Hi there!
I use this system:
# Processor: AMD Phenom 8400(2.1GHz) # Processor Main Features: 64 bit Triple Core Processor # Cache Per Processor: 3 x 512KB L2 Cache # Memory: 3GB DDR2 667 # Hard Drive: 320GB SATA II (7200RPM, 8MB Cache) # Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT 512 MB Video Memory # Model #: GT5670 # Item #: N82E16883113059
I lag like no tomorrow, Every time I click on a new tab, or a new window, or attack someone, or do ANYTHING, I get a massive lag spike. Sometimes I don't have to do anything! I am not running Premium, even though I know I should be able to with ease, and this is a new system with very little on it, I don't have any programs that should be bogging the system down...
I just purchased 6 months of time for this game, I didn't waste it on a lag filled game did I? It seemed to work fine before...

What's your internet connection like? Try doing some testing against servers in the UK (that's where the Eve server farm is). ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University. |

How would I go about testing UK servers? ^_^

There are web sites out there that allow you to test your internet connection.
Try Speedtest
as an example.
Try a google search on for others. Look for one based locally and try to find one in the UK.
This will give you an idea of your connection speeds. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University. |

One thing i think you should clear up here right now is whetehr you are talking about framerate "lag" (whis isn't really lag, but an FPS Problem), or network latency (the classic explanation of lag. Keep in mind some EVE players are really old school).
If it's framing, then most likely there is something going wrong when data gets transfered from the graphical files or the cache to your memory or from memory to the GPU memory. I'd run some diagnostics on your PC then focussing on bus transfers. I'd also make sure all your drivers are up to snuff and you are using an up to date version of DirectX 9 (EVE has not been optimized for 10 AFAIK).
If it's latency, then none of the specs you have given here will help you. Latency is a function of the performance of your ISP, the backbone it hangs under and ultimately the game server itself. Your PC's hardware will only affect it when it's performance has dropped so low it can no longer reliably monitor incoming traffic.
FPS performance shows itself mostly by the game freezing entirely, not responding to you in any way (you won't even be able to change the focus of various windows). When it resumes, the game state will jump ahead as if you were effectively blacked out during your freeze (which in effect you were). Latency shoes itself in the client responding to input, but your actions on the game world havign no effect. Rats move in strange trajectories and don't fire on you at all, you can not fire on anything or target anything, and an attempt to warp is acknowledged, but never takes place. Eventually the action is either resumed in some rubberbanding sort of fashion as all backward traffic catches up to the client, or a disconnect message is given.

^ That is a really good explanation! And the word "framing" is a good one. Thanks, I'll adopt that ;)

First off its not always Eve's fault that there is lag. Few weeks ago Europe had a lot of servers down and all connections from the states to CCP where bad but if you live in the eastern Europe or east or north of it your connection was good do to route.
You can Tracert in commandpromp to see your connection I don't know IP address off hand so you will have to look for it.
You can look at Internet traffic report for more info as well.

Edited by: Bleeshtar on 28/04/2008 16:47:22 An issue I have been having is what I call 'pauses'.
I should point out my FPS is good to excellent average of 35fps in nearly any situation.
Every minute or so the game hangs while the hard drive thrashes for a second or two. It doesent seem to matter where I am or what Im doing. It is espically annoying in combat.
I read a thread on how to improve FPS wherein it refers to a prefs.ini file and setting a chache size in there but I was unable to find that file.
Ive been through it all, cleaned up crap and cache files, defragged, tested for and cleaned up spyware / viruses, tried disabling my virus protection 'auto protect', tried setting processor affinity, turned off chat logging.
The pauses are still there and seem to get worse the longer I play.

Edited by: Pufnstuf on 28/04/2008 17:50:43 I had noticed that every minute or so the game would pause, then resume almost if it was a lag issue, BUT once I turned OFF the ROOKIE chat Channel, the stop and start pause motion would be gone, and I have had no lag or slow down issues.
Note: that when you log back on again, the ROOKIE Chat channel will be on again, so I just close it, each time and have no problems.
I also have a high end PC, fast web connection.

Is there any way to turn that channel off permantly.
I frankly found it to be more or less useless. Having to close it every time I log in is a petty nuisance.
Im sure all the folks there do a fine job and all but the scroll rate is ridiculous. I asked the same question 4 times and recieved no response.

Correct, it's 30 days (29 days too long IMO). ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University. |
