saying that Dark Training is an expensive method of playing.
I end up paying 65M every 30 days for an account. Since I pay about 130M isk, currently, for a GTC and it covers at least 60 days (30 active/30 inactive) my cost is only about 2M/Day.

More fun that using this method is to plug in two +4s, set a long skill and then go PvP for a month without changing the skill. If you get podded, you keep training at a high level without losing the benefit of the implants. ------------

I am planning on doing some "Dark Training" soon (congrats on coining a term). For me playing Eve is always a juggle with RL work and family commitments. So the fact that I can set a skill to train and then shut off Eve for a while is greatly appreciated by my wife. So now I am going to plan it in. 3 months on with a GTC and then a month or so off training a level V.
This will actually make my wife see Eve as a really good option for me to play, rather than what she thinks at the moment which is planning a trip to Iceland to murder all of the staff od CCP.

Don't see the point. When I am training a long skill, I keep playing, earning my ISK, going about my business. I suppose if you run multiple alts this could be useful.

^ That. However, as the sying goes, a change is as good as a rest - I have two accounts on the go, with the main characters focussed on completely different things. It makes a nice change of pace to take a complete break from a character once in a while while they go "back to school" for a week or two. |

Thanks. I liked the term and I wanted to share the term with others.
I do find that I am using Dark Training a lot over the next 3-6 months. Summer vacation in Hawaii will be a nice break.

This still works?
Heh. I guess now we know why we don't have a queuing system...
Hrm. Though I am guessing this only works for GTC people? When I quit EvE a while back I had a long skill training going on and it was NOT done when I came back a year latter.

I just turned my high sec alt into a "darktraining" guy. In all truth I found other ways in low sec to make more money on my pvp main then a mission runner. Awesome thing is by the time I get laid-off next winter I'll have a Black Ops cyno ***** to shuttle around my recon friends. Also he'll be a in a poor dread shortly after that.

I think I've done a month or two of dark training total since this character started. When I got bored the first time I waited until my subscription ran out and started on some long skill. When I came back later I was surprised to find, remember, how many skills I had at 5 and went back to playing. Once in a while I will let my account run out if I am training a long **** off skill AND real life is about to *****my time.

Hey heres a question do you stop getting RPs if your account is cancled? If so it would kinda be stupid to stop paying since a 90 day gtc only cost 3.88m per day if you were making more in RPs than that per day o_O?
