Edited by: Palden Lhamo on 25/04/2008 15:05:46 Hello there,
I'm about to buy a new laptop for my work. But you know, eve is a must have, so can anyone give me a report how open source drivers work?
On www.free3d.org I read that the radeon driver is the "best" one atm. Whats about Intel graphic cards, are there any useful? (nvidia with open source is a no-go)
So what tells your experience, ati (radeon) or intel - and which specific card?
Thanks for help :-)
P.S.: proprietaire drivers are no choice, please don't talk about.. P.P.S.: I don't need premium graphics, would be nice but that isn't a must-have.

Nvidia has the best driver support in Linux right now. Read up on EnvyNg too. Any newer 8 or 9 series card would serve you well. Pick one in your budget. They should all play eve with no problems. |

Dont go with ATI on linux. It's sad really. I just recently switched to linux so I didn't know better but I'm never buying ATI again unless ATI pulls up their socks and get to work immediately.
That having been said. For $100 - $150 you can get Geforce 8600-8800 Also see some Geforce 9600 for $200.
That's the best price - performance.
You should get shader models 4.0 support and that'll be a good card for quite a few years. |

All of the OSS graphics drivers suck when it comes to anything 3D, unfortunately. You have to go with the proprietary ones, and NVIDIA is the only one that has put any serious development behind it.

That said, ATI has really gotten on the stick with their driver effort 'lately'.. last year or so? The linux driver does currently suck, but... the coming months may see a change in that status. It's a gamble. I admit, the last time I chose a graphics card, I went with an nvidia (8800gts/320) rather than wait on the then-still-coming radeon 3870, due to the status of the linux drivers, as I was planning to swap my rigs over for some linux flavored gaming, and the ati drivers are/were 'notorious'.
I have my fingers crossed for all the ati users though. More gaming on linux can only be good :)
