what's a real pirate? not you, apparently.
i mean really, how did you ever expect to make it as a pirate if you weren't prepared to conform?

Do you spontaneously give a hearty bellow of 'Yarr!!' when you see helpless prey in belts?
If so, then you should visit your local GP immediately.
They changed max sec status to 5.0 afaik, you can only be higher if you were higher prior to the change, whenever that was.
I agree that angry alts are the height of human knowledge on what it is to be a real pirate. They should be given awards.

You can get above 5.0 by killing officer/faction spawns
Yarr is no longer a pirate thing as it has reacher beer truck status (plastered in bio's every where (I'm looking at you drone region dwellers))

It's not a rule book. It's more like a set of guidelines.

Real pirate,
As you know, it`s not many "real" pirates in EVE, and it`s very hard to say who is and whos not.
In the old days 2003/early 2004 it was more easy to point out the pirates. Today it`s like this: evryone that is in 0.0 space can fitt the title pirate. And you have "one million" people in low sec with sec -10. Pirates? Gankers? noobs? Who knows.
Here is 3 things that you must be able to do and like, at least, if you want to call your self or others pirate, in My opinion.
Can kill anyone for isk or items.
Can support the ships he/she uses and items he/she uses from the kills (from loot and so on).
Killing people for the fun of it.
You will probobly hear several 100 opinions about this.
Fly safe m8.
Hail MAFIA!

awesome the piratebay is the first in a google search for pirate
anyways Piracy is a robbery committed at sea, or sometimes on the shore, without a commission from a sovereign nation (robbery with sovereign commission is privateering, and distinct from piracy).
lowsec piracy and suicide ganks
can flipping doesn't count as its not an attack on a ship/crew
and wars are privateering

I don't know what a real pirate is but I do know what a real PvPer is. For that you have to live in 0.0 and die looking at a black screen waiting to load. THAT'S uber.

My definition of a real pirate and a fake pirate.
First the Fake.
1) Anyone that deliberately makes their sec status -10, because they think it looks cool. It does not, and it warns anyone in your local exactly what you plan on doing.
2) Anyone that has to substitute their pirating career with any other activity to keep them selves in the black.
3) Anyone that sets up gate camps in the open for everyone to see. Anyone with 1/2 a brain will see it coming.
Now for the definition of a pirate.
1) Someone that kills/ransoms to get paid. He does it smart, so that in the end his loot turns profit for him.
2) Look at #1 again.

I agree, except that the people with less than half a brain cell not only are incapable of avoiding their own peril, they also do things that make no sense like bring cap ship BPOs to lowsec in frigates. The truth is that the people who are smart enough to avoid an obvious camp probably aren't going to make such lucrative blunders anyway.

"Real pirate"
It is someone who does not compromise, kills indiscriminately everyone and everything that isn't possible to ransom in low-sec only, gaining a -10 security status, and is completely self-sufficient doing so (eg. doesn't need other forms of income). Also mostly does it solo, or in very small groups, or has a corp where all loot goes to one single guy with an immense ego (that screws over his minions). Also to be a "real pirate" you need to complain about 0.0, about blobs being the only way to actually kill you because you're the second coming of ... err, satan (and you hate carebears). You never use smileys and you are sarcastic on forums and in convos (except maybe for maybe one or two who pretends to be charming, but really is full of it).
Also, low-sec gate-camping is one of the form of "real piracy" that most guys with these attributes do. In later EVE-days capitals are used.
---
Personally, I think this "pirate" thing is a bunch of hokum. The way I see it is that what separates a pirate from a "regular pvp:er" is the lack of care for out-of-game rules such as most irl-morality. A pirate pvp:s to make isk compared to making isk to pvp. And it's irrelevant if he's +5.0 standings with concord. "Privateers" are pirates in my book, as is MAFIA and whoever does the lofty-thing.
In my view, a pirate in EVE is someone who chooses a criminal way of EVE-life, as opposed to protecting space, belts, mining, doing missions, having goals of conquering vast areas of 0.0, etc. - just roams the space in search for a way to make ISK without having to interact with an NPC or a virtual piece of rock.

Pirates are a pretty loose term in this game.. The definitions we hear here are most likely a bio of the one who posts them since it's "cool" to be a pirate. Other than that I guess it's pretty subjective, so if people think you're a pirate then you are, even though you think of yourself as a revolutionary or whatever :P Also when people call you a noob pirate, that's a pretty good indication that you're on the right track since you've obviously did something grim to the guy somehow ^^

Real Pirates:
1. 'tis isn't a boat, 'tis is a ship! Pirates use ships. Ships are defined as sea vessels that can carry another sea vessel, f.eks. a tub or a small boat.
2. Ohoi me maties! Pirates are well known for their distinctive way to talk, making them easily recognisable.
"I like to take women out for Brunch and Wine."
"OHOI! Thar be a salty wench to our portside! All hands on deck! Prepare for boarding of the ****deck! Plunder her ports!"
The top one is not a pirate, the bottom one is. Some say pirates talk the way they talk, beause of brain damage caused by alcohol or staying too much in the sun. Personally I am more leaning towards a genetical mutation.
3. "Thar be plunder to be had!" Pirates loves plunder, and their main occupation (and hobby) is to gather as much as possible. When they get enough plunder to retire, they bury it somewhere and forget about it, so someone can write a boring book about it.
4. Ninjas Ninjas are the pirates worst enemy. Why, no one knows, and the question becomes more perplexing considering the geographical distance between the Carribean and Japan.
