Even though BACON (the new real-time intel-gathering 3rd party app from a Hydra Alliance corp) is not a violation of the EULA, it breaks the spirit of the game.
There are reasons that safeties have been put in place to prevent this sort of thing. The fact these guys have found a workaround to a system set in place to prevent people from doing this sort of thing frustrates me. Not because I didn't do it, but because it is available to players.
First let me say this: I have local open 23/7. Everyone has access to it and I choose to leave it open. That is personal choice. If I downloaded this program and (this is a stretch here) I was mining in a lowsec belt with eve minimized (lol), I could be alerted to gtfo without even paying attention.
But the root of the issue still stands. It takes away from the fact that EVE is a game where you need to focus and be attentive to play. If we allow this sort of thing to come into regular play what will be next? Some sort of combat tool to calculate the enemies' dps and say "you are going to explode in X number of seconds at this rate" or some other hogwash?
CCP this needs to be stopped right now before more plans move further to develop more around this client/user loophole. Even though the data is accessed locally and does not involve the client, it reports realtime information that the client is delivering to you anyway. That's where the spirit of the game is broken and needs to be fixed.
I really don't have any respect for the people that made this whatsoever. Why? Because first of all they say on their website they're proud members of the Hydra Alliance, yet they all post without their alliance tag. Sounds proud. That shows me they're hiding rather than being a part (this is all skepticism). Finally, they have really touted themselves as being the saviors of not-paying-attention gameplay:
Originally by: Cesar Malari BACON's performance is, quite simply, real time. You can rely on BACON to let you know when someone enters the system you are in. If you happen to be in a different conversation window than Local, you still are alerted to system entries. If you happen to be quickly checking a forum, or momentarily distracted from EVE û BACON will save your ship.
AKA "I don't have to actually be paying attention to EVE, my ship will be safe!"
CCP, you yourselves have said hundreds of times that you want EVE to be an "at-keyboard experience." By allowing this sort of software (not this software per se, but this SORT of software) you are reneging your statements to your clients and consumers who put faith in you to keep this stuff out of the game.
Come on CCP. Keep yourselves in check.
Thanks.

Cheerfully reported as trolling. :D
You haven't had a single useful thing to say in any bacon-related thread, so you are the spammer/troll.

No, at some point you all forgot/never realized you signed up for a 'PvP first' game. Evidently CCP did as well at some point, which is the most disheartening part of all. _____________________________________________________________________________

This is true.
In my experience of looking at other MMOs and getting input on them, EVE exists as only one of two games I have ever seen the exalt PVP and not sneer at it. The other is a game called RF Online, where you actually HAVE to PVP to move forward.
Every other game I have ever seen penalizes you for PVP, whether by reducing your ability to do normal ingame things or stat penalties and what not.
This is disheartening and I hope CCP realizes what is going on.

They didn't forget. They just realized that a 'PvP first' game cannot grow.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

Originally by: Shakuul Sorry was there something I missed about this? Does it log off for you? I thought it just sounded a tone when someone hostile enters local. This requires more attention than autopilot...since you're 100% safe with autopilot if you are travelling hisec, not in any empire wars, and not worth suicide ganking.
This is really just another way for those of us who cant run at 1920x1080 res (and have enough room in EVE for a huge local window) to "see" local.
It's called turning up the volume.
Hell, if I walk away from my computer to go to the kitchen to cook dinner, I can still hear what my corpmates are talking about in vent.
Don't be so naiive.
AT ANY RATE
CCP has removed the original thread regarding it so this is over now. Thanks again CCP :)

No, but your reaction, and the reaction of pretty well everyone else to bacon, has been that PvP is the only way to play and gain enjoyment from Eve Online.
The fact is, a signficant proportion of Eve Online's playerbase does not want to engage in pvp activites because they find pve to be enjoyable enough and it doesn't result in as much grief.

No, its a way to have local watched for you. _____________________________________________________________________________

I wouldn't set the fireworks off just yet - the other thread was probably deleted because of the abusive language some posters were using - not because of the topic of discussion.

Congratulations, you can make out of context quotes. Lets look at what I actually said: "100% safe with autopilot if you are travelling hisec, not in any empire wars, and not worth suicide ganking."
Is that an unfair statement? If so please explain how.

No, its a way to have local watched for you.
You still have to be at your computer and it doesn't act for you (execute ingame commands) at all.

I'm not actually opposed to removing people in system from local - it as an equal effect on hunters aswell as their prey and will make the directional scanner a fair bit more useful in pvp situations.

In that case CCP would not remove an entire thread from existence simply for a few posts. Rather, Mitnal would come and pwn their post with "Moderated - inappropriate content" or somesuch.
